I rented a Tesla Model Y from Hertz for my trip to ‎@ApteraMotors and the ‎@electricvehicleassociation meeting. It was easy, but there are some wrinkles you should know before you go. Hint: pack your J1772 adapter.
Please consider making a one-time donation to our channel of a coffee. We would be grateful! www.buymeacoffee.com/zeroemic...

Hertz is trying their best with all the videos and preparatory emails, but since Tesla is such a different animal, I could see it being a challenge for some. Just remembering to put the key card behind the cupholders was a "duh" moment for me. I suddenly recalled having to do that when we programmed the phones as a key during the pickup of our personal Model Y.

Who has time for that? Throw the case in tbe trunk, set up GPS, check exits, do a 360 surrounding check, ignite and drive! 2 minutes top.

I tried four times to get a Model Y from Hertz. Three times I showed up and they had no car for me. No compensation, no coupon, no nothing. Confirmed reservation every time. Once I drove three hours. You'd think I'd have wised up by then. Finally we bought one.
@0e-michigan

That stinks! I deliberately asked for and got confirmation on a Model Y for this trip. It's what we drive at home, so naturally it was an easy transition. Other than our name not appearing on the quick pickup board in San Diego. Maybe it's a matter of how the individual locations are managed?

We found Tesla supercharging stations in San Diego and Orange County were often full.

The new app integration works pretty good. I have been renting Mod3 from them for awhile now and only since the last time I did was there app integration avail. Thx for the vid. I enjoyed watching.

The last two times last year I rented a tesla from hertz in DFW they gave me the car with 8-20% charge, however I have never been charged for super charging so I guess that is a cool thing. Also you can't open the glove box so no idea where the registration and insurance card would be at

I must admit I'd be very tempted to hire a Tesla if that choice was available. I hear so much about them but have never driven one. It seems like an ideal opportunity for Tesla to introduce more people to their cars. It sounds like they should really have a fast charger at the hire place though and not charge silly rates to use it. Maybe the software could prepare the battery for a fast charge to 80% when it gets time to return the vehicle. I guess the LFP battery ones would be best if they're continually being recharged.

I just did a really similar thing with a Model Y on Turo. Seems close to your experience with charging/app/etc. It was pretty slick how the app handles switching between your personal Tesla and the rental. No software restrictions like Hertz had though. I suppose the price comparison would depend on time and place so it just comes down to if you want to interact with a big company or an individual. I split the difference and picked someone that had several cars and a high rating. Glad to see EV rental options either way.
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 4 месяца назад
Yes, agreed. I've done Turo as well and had mixed results. But perhaps it's just like AirBNB...sometimes you get a fantastic one and sometimes, meh. Hertz was a good solution for us in this case and fortunately it all worked out. I would also consider Turo again.

The best time to charge an EV is overnight or when parked for a long time. Hertz should have the policy for return empty as the standard. Return with same state of charge is just dumb.

It's burdensome to require you to return the car at the same starting SOC. You mentioned in the video you charged extra to allow for a buffer and ended up returning the car with more SOC than you started with. If later renters similarly buffer on returning the car, this will trend the SOC upward until eventually renters will need to charge to 100%. This takes extra time going to 100% and stresses the battery if everyone is now required to charge that much to ensure returning the car at the starting SOC. Perhaps the rental agencies need to rethink this policy.
@dssyenon
@dssyenon 4 месяца назад
Maybe a better policy is returning the car anywhere between the starting SOC and 80%. That's Tesla's recommended daily SOC.
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 4 месяца назад
I agree. I'm guessing at some point someone will just return it empty and pay the $25. If I had been in a hurry I might have done that. 80% of 75 kWh is about 56 kWh. Multiply by Supercharger rate of $0.40/kWh and you're above $20.

Wait you can use your phone as a key with a rental Tesla? Is this relatively new? Thanks for the great video. 🙏🏼
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 17 дней назад
Yes you can! I love that feature so you don't have to drag the key card around. The car will pop up a QR code on the screen when you put the key card near the cup holder. With that you can download the Tesla app and set up your use profile. Then you can open the car with the phone like Tesla owners typically do. I keep my key card in my wallet as a backup and normally use my phone.

Lol when I go on vacation or business, I want to just get in a car and go. And not worry about where the hell is a frigging charger.
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 4 месяца назад
I did just get in the car and go. I never worried about where the charger is because the map tells me. You didn't see the part where I was just driving all over the place without worrying because that's boring. By all means get a gas rental car and pay $4.75 per gallon. Your choice.
@hlwra1

You stated towards end you need to charge at 86% which was what we picked it up at. No, it was at 87% when you picked it up. No walk around with agent to check for damage before accepting the car?
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan Месяц назад
True, I was off by 1% but since I didn't want to get dinged $25, I overcharged it slightly anyway. Sooner or later someone will be unable to match the departing state of charge % and will have to eat the $25. I mean if you got it nearly full and return it nearly empty, it might actually be close to what you'd pay for a full charge at a Supercharger anyway. We picked up the car form Hertz's self-pickup so nobody walks out with you. We took pre-departure videos of all the dings, scratches, and curb rash. Nobody every questioned us about it upon check-in or even after the rental.

Hertz should charge them. Bringing them back at the same charge level is really customer unfriendly.
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 4 месяца назад
There definitely should be a better solution. Once again, it's people who don't drive EVs that set the policies. Maybe charge you a nominal recharge fee based on a graduated percentage that you bring it back below 80%.

Every rental Tesla (and most Teslas period) have curbed wheels.
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 4 месяца назад
There's something about that wheel design sticking out. So far we've been lucky and careful with our personal Model, but that rental had all four wheels curbed. I recorded it all upon pickup just in case Hertz came back with a damage claim.

No wonder Hertz is getting rid of all their EVs. What a hassle. The more I see all the non buttons and dumb screen to right of driver, to hell with EVs and especially Tesla.
@0e-michigan
@0e-michigan 4 месяца назад
They didn't get rid of all their EVs. They had plenty there in San Diego and they're not going away. Don't believe everything Faux Entertainment feeds you. Again, don't like it, don't rent it, simple as that. For people who actually know how EVs work- rather than those who think they know it because someone else tells them - it's no big deal.

Sounds like Hertz does a very poor job. No onsite chargers, no $99/year enhanced connectivity. Really disgraceful.
