I’ve been part of the Tesla fam for around 5 weeks now and have been binging on your vids for a little longer than that (I also love Saint Ives). I feel compelled to comment and say that you make really great videos and are a fantastic presenter (my wife hates RU-vid but even she said how good you are when I was watching one of your videos yesterday), keep doing what you’re doing and all the very best to you.
Just echoing what most have said here. Love your videos as they are very informative. One request that isn’t Tesla related is to have more B rolls. 😄 Loved how your wife filmed the food festival and wish you had more throughout the journey. I live in New Zealand and have never been to Manchester or St Ives. I always look forward to the B rolls as a result. Regarding the Tesla, I’m keen to know if you have noticed any battery degradation after a year? Also with supercharger prices now increasing, I think it would be very interesting to consider what the cost and returns would be like if you install a home charger vs the supercharger network for your everyday usage within Manchester? Just a thought. Keep making these videos. Yours are by far the most informative and visually interesting videos. Your wife’s cinematography skills deserves a lot of credit for that. 👍🏼
Thanks Jeremy really appreciate it. Haha I'll try and get in more B-Roll next time! Its great to hear you're getting to explore a little of the UK via the videos! 👍 So regarding the deegradation I'm just text Tesla to see if they can let me know if the battery has declined at all
Great Video Mark. I did a road trip in May covering 640 miles over two days in my nearly 3 year old Model 3 LR. Fully charged at home, charging at Norton Park 47 kw @ 49p first day, overnight stay in Taunton using chargers for small top up (not Tesla) near McDonalds and final charger at Michaelwood 46kw @ 48p Total charge. The whole trip cost me less than £70 if I include home charging. Michaelwood on the day I went during the week late morning had one other car when I arrived and one turned up whilst charging. Norton Park had no cars at the charger. There’s definitely more chargers popping up all over. Never needed to wait for a charger yet.
I stopped at Cribs Causeway for a quick splash and dash from North London to Llenelli and achieved a 900 mph charge for a bit. Did a 450 mile round trip in a M3 sr in a day with just that and 2 stops for food etc. Agree, it’s hard to find those chargers, let alone getting back out!
Co-incidentally did Liverpool to Southampton then on to Cornwall and back up north last weekend in our VW ID3. Only had it for a week, first EV so interesting experience. Stopped at a large Instavolt installation in Banbury off M40 (16 stations) on way to Southampton. Topped up at a bppulse in a hotel car park 5 mins from our B&B. On way to Cornwall stopped at Exeter services, large Gridserve (16 again I think) Few 50kW chargers within 10 mins of the Haven park while in Cornwall. Only painful moment was the M5 on the way home, no large installs, just 2 space Gridserves at most service stations, damn things meant to be 120kW but lots of reports of them being stuck at 30kW which was the case when we stopped. One hour of twiddling thumbs for a 40% top up meh. Other than that it was a super easy trip, even with three kids! Might not be a Tesla but still love the EV driving experience 😉
Interesting video. I did a 500 round trip at the weekend to Newquay. Charged overnight to 100% with off peak cheap tariff as I’m lucky enough to charge from home and then I always make sure I stay at a hotel with charging these days as loads do and if I can never get into those specific hotels i always stay as close to one that does and then ‘use their facilities’ aka have a pint and charge for free. I’ve noticed a massive difference in cost too at the super chargers but if planned well, the reality is there’s so many free ones knocking about that if you have the time it really can still cost next to nothing to run! Good video keep up the content 👍🏻
We got our Model 3 a few weeks after returning from a big York - Cornwall roadtrip....gutted I haven't had a chance to test our long range M3 on this drive yet. Really interesting concept for a video to see what's changed - I remember watching your original Cornwall video where you charged at a Tescos with free referral miles and did the whole thing without any charge at all. Hopefully with greater EV adoption and Tesla's decision to trial non-Tesla EVs being able to use them, this will increase the number of superchargers available.
Great as always and nice you visited Snives again as us locals would call it :-) I'm off to Paris motor show as only my 2nd long road trip. Like you I don't have home charging and no local SuC so Podpoint it is.
Great video again Mark. Thanks for taking us along. Will say that going a bit deeper in the state of charge, would make your charging even better speeds. We try to arrive with 5-10% at the superchargers when going on road trips
Good video again Mark and great effort replicating year on year… We did a trip In the SR+ 5 of us did a 800mile round trip Lancashire to Cornwall last week. Cost £35 would have been £58 if had to pay for the bonnet charges which were free (and include 350kw ionity) £23 92kw @25p bonnet (actually free) £19 supercharging, £15.78 Hubsta £1 Home charging back to 100% would be 7p a mile vs ~20p in our diesel. Guess you must be nearing end of your referral supercharger miles so perhaps try a Bonnet video and get some referral credit /charges that way? 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Jimmy, thanks for the comment thats great, can't beat £35 for 800 miles thats great! What are the bonnet chargers? I haven't heard of this before
Hi Mark I am a big fan of your videos and find them very relevant. I hope it's ok that I make a suggestion 🙏 A video where you let a person who has never tried a Tesla before or who hasn't watched RU-vid How to video (e.g. my girlfriend 😅) let them try it after a short instruction, just to show how quickly you can basic. We are expecting a Tesla in 17-18 days and all the videos I show my girlfriend to prepare her have done the opposite 😬 I think many future (concerned) Tesla owners will appreciate such a video 🙏 best regards Rasmus
Hey Rasmus, thanks so much. Yes thats a good idea, (I'll have to make sure I have a good driver though haha!) I did think about doing a 'Tesla Basics' video too
Mark, you’ve found your sweet spot with your terrific travel videos! We are now on our first road trip in our M3LR from Bisbee, Arizona to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and are very pleased with the supercharger network here in the states. Our cost/kWh are much less than what you describe in this video, but then, we don’t get to enjoy St. Ives, either! I will compute costs and efficiency and share with you later, but so far, so good. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Robert glad you're enjoying the travel style videos! Oh wow, that road trip from Arizona to Colorado sounds amazing, would love to do something like that! Have fun! (you should film some of the journey would love to see it!)
@@MBrown Thanks! It’s been a learning experience, for sure. We are averaging 25-30% the cost of comparable gasoline here. The computer seems to be negative 5-10% off in its estimate of our charge at arrival. My favorite stop so far was in a little Colorado town, Poncha Springs, with 8 superchargers. The sign reads “Gas, Deli, Tesla” - such a hoot!
Hopefully moving forward a combination of Tesla & Gridserve will have more chargers at all the motorway services and on both sides of the services too.
Great video Mark. I recently drove from Berkshire to Luxembourg in my Model 3 RWD and was surprised how stressless it was. One or two chargers on route (top up at Eurotunnel while I wait). Charges broke up the journey nicely.
Thanks mark I've had my Tesla blinkers on for a while now but think I'll stick with my 2019 Mercedes B200d AMG line which easily gives me 60-70mpg in summer and recently did a 515 mile road trip that cost around £70 in diesel..
Thanks Mark - informative as always & glad to see some of my supercharger referral miles being used!!! I see more & more Teslas here in Spain - the revolution is happening!
Thanks for the video Mark, very interesting. We're off end July on a euro trip in our LR from Staffordshire to Belgium, Germany, Switzerland then back up through France home. Will be interesting to see how busy the Superchargers are throughout Europe during the summer holidays 🤔
Nice review and comparison. I had a return road trip of 580 miles to York from Ashford(Kent) with only 4 supercharger stops (Cambridge and Ferrybridge - outbound and Ferrybridge and Dartford - return) it was £70.61 for supercharging, 174kWh and average 297W/mile in my M3LR 2021. I agree that supercharging prices are pretty much doubled recently, but still love the car very much.
And at the rate it's going, it won't be long before petrol and diesel has doubled. So you'll still have an advantage..... Your journey by train would have cost £400+ return......
Great video and very informative. Dont forgot there are other savings with Tesla Ownership that you need to factor into your journeys such as currently zero rated road tax and no mandatory requirements for servicing so over the cost of ownership you are making more than just basic fuel saving.
Yeah I’m hoping they start to add a few in each town, would make things so much easier. (even a couple at the odd petrol station would be handy.) Hopefully BP, Shell etc will instal loads of good ones soon
The Gordando services are the closest to the Tesla collection point at Portihead, we collected our Model 3 with about 30% battery to get back to south wales, so had to charge, but Gordano was full so had to go to Cribbs too.
Hi Mark.. I have also had trouble with full chargers at Gordano.. they could do with a few new ones added. Good to hear strawberry fields have fitted some chargers as this is down the road from my parents so I can go check this out. Thanks
Sorry to hear that Paul, yes its getting very busy there. Yes Strawberry fields had two Podpoints (one at either end of the car park) and it was 25pkwh so half the price of the Supercharger too
Great video which shows that EVs can be just as practical as ICE for the long journey. Only issue for me was that you used 45mpg for the previous car even though you mentions getting upto 60mpg, on a long journey like this that would have achieved more like 50-55 mpg meaning the cost analysis would have been closer. The rising price of public charging really does eat away at the 'savings' if you can't charge from home, which has currently stopped me upgrading. Personally I believe the only savings available are if you can charge from home, savings which are getting smaller with recent and future rises in energy prices.
Thanks so much Jordan yes I do think with the Mercedes I could easily match the price of the Tesla (I just thought people would slam me if I said I could get 60mpg even though I can! haha!)
Great video as always. Lovely destination, I will try to get there this summer. To save money I always try to find a hotel with a destination charger, that would have saved you quite a bit (depending on the hotel rate). It also would have saved you time as you could arrive nearly empty and charge overnight...... but you already know that :). Regards
Thanks so much Mel, yes its 100% worth a visit if you can get down and getting a hotel with a charger is a great idea! Also saves a load of money in fuel terms too! I try to do that as much as I can
I’m really disappointed they have opened up the superchargers to all. Queueing will become more frequent. The network was a key rationale for buying Tesla. The only advantage now is the FSD and at the moment they still don’t have that anywhere near where it needs to be for the UK. They need to lobby the Government to get rid of this turn this and click that, which is distracting and defeats the object. Just let the car do it’s job which on motorways it can do well if I could focus on the road and not have to keep looking at the screen to know when to nudge the steering wheel. Great video though. Thank you.
Very interesting Mark 🙏🏻 Great comparison to last year and appreciate your openness with the costs involved. My 2011 S3 would be £142 minimum for the same mileage 👍🏻 So whilst a difference in Supercharging costs, it’s still cheaper. Good to see the Tesla network getting sorted out down that way. We’re going to Penzance this year and I dread to think what the petrol costs will be by then from Nottm and back! 😯 😂
Hey Richard, yeah and plus you can also find little supermarkets and hotels with free charging which is always a bonus (there is a Tesco in St Ives we use sometimes which is free for 90 mins, so a couple of top ups there and it brings the journey cost right down)
Hi Mark it’s interesting how the prices have increased, still savings to be had, I’m lucky to have off peak home charging and tend to book short breaks filtered down to having a charger which allows for ridiculously cheap travel example £1.50 to travel £280 mile round trip last week including free charging at the destination 👍🏻
Hey Teslasareus! Yes seems to have jumped so much over last two months, so I'm hunting around for as many free chargers as I can these days! Yes thats a great tip 👍
Great video. I get my model y at the end of this month got a few trips I have to do in the first few weeks where I know I’ll have to supercharge hopefully getting down to Cornwall soon as well
Thanks for the informative video. I live in Manchester and am thinking of buying a Model 3. How much more congested do you think the Tesla superchargers will be as Tesla open them up to other cars? I understand other users will have to pay more though.
Hey Chris oh that's great, how long have you been going there (or do you live there now?) yes there are a few more chargers about and one at the Tescos in Carbis bay too
@@MBrown we have been coming for over 10 years and are lucky enough to have a house in Downalong. I saw the chargers at Tesco but plan to use Redruth probably. Our trip is 300 miles one way.
Very interesting. I charge at home and have used 1505kWh over 5,000 miles. At 5p per kWH those 5,000 miles have cost me £75. Not too bad. However if I ever had to do a longer trip I'd need to supercharge so this video has been very helpful thanks.
Hey Chris thanks for the comment wow thats great! Can't beat home charging at that price, so good! I didn't mention it in the video, but also choosing hotels with free chargers is a great way to get trips like this for free too
I think there is a flaw in your analysis of the cost compared to your previous car. You say that the return journey from Manchester to St Ives is 530 miles. I believe its approx 350 miles one way, so your cost in the Diesel would be about 30% greater than quoted.
Hey Tom, thats interesting! The Tesla did crash during the journey... I didn't even think about it, but maybe the computer deleted some miles? Very odd
Great Tesla video as always Mark. I just cancelled my premium connectivity, is this something you use ? As I prefer the map setting in colour. Keep up the good work as always. 🤘🏻
Thanks Fraser, really appreciate it. yes so I had it cancelled too but ended up buying again for live traffic and colour maps... shame as £9.99 is a lot for the little extra we get. Should be more like £4 a month. I could use my phone, but don't want to kill my phone battery using it for 5 hour drives
Interesting video. I've noticed in my model 3 if you can drive steady at 60mph it makes a massive difference and can average well over 4 miles per kwh which would make the journey about £60 on the superchargers.
Really does!! I went for a random drive 20 miles up the motorway, a route I've done regularly but always at 70, but instead never went above 60 and came in at 193wh/mi. Over 5mi/kWh!
Mark, nice to see the wife at long last, you are very lucky man. Noticed a can of wine £7.50 ouch! looks a lovely place. BTW can you show how to set up the tesla (non tesla EV) app as PAYG rather than a monthly charge? With the current price of diesel your savings would be greater but the days of cheap EV driving appears to be going away and the oily brigade will be cheering i.e. you only saved £15 and spending more time charging. Still wouldn't go back though.
Thanks I'm very lucky, she has to watch me do 1000 takes to get some words out haha! As I don't have another EV, I'm not sure I can setup the Tesla app again for PAYG?
I think the superchargers are getting expensive now i had a model 3 now own a y i think at 50 pence is getting up there now lidl pod points you can get for 26pence only 50 kilowatt but good price government need to be careful here and the charging companies if they want people converting to evs i use octopus at 7.5 pence which is ideal but if you do long journeys then can be expensive great video though always informative 👍
Unfortunately there are no real cost savings to have a Tesla anymore and when they open up the super chargers to other electric vehicles… well I hope you like queuing!
Hey John, yes its getting closer to ICE cars for sure. There’s still a nice saving in terms of servicing etc. I’d still go for an EV just for the local environment pollution issues.
@@MBrown yes and it is nice when you get a free charge every note and again and of course the satisfaction of someone in an ice pulling up next to you at the lights 🏁
I think that before long any cost advantages of owning an electric car over petrol will disappear. Especially given the price of electricity & other costs.
A Family Diesel wouldn't need any Stops 820 miles range I mean surely you wouldn't drive for 12 hours straight although you could with multiple drivers However it's simply about choosing where , how long , when , or (if ) you want to stop ✋️ 🤔 Completely disregarding the car needs and 100% focusing on your needs or Family needs
Hey I would counter that with a few things. You get a bit of a cheaper journey, AutoPilot, so 80% of the journey I could chill out a bit more too. We roughly do stop when we want, but you're right you are limited to Supercharger places
@@MBrown I get your Point however with EVs you simply can't talk about Charging Costs , because prices (are not regulated) here in the UK Ionity increased prices to 89 pences per KW which equates to $1.07 per KW also here Tesla Superchaging price Doubled on ( All ) stalls , ( No Warning and No justification required 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♂️
@@MBrown I will probably get some Slack for this , however I find the Model 3 road Noise umberable compared with my Diesel at motorway speeds 😳 I m not sure if its because of the Weight or the lack of sound deadening material 🤷🏻♀️ I also find the suspension in the Model 3 unconfortable perhaps the Springs need to be harder to deal with additional weight , Positives : OK its fast however that might be a negative duo to a high discharged rate when pushed
Hi nice video. Confused by your "how much did it cost " section at the end- £115.24 for 530 miles. If as you said Supercharging was 48p a KWH then that would give you an efficiency of 2.2 miles per KWH ! Is the 530 miles return journey correct ? Google Maps /ABRP makes it more like 700 miles return not including any local mileage when you got to St Ives. 700 miles would give you 2.9 miles per KWH which is still probably worse than I suspect you did on the trip.
It's no longer worth it for me , from free to £114 , my diesel does around 820 miles range and costs around £97 to fill up even at Current Diesel prices , however for me is the inconvenience of constantly being forced to stop , where I don't want to stop 😳 as supposed to picking where to Stop , and picking how long to Stop for or choosing to skip stops if there's no facilities around rulting Diesels are now cheaper to Drive than EVs
@@bobjohn3108 remember ,if you want to know what is going to happen Tomorrow research what happened Yesterday , Diesels were once considered Green in fact , my Diesel is still Exempt from Road Tax duo to low emissions , what do you think it will happen to electric cars 🤔
Great video, me and the wife are foodies, so will deffentily check out the st Ives food fest next year!!! How are you find charging the car, now that tesla has opened them up to non tesla cars? Are you seeing allot of non tesla at the super chargers? Interested to hear about your experience.. How is your range anxiety also when you relised the tesla altered your route, I would be worried that the ones at Bristol would have been full!!!!
Hey Danny thanks for the comment and yes I'd definitely recommend the festival for a day visit, great fun! So in terms of the chargers it really is getting a lot more busy, first year I never qued once for a charger, now nearly 4 times I've turned up an they have been full (and it's not even summer holidays yet!) So I kind of go with the flow of the car, the good thing is you can see how many are free on the map as it shows a number of free chargers in the red circle 👍
Great one, I enjoyed this video! What % of the journey did you use autopilot and How was the phantom breaking in this journey? Do you also see PB issue improving over time?
Hey Tugberk I use AutoPilot around 80% of the journey which is great when the journey is this long. I didn't have a single Phantom Break this time either which is a bonus!
@@MBrown amazing, glad that you didn’t have any phantom breaking incident. Another thing I wonder is sentry mode. Do you use it when you leave the car outside in unknown locations? I keep hearing that sentry mode consumes about 7% of the battery per day when left on. Is that correct based on your experience?
Very interesting. I wondered what drain on your battery there would be from the windscreen wipers and additional lights when you were driving in heavy rain, and it didn't look too bad. I guess if it had been in the winter when you needed heating, that would have a big impact.
Great video but the costs at the end is not at all representative of what it costs to drive a Model 3 using superchargers at the moment. There is something wrong with your car or your maths. I have recently driven a Model 3 LR from the Midlands to Munich and back (1750 miles) which is a 99% motorway route and 130kmh speeds on the continent.. averaged 240watt per mile.. your car does 450 watt per mile in UK according to your figures. Why don't you just show and record your watts consumed using the trip function ?
Hey Richard I’m currently filming a new video with a daily drive, so will pop them all into that video. The car screen actually crashed during the drive and I think it’s actually missing off 50 miles potentially, very weird! The cost is £0.48pkw though so it’s gone up a lot recently
Any further phantom braking incidents since the first video? I thought that was a US phenomenon due to radar being removed over there. Unless it’s gone from uk models as well?
Generally no, most are Tesla only, however Tesla recently opened a small number of the less busy UK SuperChargers to other brands at a higher price, none of the one's Marc visited are in that trial. If you want to roadtrip, buy a Tesla.
I think you made a slight mistake in your comparison calculations my friend. You compared the cost of your charging for your entire journey to the cost of diesel for the a amount of miles but you filled up when you got back to Manchester in your Tesla meaning you have a full tank again (or 90%) if you did the same in your Merc it would’ve cost you another £70 or so for 90% full tank. Then again if you filled your Merc up to 90% you’d probably get more miles than what you Tesla would do on 90% charge. You could just disregard your last charge, which will make an extra £23 difference but also you wouldn’t have completely drained your battery so there would be some extra there as well, after all you have worked out the actual amount of fuel used in your calculations to empty, not how much you would have put in the tank. Just an observation but it is what a lot of people do in their comparisons. It would have been best to reset one of your trips to zero before you set off and find what your average Watt hour per mile is so you can work out how many miles per kWh you have averaged, then divide 531 by your miles per kWh to work out how many kWh you used on your trip then multiply how many kWh by the price per kWh average at the Supercharger stations. I think I got that right 😂😂😂
I have just worked out your calculations on the diesel used isn’t right either. 531 miles at 45mpg means it’ll use 11.8 gallons and a gallon of diesel @ £1.85 per litre x 4.55 litre per gallon (approx) = £8.42 per gallon (nearly) so 11.8 gallons of diesel is approximately £100. It’s late and I’m really tired so I could be wrong, I need to stop now or my mind will be going all night and I won’t sleep. 😂😂😂😂😂👍👍
Last calculation. If you are costing 531miles to have cost you £115 @ 48pence per kW that means you used 240kW for your journey. 531miles divided by 240kW means you were getting 2.2miles per kW which then means you were using 455Wh per mile. If you take a look at your “Trips” in the menu on your car’s screen it should tell you your average Wh per mile on the various trips. I’ve only had my Model Y a couple of months and, even with a fair few launches, I have averaged 240Wh per mile or 4.2miles per kW over 1500miles approx. Good night. 👍👍👍
Hey Darren, let me check but I think you might be right! I'm also going to do a new video with a trip reset and do a 'Daily driving' test to see from a full 90% charge how many miles I get doing a normal daily drive to work over a week or so
Hey Dan, yes it did seem low, I'm going to do a video on using the car as a daily driver to do some accurate tests (and also ask Tesla if they can see if the battery has degraded at all)
@@MBrown I don't know what the degradation rate is quoted at but I think there are methods of charging that help to rebalance the cells.. I don't know if it's like almost completely discharging then fully slow (7kw) charging to 100%, something to look into. I know a 100% charge on mine shows as 333 miles of range. My lifetime efficiency at 15 months and 7400 miles is 242wh/mi. 21 LR a week newer than yours, on standard 18s with aeros on
@@danpaul4975 yeah I might try that, I’ve done 15,000 miles now but get roughly 319 on a full charge (but realistically much lower than that in the real world) I’ve got the Long Range with the 19’s
