Nice video. I've had a Tesla for more than 5 years and have done quite a few longer trips like Montpellier in S. France. Planning is important but actually what I find now is that its the destinations that are key. Stopping overnight in France on the way down is always somewhere with a Tesla destination charger. Overnight you get a full battery. Same applies to the holiday accommodation. As long as you can plug in even at domestic plug charging rates (circa 7 to 8 miles range per hour) it ensures you get roughly 70+ miles added to start the next day throughout the holiday. The supercharger network then handles the rest of the en-route charging requirements easily as you found. Lastly having charging at home is important to cut journey times back as you only need to get there with 10 to 15 % charge before plugging in and again letting the car do its thing overnight. Unfortunately at present despite being tempted by other EV models its still only Tesla that have the charging infrastructure to make everyday usage a viable option. Other manufacturers need to pull their fingers out.

Thanks Mark, another great video. I've ordered a M3 LR and expect delivery before we take our holiday from Norwich to Devon, so seeing your journey really does showcase range anxiety shouldn't be a thing, even with small hiccups. That is why i went with the Tesla, the range is holds is beyond say the polestar coupled with the supercharger network just gives you confidence to travel long distances. Keep up the videos :)

We have a LR MY we just drove our first long trip from Toronto to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Stated out with a little range anxiety because of the bad cold winter weather. That quickly evaporated when we realized the car was doing an excellent job of guiding us from supercharger to supercharger at the same time adjust as needed. It also was charging very efficiently by only charging what was needed to get to the next calculated charging stop. Charging ranged from 35 minutes to as low as 8 minutes. Initially we were using a lot of battery due to cold and heavy rains. As we went further South and the weather warmed up the range was excellent at 70mph (150 to 160watts/km) charging needs that were calculated reflected the increased range. Bottom line; enter final destination and any stopovers and follow on screen instructions. It really is that simple!! This was a two day drive with hotel stopover it is amazing!!
I have a 2020 Model 3 and we have a summer holiday in Norfolk every year and never have any range anxiety. Before the Tesla I had a Nissan Leaf for 5 years and range anxiety was part of owning that vehicle. There are some other benefits to owning a tesla. * No servicing required! , * No oil changes, * you never smell of diesel, * you probably wont ever have to replace the brake pads, * there is roughly 10 times less chance of being involved in a fatal or serious injury crash.
Hey Simon of nice! Where do you visit. Yes I never have range anxiety and since this video there are now a few superchargers down that way. (at the time there were not only no superhchargers but only a handful of chargers.)
@@MBrown We always go to the same place, a small village called Little Fransham. No super chargers around there, so we normally either charge while we are out, does not take long, or use the Granny Charger over night. I like the Super charger at King's Lynn, 250Kwh

I'm currently in Almeria, Spain from London . Did London to Gibraltar last Year. Iberdrola have made this much easier this year - Now lots of 50KW charges plus a Promotion giving 2 months free EV Charging.
@@MBrown Yes. One night stay in France. No problems charging. Heading to Monaco later in month, then back to Almeria. Will use free charging I have with Iberdrola - which includes 350kw Ionity chargers.
Surely the best way to charge once at your destination is to plug in overnight where you're staying? I guess this wasn't possible in this case but it has to be the way forward for most people. All you need is a regular domestic socket.
Hey yes we were not allowed to this this at our rental, but could have done if it was a super emergency. The Tescos was only over the road, so it was a faster, easier option for us.
It won't be the way forward for city dwellers and this is the problem, the very place where an electric car would be the most beneficial, they are the least practical and who really has time to pause their journey for what can amount to hours for charging?
Good video learned a lot. I came across your site by chance I live in the US I am interested in Tesla so I have been watching a lot of videos. What I liked a lot was your travels to different towns and cities the scenery was terrific. When I was working I used to visit England quite a bit including Wales. Your videos made me think about all the good memories I have of the trips I made while I was there. Thanks again.

I did London to Torbay and then St Ives in June (Model 3). No problem. Now Cambourne - Near St Ives has 8 Superchargers. Opened recently. Making it even easier.
Great video, but you should consider trusting Tesla’s navigation, since it’s best to arrive with the smallest amount of charge possible because the less amount of energy your battery has, the faster it charges
A great video but it looked like a faff. In a fairly standard exec diesel that would’ve been one trip to the petrol station for about 10mins and that’s after spending £50k. I get the environment, noise and power benefits but your experience does not compare favourably with an ICE vehicle. Charging times and battery capacities need to improve before this is a viable vehicle for long road trips IMHO.
Not much difference as I see it. Planning from my location to St Ives is 322 miles. Starting with a full charge from home is one stop at Gordano for 33 mind to go from 40% to 95% and then straight to St Ives. I don't mind stopping once for half an hour hour loo break and something to eat.
@@djtaylorutube I can't comment on the difference as I have no experience of a BEV. The cost alone is a big negative for me personally. Also, there's no need to plan for energy top ups at all with an ICE as fuel stations are readily available. I see the benefit for city environments but not the general population. I guess we'll see how it pans out in around 20 years.
@@adrianwhitehead1950 I can understand the sentiment though planning isn't that hard, the car nav does it all. It is a change of mentality though rather than just taking a just in time approach but we've run an LPG car all over the country for over 200,000 miles. You soon get to learn where the filing stations are and there are waaaaaay fewer of those than EV charging options. We had a Leaf before on 2015 and with the limited range available, did discover that back in 2015, non Tesla public charging sucked, often out of use. That got used as the town runabout and was indeed very good at it.
Autopilot is a dream. I've personally encountered less phantom breaking over time so it is getting better but never think it won't ever happen. Just always be alert. In addition, the new vision update should dramatically decrease phantom breaking exponentially as I think phantom breaking is due to radar issues.
Yes I love Autopilot too just makes the journey 50% less stressful! Yes it’s the only time it’s ever happened to me but I think when it’s busy I stay more alert
I went to the Isle of Wight recently for a week, similar experience. Most of the public charging spaces are in hotel car parks but of course they were shut at this time. Luckily I managed to trickle charge from our accommodation overnight at no extra cost
You mention that there aren’t much chargers near st Ives? There are multiple 50KW fast charges at the A30 / st Ives junction. Should never have charge issue down there. Check out zap map! Osprey and genie point .
Hey yes there was one in St Erth, but it just would mean driving somewhere and sitting there for an hour on holiday as there isn’t much to do there. (They were my last resort options) luckily the Tesco’s down the road did the job for us! 👍
Those white tents on St Michaels Mount is where they are filming the Game of Thrones Prequel :) Also there was a couple of Killer whales spotted just off the coast at the Minack Theatre yesterday. Hi Mark, great Vlog on real world ownership. Getting there but still a long way to go with range and convenience. On long joint business trips with my Wife my 6 series BMW Diesel can easily achieve 600+ miles range , on a Manchester to our regular London, Glasgow, Cambridge(pre CV19)🥴 we will usually have a quick convenience stop, grab a coffee & switch over driving which takes 10-15 mins even a fuel stop is 10 mins. So for now it just doesn’t work to own an EV for lots of reasons. A massive innovation leap is still required in Batteries, charging & infrastructure. The manufacturers need to cap speeds and acceleration too as this seems to be an unnecessary selling point. Look forward to future Videos.
Hey Gareth, yes I was in a similar position to you, so was very worried about it. I think as long as you went for a Tesla you should be okay, as you can almost get a full charge in some superchargers in 10 to 15 minutes. However yes you are right you would probably need to stop a couple more times compared to the BMW. I had a Mercedes C class diesel and that seems to last for ever
Excellent video as I live in St Ives and thinking about getting a Tesla. There are 4 IONITY super chargers installed at Shell in Hayle (5 miles from St Ives) which are about to come online any day now, so the infrastructure, even down here is getting better all the time. This video has certainly boosted my confidence in going electric. Thanks.

Great video, but helped reassure me I did the right thing buying a Diesel at the current moment in time. I do this journey a couple of times a year, and can fill my car easily, and drive down there in one go, and still drive round for three days without needing to fill my tank, which I can currently do anywhere. Like most people, I'm not against electric vehicles, but I'm happy to let the early adopters pave the way for now, until the infrastructure and price comes down it's a no from me. I haven't watched a video or seen a review of any electric vehicle yet where range anxiety and a failure of infrastructure/streamlining of ease of use of charging points hasn't been the main issue. I fully understand the argument about most journeys being less than 100 miles, but I don't use my vehicle much day to day, as I have retired due to a serious illness related disability, and so when I do use the car, it's mainly for long distance trips of 200 miles or more, holidays/visiting friends who've moved away/specialist hospital appointments etc Lovely part of the world though, glad you're happy with the car, and hope you had a great holiday. 👍
Thanks for the comment, yes its definalty a little bit more added planning etc compared to a petrol/diesel. It doesn't bother me too much, but I think there are some big improvements to be made (i.e why doesn't every petrol station have one electric charger)

Don't know if you've ever seen a play at the Minack btw, but we've been quite a few times..... definitely one for the bucket list.....we once saw a pod of dolphins in the bay, they stopped the production and said "we can't compete with that"!

Mark, I drive a 2021 Tesla S long Range in the US. It seems easier here with the extra range (410 miles) and so many superchargers everywhere. Nevertheless, I loved your presentation because I did the same journey from Manchester all the way to St. Ives in an ICE car. It was expensive on fuel. But what a wonderful journey. We stayed with friends in Cornwall. Thanks so much for sharing.

Charge number 5 wouldn't normally work for most of us at say city supermarkets because they use ANPR and limit your stay to no more than three hours. 90 at Waitrose!
All very well until everyone starts wanting to charge then there will be fighting on the streets over a charger! Oh and don’t forget it’s not free energy someone has to suffer the pollution of production of batteries and the electricity!! I still think it’s the way forward but it shouldn’t be forced upon people without a correct plan by governments. As a low mileage user it’s better for me to purchase a cheaper petrol/diesel variant and chug along quite happily and not drag a cable across the street!😊

Nice informative trip video. We have one thing in common - I don't have a home charger either, but I am able to charge for free at work on a 11kW Type 2 charger. I'll soon be taking a trip to north Cornwall from Hampshire, which will be around 175 miles one way, and NOT in a Tesla, but a VW ID.3. I'm fully expecting it not to be as easy as your journey, but I don't think it'll cause too many problems. I can't say it'll be free either, but I don't expect it to cost too much. In the region of £20-30 depending upon how much running around I do.
I can recommend The Tregathenan House B&B! You can charge your EV and it's right in the middle of Cornwall. We drove the Model S there from Switzerland in 2018.
@@MBrown We made two stops overnight. First in Calais and then Exeter, took it easy with some sightseeing. Made the Switzerland / UK trip about 6 times in 4 years back when my parents got the Model S. Looking forward to doing it again next year with my own Model 3.
I lived in the East Midlands for several years, nearly a decade ago and I think that's the same construction in Birmingham that I experienced back then. 😂
Hi Mark great realistic video and I like the fact you drove it like you would a normal car using heating and radio whenever you like. I have the model 3 long range and it's the best thing that I have done. Hopefully later this year I will be driving across Europe covid permitting and do a few short videos too.

Some friendly advise... Radio wont affect battery, the impact is extremely small. Charging to 100 all the time also isn't great for your battery, if you can charge to 90 or even better 80. Obviously for the purpose of your trip 100 is ok, but if you can I would start on 90 and top up again to 90 if you want to preserve the life of the battery. Nice video and great production work!

Absolutely agree about using heater etc. The infotainment system isn't going to really make any difference and cars with heat pumps also little difference. Took my Model Y for a long drive, met traffic queue and the autopilot was great in the stop start traffic was effortless.

Yes it does take a lot of stop, starting and messing about getting every shot (people at the superchargers must think we’re mental 😂) so I did carry the 3-pin however the holiday let we’re not keen on letting me use it, so I thought I would act like I wasn’t carrying it with me to see if I would be ok (if those chargers didn’t work I would have used it as a last resort)
Great video, highlighting the lack of charge points around Cornwall. The Eden Project has chargers available, but not a lot of the smaller attractions like Heligan, as you found out. As a local, I can tell you used your satnav instead of the signposted route to Heligan which meant the smaller roads, so for anyone watching, there is a larger road (it at least has white lines down the centre). We are wanting to go electric, and currently drive these little lanes in a big Audi A6. You get used to driving into greenery to avoid tractors. There's a POD charging point in Mevagissey carpark now too.

@@MBrown Have fun down in West Cornwall. The hotel should be fully functional now that G7 has finished, so your Tesla chargers should be accessible too. Today, after driving for 18 years, I've had my first tyre blow out (hit a piece of metal in the bottom of the hedge) and had the experience of changing a tyre on those very same, very overgrown narrow roads. Fun.
if you can hose and wash your car at your house, im sure you could get a charger installed at home, but if the one at your work you get 4 hours free plus parking, save so much money
Yes weirdly it's about 1 metre too far, without diggin up the entire lawn... and as we might move it's not worth the £2000 it will cost for the digging and pipe laying.
Brilliant content, scenery and detailed review! Top notch! Been thinking long and hard about whether my next car will be an EV. This video has really helped me decide the UK just doesn’t have the infrastructure for EV’s yet, especially if you don’t have a Tesla. Many will disagree of course, but we all have different needs. For me it’s one more petrol X5 (on order) and hopefully the EV options will be better
Hmm I see you have the same problem with trucks on the adjacent lane. The visualisation shows that it believes the truck to swerve into your lane, this was one instance where I encountered phantom braking!

Travelled to Gordano services for first charge on a Super Charger - and realised after we had left, that you were charging next to us! You were just as friendly as you appear on your channel! Yes, absolutely as you don't need your foot on the accelerator or brake. (its a little more like being a passenger.) even thought I stay fully alert I find it more relaxing too as you're not fully focused for hours on end

Hi Mark - PodPoint app kicks you out every few days and you have to log back in - there is no indication you are logged out when you're looking at the app other than many of the charge points disappear! It's a peculiarity of the Pod Point app. Log back in and the missing charge points should reappear. If you get kicked off after 5 mins you have to unplug the cable from both car and charger and re-connect to continue using the PodPoint. Cheers.
Hey Paul thanks, yes that sounds like what happened as it just wouldn't show the charger to activate it. (It was first time I'd used the PodPoint as we don't have many near my house)
That's funny because near me in the southwest ther are many pod point most in supermarket car parks and they are free too. I have never been booted off apart from when I forgot to accept the charge cause if you don't it throws you off after 15 mins
You may have to wait a while as they seem to be holding value well. Data shows that there are very high mileage Tesla’s with batteries in good order so you shouldn’t worry about that.
I would recommend telling the owner of where you stayed about installing a 7kw home charger! They may get extra customers at their rental! Great vlog and great quality video. 👏🏻

Tesla should update the navigation to add waypoints (so we mark the extra supercharger stop during the trip). And it would be great to set a charge level that we want in the destination, which is specially useful if we don’t have a charger in our destination point and we need the extra range.
Hey yes that would be great. I did notice though if you tap a supercharger it will navigate there, then say 'Continue your journey' when its charged which is good!
Amazing video. Love the production quality and the information. So many interesting places I'd love to visit in the UK. (I sadly haven't left the US.) I hope I can own a Tesla some day. The thought of putting on auto-pilot in annoying construction/accident driving situations sounds so nice. I got a killer deal on a 2015 Leaf so I'm enjoying EV driving a ton. Here, it's free to use the chargers (only one supercharger in town and you might have to call the 1-800 number to get it reset) so it's just a huge shock to just think I can drive around for free. My previous cars were about 15 MPG (about 6.4 km/L) and had regular mechanical issues, plus the usual stuff like oil changes. What a difference. I imagine upgrading to a Tesla will be a huge boost, too--not just the features, but the range. I get about 80 miles on a full charge (currently testing what it actually is with a trip odometer but I suspect with cold weather it's more like 60-70). I don't really get much range anxiety because I overly plan on trips and I mostly just do city driving, so being about a mile from a supercharger means having 10 miles left isn't that scary. I'm also lucky enough to have a level 1 charger (takes about 3 or 4 hours to charge full) only a few blocks walk from work. Things can happen though, like in your video having a place shut down with a blocked off charger. Good to always be wary and not let it get too low.

I think you glossed over the most worrying part of this journey. A car that automatically attempts an emergency stop on a motorway! You were lucky that the pandemic had greatly reduced the traffic levels on the roads otherwise you might have ended up with the shortest, tallest, Tesla in the country! I dont believe autonomous driving will ever be safe. Far better that poeple learn to drive properly, learn to drive between two lines without lane assist, learn to park without park assist, learn to look over their shoulder before changing lanes without blind spot monitoring, learn to identify potential hazards ahead without collision mitigation. In short learn to drive!
Yes it felt odd but no crash of course and has only happened once. It has actually saved me from a crash since owning it when a car pulled in and brakes really fast.

Would be really interested to know the cost in ££'s if you didn't have referral's, and also for you to show how long (in time) you stayed at each of your 7 charges? The same journey for me would have been fill before I leave, fill once for the back, so maybe 5 to 10 mins max. Fair point. Only £35 more in my diesel and save hours in charging time, plus I bet that was spent in coffee shops. Great video by the way and electric cars are the future but the financial benefits aren’t big enough yet

I am salivating for getting my Tesla model 3... but I have a saving plan of 1 year to get the down payment money... money for the insurence (I am in a zone 3 in London so it is going to be expensive!!) and some extra money to have breathing space just to not feel that initial pressure of the first monthly payments... Mark is a better film-maker mainly because Bjorn got lazy in that department. He has the skills he just does not bother as much as he used to when it comes to making the effort on production values. That said Bjorn makes many more videos and live streams so it is a different set of tasks and goals.

Looks like you off street parking at the house. Did you investigate charging from a standard 3 pin socket? I’ve done many holidays just using “granny” charging. No worries about needing to go out your way to find public charging.
I think Devon/Cornwall are the places to drive to after getting a Tesla! Last year me and the missus did the same journey from Newcastle after getting our SR+. Stayed in Mevagissey where thankfully they had a destination charger at the hotel. Super useful. Was thinking though Mark, if you were staying at a rental house could you have been cheeky and just used the travel wall connector you get with the car, connected to a 3-pin and charge at 2KW overnight if push came to shove? Might have meant having the cable out of the window but would have done the job… Great video, super informative…
Thanks Mark, yeah lovely places to drive around, really nice place. How did you get on with yours? Yes we did ask, however they were not keen. Push come to shove I would have used it, but thought it might be more fun for the video too seeing if we can survive on public charging. (for people who maybe have no access to the plug or a hotel with no destination charging.)
@@MBrown very true I suppose. This is probably why you’re the RU-vidr and I’m not 😄👍🏼. To be honest like you said, there was some planning on charging stops, etc but honestly it was absolutely fine, even with my SR+ model 3, never suffered from range anxiety at all. Super useful to use ABRP and ZapMap along the way as well. Watched your video on FSD trial, too by the way. I had the 2 week trail and honestly, I’d have been furious if I spent a few grand on it. It always wanted to pull me into the middle lane for no reason (making me one of those annoying middle lane drivers!) and the “smart summon”…well…nothing smart about it
Have to make a video of a car making a standard journey to somehow justify a Tesla. Try it by going to places that aren't cities and find a charging point. In my local town there are a few charging points in theory, but I guarantee when you turn up there are all the taxi drivers in the town that have ev's sat there so you are screwed until they leave. The infrastructure isn't there yet and will take another 20 years to get any where near.
Hey Colin, yeah it's got a way to go however most places are fine (I've got a Norfolk trip coming up on the channel and there were chargers everywhere we went.) Cornwall is definatly tough though.
