Hello Andy .... Always enjoy your videos and information about our Tesla M3. Pretty crazy what happen to you. Thanks you very much for sharing. Although is not a bad deal getting the new Tesla if I was in your shows I would definitely keep "Red Ranger" and keep enjoying it. :) Only 12k is a big loss. It would be nice to get the new one but financially is not a good decision. On the other hand .... is your money. Really Thanks for the video. Great information. Take care.
Hey Andy, I never comment on RU-vid videos but I’m going out of my way for this one. This fix absolutely worked for me! I had the exact same problems and I really needed FSD for driving and working overnights and you just really saved me here. Thank you sir!
There are holes in Tesla Service and your experience and eventual outcome isn't uncommon. The irony is that because Tesla's are so reliable, many of the service center's have rookie employees and they do a poor job with edge case complaints. As you discovered, the Tesla community is a good place to start when an odd problem like yours comes up. BTW, using service mode isn't a hack ... 🙂
Disappointing that Tesla missed this, and awesome that the tools were there and free, and you got it fixed so quickly once you decided to take things into your own hands.
Andy, THANK YOU!!! This totally worked for me - got the windshield replaced about 8 weeks ago and have been stuck on 99% for most of that time. Thanks again!!!
This is why I’m a HUGE proponent for taking cars to their own dealerships/service centers unless it’s something pretty normal like tires I highly doubt this would’ve been an issue had Tesla themselves replaced them windshield
if safelite charges more than a thousand. I would hate to think what Tesla would charge. I called them once to get a chip fixed, I can replace the windshield cheaper than they can fix a chip. I just paid $183 for a new windshield. Junk yard was selling them for $25 on fathers day, but I didn't have the knife/scraper to remove one. I have another reason to not buy a tesla now.
@@robertsmith2956 Keep in mind that Tesla has a special glass and is generally larger than traditional vehicles. Most manufacturers would likely charge similar for a replacement service
@@robertsmith2956 what I mean is always go first party. I don’t personally care about the price so long as it gets done by the company who makes it. They know better than anyone how it works and how to fix it. It’s also a windshield, in what universe is that less than $200??? Even a normal cars would be at least $800 or so if not easily $1K or more Tesla or otherwise
@@michaelguzman2699 That hasn't been my experience. I had a defroster try and kill me. Kept over riding the AC and turning it off so the window would fog up. went to the dealer to get the computer reprogrammed so it left the AC on, they couldn't do it.
Keep your car! That’s what I would do. There’s nothing wrong with it & it’s a bit of a collector’s item, too, if you ask me. Plus, you can use it to generate income when the Robotaxi network is running. Think of it like a house. Don’t sell it. Just rent it out. Put it on Turo, worst case. But don’t sell it. No need to get a new car unless you like spending money.
With the FSD transfer, I would pull the trigger on a Highland. I went from a 2020 Model 3 long range to a 2034 Model Y long range. The tax credit and FSD transfer earlier this year really sweetened the deal.
I had a Tesla mobile tech tell me that other glass companies such as Safelite don’t do everything that needs to be done when replacing a windshield. I’ve had three windshields replaced, all by Tesla, and NEVER had a problem with my FSD.
Take on 10s of thousands of dollars of debt for a new car because Elon threatening last time you can transfer? This is something paid for but won't stay with a car if sold? Where is the class action to require this basic protection
@@pbm___000 I seriously doubt Andy will need to take on "10s of thousands of dollars of debt" to buy a new Tesla. This is the guy with enough credits to get two free Roadsters. And he likely makes plenty of money from his channel. It would probably be a cash purchase taken from his Mad Money stash. This isn't a complaint by the way. I like Andy's videos. We live near each other even though I've never met him. I wish him every success. I also wish I'd thought of it first.
Did the Tesla Service Center try unhooking the 12v battery AND the HV Battery (the connection under the rear seat)? I had to do that to mine when I replaced my 12v battery after replacing it. I made a service appt because I couldn't figure out why the 12v battery warning wouldn't go away, but the appt was 2 weeks out, so on a whim I decided to pull the rear seat bottom and disconnect the HV connection and the 12v. Hooked it back up and it's worked fine ever since (6+ months ago).
Congrats ANDY on the fix. Seems like a mobile tech visit initially would have resolved it easily. My experience was that the mobile techs learn the inside tricks because they have direct customer interactions. But this solution should be in the Owners Manual too.

next time by a complaint with the DMV, normally it’s under the bureau of repair that you do the complaint
Had the same issue with windshield replaced by Tesla in 2019 my model s. The hardware for the FSD computer got stuck in a boot loader issue when upgrading software while not 100% calibrated after the windshield replacement. Cost me $1800 bucks to get fixed from Tesla, and that’s with a lot of pushback…
at 12k value , id keep driving it till the wheels fall off.. It literally cannot depreciate much more. Im having similar issues, i have no cruise control , no autopilot etc..Im doing software updates and hope it all comes back after that
Question for anyone who owns a Tesla…. So I’m giving up my v8 Camaro to get an EV because I comments a total of 100 miles a day and paying $800 a month for gas is extremely stupid. My question is what are the differences between the 3 and the Y. Those are the only 2 models that are aesthetically pleasing to me. I really want the Y and feel like I should get it based on that.
I just picked up my new Model Y yesterday and it's awesome, with tons of internal space and comfort, it feels great on the road, with a higher stance and better view of the road than the Model 3. IMHO I think the Model Y is a better value, and you may qualify for the current $7,500 EV tax credit, given to you at time of purchase.
The most useful Tesla related video on YT thus far ! Thank You ! 😍 BTW, you should sell this one for about $20k and buy the new one and transfer the FSD ;)
I’ve had several problems with the software in my 2018 model 3 with 83K miles. The precondition starts with out it being programmed and sometimes the walk away lock does not lock the doors but I get a notification the doors are not locked. I just out new Salum tires in it but I want to upgrade to a 2024 model Y. Do you know if I can transfer my enhanced autopilot to the new model Y ? Thanks
Good to know that technique. It's something to look out for in my Model Y and information I can pass on to others in my social media groups. I'd say upgrade on if that is where your heart is. But truth be told I would wait. I have a end of year 2022 with HW3 and Tesla is already talking about HW5 or better known as AI5 being the one FSD will most likely work even better with. I assume HW4 will be fine but I'd simply wait. If the current car is paid off then keep it since you won't get much for it and maybe add the new Model 3 later and transfer FSD if they still allow you to. Now you have two cars. Use one as our Uber or robotaxi and the ew one as your everyday driver.
Safelite replaced a windshield on my Kia Stinger and used an aftermarket (crap quality) gel pad between the windshield and sensors/camera, causing the auto wipers to malfunction. They had to remove and replace the gel pad (and the windshield had to come off) two additional times before they finally used the OEM one and resolved the problem. All so they could save a few dollars.
Thankyou for this information….. the delays you received are a gain for community knowledge. The solution is damning for Tesla support. Will they update their global service teams on this fix? RU-vid needs a high level Tesla service liaison channel to acknowledge these events and inform on internal Tesla remedies. Tesla service needs to be highly trusted… that is win win.
Get the new one and keep both until you can private sell the 2018. I did this and currently have both cars (both red AWD). I transferred FSD to the 2024 and have an FSD subscription for the 2018. The 2024 is amazing and totally worth it! PS switching back and forth between stalks and no stalks will screw with your brain for awhile 🤯🤣
You said it yourself. Expensive repairs/parts. Bad depreciation! Why’d you want to do it again if your car is in decent shape. Drive it to the ground, so maybe we’ll find out how good/bad battery degradation is on it!
Great job 👍 I would have complained to Tesla. You paid for nothing… Also $12.000 is insanely low. Doesnt make sense to trade it in at all. Perfectly good car.
As bad as this was the really bad thing is paying $15,000 FSD and not being able to use it on a different car when you buy a new car. It's just a software license so as long as you're not using it on 2 different cars at the same time there should be no limit on transferring it.
For fun I checked to see the trade-in value of my Mod 3. Started getting texts from Tesla folks out west (area code, Nevada). How does FSD transfer work? Something about the old car and new car have to be on your account at the same time. OK with trade-in but how with sale of old car to a private buyer? Still confused.

From initial $55k down to $12k, so in 6 years you've basically lost $40-42k on this car, that's like $7k lost per year or $580 monthly. That's a lot of depreciation!
Posted on X recently; Couple months ago, driving manually, the stop light "wake up" chime couldn't be heard. No one else complaining on line. Now what? (out of warranty, 2018 Mod 3) Set up a Service date. Had some back & forth chat. They set up a visit & $200 estimate. Screw it. Cancelled. (hour+ drive to service center. $200 to investigate? At least two people I had email exchanges wanted more data. "I can't hear it. Wife can't hear it. Numerous trials. Turned off Joe mode. It used to work" type chat) I can live without it. FIXED NEXT UPDATE!
Andy, In September 2023 I sold my 2018 M3 for the 2023 model year, exactly and only because I could transfer FSD ... at that time, only available if you took delivery by the end of the month, which I did. This was just before Highland was released, but I wanted to make the transfer before the "one and only transfer period" ran out. Now, it seems FSD transfer will be available periodically, and maybe even made permanent. Who can say with Tesla. I think I was a little hoodwinked on the one-month-only transfer offer but I have a nice 2023 Model 3 so I guess it's OK -- just not Highland, sadly. Tesla only offered 13,000 for my 2018 vehicle. I took it to a couple of local dealers and shopped it around. In the end I sold it to a dealer for almost twice what Tesla offered. You might consider that. And I think the tax incentive is at the point of sale now, rather than something you get at tax time, so that certainly helps with a purchase. I would get the new car now, while the FSD transfer is available, because it gives you that much newer vehicle and Tesla could end the transfer offer at any moment. Maybe this second time will really be the one-and-only time. You don't want to pay for it again. Naturally, I would do this only if your finances warrant it. I suspect they do.
Andy. Got my Model 3 right after you. Same dilemma. Keep an otherwise awesome car that does everything still? Or take advantage, when I don't need a new car, of the Tax credit and FSD transfer. I figure the Tax credit will remain from now on. Thanks Tesla. The FSD transfer ends, end of August. Latter is the issue. $8000 value. At least a one time lifelong FSD transfer would be special. I'd wait.
Hi Andy, Thank you for sharing. I just had to replace my windshield and my camera calibration is also stuck. I tried your recommendations to go into the service menu. Still no luck. I should have mentioned that I also have 2018 Model 3, and I have not updated to FSD, just have EAP options. Do you mind share how long did it take to calibrate your camera finally? Thank you,
Keep your 2018. Frankly, information about the longevity of Tesla's is one of the biggest questions I have about the car. I'm thinking seriously about getting a used model 3, but my biggest nagging question is how long after I make the last payment will the car run. Elon loved to talk about a million miles per battery, but I don't know if that's reliable or not. Elon loves to talk a big game, and his track record is less than 100%. Do the community a favor and show us the longevity of your 2018.
On the bad side tesla should be able to fix this(No excuse) but on the upside tesla gives you the tools to troubleshoot yourself and be able to fix it which is awesome.
I think you trade it in with a trade. New Upgraded version of a 2024 (6 years newer), Taking advantage of Tax Rebate your cost for new is almost 22K and you still have your FSD on newer hardware. Fall in love with it all over again and continue making new Vids on your channel. Best Wishes Andy whatever you decide.
How much has it driven? they seem to be listed for 20+- how much you have driven. If you can sell it for anywhere close to 20 and you can afford the 20 on top, it might be well worth the niceness and peace of mind not soon facing the 8 year warranty runout where repairs might be russian roulette :)
I was excited about the sentry mode app, until I saw it was a subscription plan. Companies needs to stop doing that subscription model, and back to the good old days when you just pay once for something and then it's yours. 😵💫
What u proved is u know more about fixing ur Tesla than Tesla employees know.. and two u can always just get the new model 3 and transfer the fsd ..and also keep this model 3 or sell it privately .. id personally keep it as a piece of history as it's the first batch of mass produced M3 and also it's got the original Panasonic NCA 2170 cells..
crazy that tesla couldnt fix this when it literally just required a few taps on a screen. As for the new car ...nope.Ride out on the ride ranger for a bit more
Keep your current car. If everything works why replace it? I can't imagine selling my 2021 M3LR. In the end the decision is up to you but would you want to part with that car you've had this long?
Andy! I’ve been watching your youtube videos for a long time! Love watching Tesla videos and I’ve been wanting to get one. So if you’re considering selling it, I would love to check it out and possibly buy it!

The money you would save by transferring your FSD to a new m3 seems like less than the money you would loose by trading in your car. But... how much revenue can videos of the new m3 bring you???
Andy bud, I would upgrade if your heart is set on it and if the timing saves you money to do so now. Now I realize that when you go to the dealership that they are supposed to be the experts on anything related to your car. That being said, I would call Tesla and ask to speak with the person in the service department that was unable to fix your car and tell him how to fix it so they could train the other service staff to be able to do the same repair. It might be that in all of their training and service requirement equipment and manuals they have on site to fix issues that this "bug" is a relatively new thing that they have not seen before. If that is the case, they need to know the procedure of how to go about correcting the calibration of the cameras so the self driving feature resumes correct functionality. Its like being a beta tester and working in new operating systems or releases of software to find what doesn't work to be able to tell the manufacturers so they can debug it for everyone with a software update. It is frustrating but still, its the kind thing to do that could help the next person in line beyond your video for those that did what you did, take your car to Tesla instead of looking for how to fix it yourself out of desperation and extreme frustration. 🙂
Tesla service center in Colorado charged me the same amount! Not safelite issue, Tesla issue. I'm thinking you honestly are not surprised, right, Andy?
Confucius Advice Top Pick of the day: " Man who sells a functioning car before car is used up is throwing away money that could be earning many happy money with TSLA." And I am impressed that you solved the problem the way you did. I will save your video and refer to it should I ever have a camera related problem or other problem such as what you experienced. Good Job!🙏
Keep your car! I want to know how well it ages. I think the EV market is mature enough for a great used market. But, if you love the FSD then I guess take the deal. But for me after trying FSD for two weeks, Tesla would have to pay me to use it.
Timely… I picked up my new model Y5 days ago and I am in the same boat as you are or rather word… Camera is stuck at 99%. I’m gonna try your trick next time I get in the car
I'd keep your current car and continue to drive it as long as you can. Looks like you take good care of your vehicle, so I don't see any reason to upgrade to a newer car unless you absolutely need one. Save whatever car payment you would be making in a separate account and by the time you do buy a new one you can just purchase it outright with cash.
First of all if insurance is covering the cost of the windshield, get an OEM windshield… They cost almost $2000 but what do you care? That probably would've solved all your problems right there. But the second thing is an awesome hack the Tesla service should know but you'd be amazed at how much they don't.
It was clear from just your opening statement that you're really just looking for an excuse to upgrade. I still stick with what I said the last time you asked for an opinion on this: stay with what you have. Its so easy to chase the shiny new thing. I'm sticking with my 2019 Model 3 with FSD for as long as I can. By the time I NEED to replace it, Tesla will have an even better car out and likely at a better price.
Tesla nickel and diming for every little thing is why I stay away. They also like to blame issues on the owners that obviously were not caused by the owners.
I am now about to trade my 2020 model 3 for the new Highland. Reasons: 1. A much improved car 2. My 3-year warrantee expired, and it cost $435 to replace a $59 outside speaker. 4. FSD is transferrable. I too am disappointed that my car is only worth 21K in trade but, I am saving 8K on FSD. 4. after a test drive on the new model, 5. I WANT ONE!!! Mine has been a great car and service to this point has been excellent save the labor charge for the speaker replacement. BTW, I have only 27 thousand miles on this car with new tires. You would not regret owning the new model.
