Tesla FSD gets Overly Aggressive: The Sequel 

Wow. This video is perfection. The routes, the commentary, the multi perspective video, the overlay, omg. Probably more helpful in understanding FSD than any other source.

Yours are the best FSD videos by far. No silly self conscious giggling. No panic on disengagements. No emotional roller coaster. Just smooth as silk delivery of the goods with style and detail. Thank you!!!

That transition to the outro starting at 22:25 almost bordered on mastery... I'm not sure I have ever seen such a smooth and satisfying one.

Wow the SF road planners made a real mess of these roads 😮 Lots of good data for the Tesla team!

Here in the UK, these SF videos are of extra interest because the narrow roads forcing a bit of turn-taking through tighter sections are a lot more like home. Lots of direct drive to driver communication at times! Got to say too, 11.4.1 seems like a bit of a step change forward in behaviour.

I actually like the more aggressive behavior, especially in cities like sf or ny where people simply do not let you in.

The pedestrians crossing on your green (around 16:30) was handled perfectly by FSD. Slowing down to show it won't actually run them over, but still move up real close to show they're in the wrong. I probably wouldn't done little different in such a scenario

I like that FSD Beta works great in California with variety of difficult scenario! When using Beta in the Mid-West, it really struggles in the most basic intersections, round-a-bouts, and even 4-way intersections with stop signs.

Love your transitions from the Rear Following View to the normal view. Gives a great perspective.

19:40 I've consistently seen the beta try to take a right on red whenever it considers the maneuver as "rightward" enough to signal. Easily the biggest safety issue I've encountered with it

I feel like having Disengagements Per Hour would be a good metric to have if you do a summary at the end. If you did a 20min drive, multiply D by 3, if you drive 30min, D*2, 2 hours is D/2 etc. Very cool ride, though! Curious about smoothness Lombard St (even though I know it's been done to death on previous versions already).

7:59 I agree with you that the preferred approach was the one FSD took: smoothly turn right into the leftmost lane. Surprised to hear people griped at you about such turns. (This is in "my neighborhood," which emanates from just across the Panhandle at Lyon.)

It does so much better than I would. I get overloaded when there’s tailgating, honking, pedestrians and limited visibility. Good to have multiple ‘eyes’ on the road.

Great content … I too am using the beta in SF and bay area and am in awe of how good it is getting. Yesterday it made a left and accelerated quite aggressively to utilize a small gap in the oncoming traffic. It’s amazing how confident it’s getting.

Love the detail of your analysis! You are helping the process immensely by finding things like the going through red lights problem! I saw this on my drive too.

Self driving cars that you can buy/own are great for point A to B, especially for going to unknown areas. You only have to pay attention to the wrong things it might do, where as if you were driving yourself, you'd have to pay attention to the correct map/street address/turning points/new roads/landmarks/etc. Most people dont realize how useful it currently is. It will be even more useful as it becomes better and better at catching the fails and correcting itself.

I think the interaction with the couple crossing the red light was very good.Pretty much the same as I would have driven, slowing down ready to stop, but still approaching them. I can't wait for FSD to come to Europe

I'm familiar with most of the drives in this video and as the families designated driver, I can attest that most humans would not do well navigating the streets of this drive. I'd go so far as to say it is well beyond the skill level of most drivers and FSD does a terrific and safe job of navigating the mean streets of San Francisco. Amazing progress by the Tesla FSD Team and with the neural network kicking in, it should be orders of magnitude improvement with each new version. Your videos are the gold standard of FSD videos and my hope is that the neural networks will mean real time updates to FSD without having the issue software releases ... you know, like human learning. This will allow my wife to realize her dream of the electronic chauffeur for her Model 3 and future Tesla vehicles. As for me, only incapacitation will keep me from driving myself. 🙂

If you haven't already: I would love to see a video where you compare some of the first versions of the beta to the new one (like a side by side or something). Might be a fun way to re-use old footage and show how much it's improved - just an idea:) Great video!

This looks amazing -- I'm personally not super picky about whether it's slightly more or less aggressive, instead preferring improvements to awkwardness and unpredictability. My two biggest complaints are still turn signals and that it gets _more_ jittery (including with the accel pedal) in uncertainty, not less. I don't know if it's improving because the uncertainty handling is getting better, or if there are just less situations where it's uncertain, but I'm glad to see it. I wish there was some sort of clamp on how hard it's allowed to jerk the wheel the moment after the path planner makes a drastic jump, because those are the scary situations where it's suddenly decided to cut across lanes in an intersection or something. A jumpy path planner should be dampening the steering wheel and lowering the speed until it figures out what's actually safe/correct to do next. I'd also love a chime specific to uncertainty, like we get with construction, like "hey, I'm probably about to mess up". Which brings me to my biggest fear, that it doesn't actually know it's uncertain in those moments. 😅 Anyways, great videos!

I greatly appreciate your excellent narration. I also like the large area display of the FSD screen. It shows very clearly what the car is planning and how it intends to interact with other traffic.

Finally a video about Mexico scenarios . 1._. 4:22 Here we have a lot of intersections without traffic lights with peak hour traffic were you have to be agressive or take turns merging. 2._. 7:06 Very common to turn on the reverse lights, with the car behind leaving space for us to do Reverse Parallel P.arking 3._. 10:24 Its now or never. Sometimes you have to jump lanes aggressively to take the turn, or it is a 2 miles deviation. Please please, do more of these ones. You rock !

Very impressive! I definitely see the advantage of driving in an area with lots of data. Living in a less populated area in AZ, (roads/maneuvers much less complex than SF), I have more disengagements. Looking forward to AI/NN/Data spreading everywhere geographically. Awesome video!

I thought the right-of-way assertiveness in the presence of jay-walking pedestrians was really good... At least in that specific situation. I'd like to see more trials of similar situations to gauge how safe it really is, but what it did here just before 17:00 is pretty much what I would have done.

I bought a Model 3 last month and have added the FSD subscription to try it out. I received the beta in the last update. Watching your videos is great to see how it acts in many different situations. Thanks for sharing!

Appreciate your honest assessment AiDriver! I have similar experiences, but tend to disengage more often because I’m not as brave as you. I was in SF today, and FSD wanted to make a left turn when it was not allowed; so I had to disengage. Wonder if it was a mapping issue.

If they get this working in San Francisco, getting it to work in Europe will be a breeze. All the stop signs, 4-way intersections and left hand turns are a nightmare, in my city I think I could count those on one hand. Roundabouts and traffic lights make driving so much more straightforward.

When I watch your videos, as an engineer, I marvel at the system. From detecting objects, signs, to deciphering human behaviour, to control of the car. It’s bewildering how what it’s doing is possible. But I also see how far we are. For this to work fully properly, it needs to understand human gestures for example.

It's also fun to see the beautiful city too! I live in Oklahoma and every road is "go straight, turn 90 degrees, go straight". It looks really hard to drive in San Francisco....

I am not a Tesla owner and don't plan on buying one anytime soon, but I can't deny that autopilot has come a long way from FSD V8. Keep up the excellent work. Oh, for the lane change, at 7:30, while making a turn, I generally do the same. If there is no oncoming traffic, I switch to the most left lane I need or going to change to eventually. Usually, if I am at a red light and change to green, with no other vehicle on the left-hand side coming, I sure turn to the left lane. That is if there is no vehicle turning in that same direction. I am in NY.

Amazed how well it works in SF. In Virginia on 11.3.6 I still can't get to the gym and there is only 1 left hand turn. FYI, in VA you can cross white lines and even change lanes in an intersection.

In Europe there is a general ban on parking closer than 30 ft from the corner of a curb. That reduces the number of parking spots in old towns with short streets, but it really makes life easier driving.

i love how it doesn't block that intersection. better than 90% of humans.

you should count interventions/ disengagements per hour of use in each beta to try and compare them

Awesome commentary and picking the most 'troublesome' venues to test real life situations. I'm looking forward to my 14.1 release, hopefully soon. I just drove back from Lake Tahoe to Los Gatos, CA using FSD 13.6.8 about 97% of the driving time with only a handful of interventions, non critical!

Amazing!! Love the quallity of this channel. It's impressive how the Tesla could see and predict some situations. Two months we can see an amazing improvement, I'm always thinking how the car will be five years later.

12:18 Cool that FSD shows the brake lights on the double-parked car-though ideally it could do so blinking rather than solid to acknowledge its emergency flashers.

I really appreciate this video. There are too few FSD videos showing such complexity and giving the insight / detail re the FSD decision making, good and bad points, improvement, etc. In comparison there are far too many videos showing only simple scenarios, normal roads, low traffic, and claiming FSD is good to great. Like we KNOW FSD is pretty darn good on divided highways already, for example. Your videos help me understand that the progress is real and effective in even complex areas, with enough training. The real challenge will be getting the full suite of needed skills AND enough consistency for a wide-area robo-taxi capable L4 network.

Definitely need some Florence Nightingale energy to come up with a good way to present FSD stats data that will be comparable between runs. I've been watching Chris from DT since the start and i still think there must be a more intuitive way to graph disengagements and interventions. Maybe you can find a way that becomes the standard!

When turning right in CA, you must end up in the right lane unless you are in another designated late, in which case, you must end in the designated lane. When turning left, you can end in any safe, legal lane.

when it moved up into the intersection where it had previously left a gap for turning vehicles, it actually WAS the right move. It saw that traffic ahead had started moving. That combined with no cars on the opposite side of the road made it a great move

7:40 I liked the way it went over multiple lanes. Here in Finland, the traffic rules specifically allow this kind of move *if* the lane changes to do it otherwise would be very fast because in that case, going directly to the intented line reduces risk of accident. However, the rules also say that the driver doing this manouver must yield to all traffic so you have to be careful with that action.

It is impressive, so I headed out to try it here in Canada and it did surprise me especially moving over to the left when passing an 18 wheeler. It does not understand roundabouts as we have lots of them here in Ottawa

Near the end when you were talking about the car stopping at a red light with the turn signal on, there were railroad tracks there. I think it was avoiding stopping on the tracks.

I really enjoyed watching that (2 part) video 😊 Here are some of my thoughts: - If you add a summary, it would be nice to break the disengagements etc. down to driving time and/or driven km (miles if you must 😉 ) e.g.: 1.7 disengagements/hour or so. That would help to compare the different autopilot versions. - I think you do a great job of estimating the risk of a driving situation and giving the AI enough room but disengage if necessary - appreciate all the awkwardness you have to go to at times! ;) - As a (sadly) not tesla driver it took me some time to figure out what the white messeges showing the AI intentions are - Your visualisation with all the details you put in is incredible and hepls unterstanding whats going on. Also your very well timed narrative explaining a situation is super interesting and gives insight of what's going on! Looking forward to thr next video, thanks 😊

Suggestion: put chapter markers in the video to the most interesting highlights for people short on time. Put the marker at the time you start discussing/describing the upcoming incident. I watch all the way through, but you''ve mentioned many don't, and that's likely just a matter of available time. Give them a tl;dr by skipping through to the highlights (without needing to edit down a 2nd short video).

2:23 I dont know your local laws but in the netherlands it is illegal to park or stop (for other situations than traffic) within 5 meters of an intersection. Doesnt stop all people from doing it though.

4:00 the cars were stopped illegally though, you could clearly see the “keep clear” on the street 🤷‍♂️ Edit: If you look at the lines painted on the ground the car was actually making the right decision to take the far left lane. But because the cars were blocking the intersection it tried to adapt which resulted in the broken path chosen. It was making the right decision though.

13:20 I think the high contrast of the tree shadow causes the camera vision system to guess that the road surface is so bad that it shouldn't go straight forward.

I agree with all of your comments. I think you have a great understanding of what is appropriate driving. You're doing great! I wish the die hard rule followers would take a chill pill. If fsd followed all the rules, it would cause more accidents and frustration on the road. Doing what other people expect you to do is more important for safety. I think fsd couldn't have done better in a lot of these situations. It's really amazing how far it has come.

19:50 You're looking at it the wrong way, it has the right turn signal on because it's thinking that it's doing a right turn on red.

We're at the beginning of a new era. FSD is learning, and so are we. It did fantastic overall. It's difficult for mankind to give up control of their surroundings. But we shall adapt regardless.

You have to remember FSD is being trained on the east coast too. When the radio starts playing Shippin' up to Boston and it goes into cheetah mode....

Adding something about distance driven with battery usage would be good for the summary at the end that you mentioned to add at the end of the video. Gives you an idea how the range is and how the disengagements are vs distance in a different video.

You note at ~07:30 that in California it is legal to turn into a lane other than the closest lane, and I think some of the confusion stems from the DMV drivers manual and vehicle code only stating that right turns into any lane are only allowed for right turns starting from a one-way streets onto one way streets. Eg section 6 of the California DMV handbook states, in the section for right turns, "Complete your turn in the right lane. Do not turn wide into another lane." and also "Right turn. Begin and end the turn in the lane closest to the right edge of the road. Do not swing wide into another lane of traffic." Compare to "6. Right turn from a one-way street onto a one-way street. Start the turn in the far-right lane. If safe, you may end the turn in any lane."

I have driven, as a resident, in 10 states and 26 cities (8 in California). I can tell you FOR SURE not only are the laws different, but the "accepted/acknowledged rules of the road" depend on the area more than the law for sure. Looks like it's adapting to that, which is dope!

I have never turned into the right most lane on a one way if I needed to get in the left lane to make a turn soon after. There is no state that requires you to make a series of lane changes to get in the far left lane, as far as I know. As long as you are clear to enter the lane and there is no cross traffic, you are legally allowed to enter whichever lane you need to in order to proceed through the intersection.

I personally wish tesla wouldn’t have to account for differences in traffic laws. As a software engineer I can tell you that dealing with different laws in different regions is a nightmare. The easiest way to do it is if the law exists somewhere just do it everywhere

its my first time watching one of these. i'm super impressed with how it drove. I've driven through there a few years back, definitely a ''down town" driving experience which it did better than most people unfamiliar with the area would have done. I guess it knows the roads and lane setups though so technically it does know the area.
