The Tesla can seat seven people. SEVEN PEOPLE! It's basically an environmentally friendly minivan that can hang with an F12, not to mention it only costs 1/3 of the price. Tesla deserves credit where credit is due. Just like those accelerator pedals, I'm floored!

ah11980 Have you ever heard of Tesla's Supercharger network? When you drive long distance, you drive for 3 hours, then stop for 25 minutes. Grab a bite to eat and hit the restroom and the Model S is already ready before you are. Also supercharging is free. It doesn't get better than that. The Model S has liquid cooled batteries. It supercharges at 120 kW, faster than anything else out there.

Two awesome cars...but there are other comparisons besides acceleration and or top speed: Ferrari F12- exotic sports car, 2 seats, 14 mpg, starting at $310,000 Tesla P85D - premium sedan, up to 7 seats, 90mpg(e), starting at $105,000. Its amazing that the Tesla, weighing 1600lbs heavier, is being raced with the fastest production sports cars on the planet - and in the area that counts in real world driving - ie off the mark, and 0-60 acceleration, it's up there with them all. Sure, it's not got much of a top end, but Tesla's engineers weren't designing the car with that in mind.
@S3maxime16
@S3maxime16 9 лет назад
The F12 isn't the fastest production car, that would be the Veyron. But the Veyron is meant for top speed, not acceleration. Staying in the same price bracket, the Nissan GT-R will be quicker than the P85D at legal (or illegal) speeds. I don't deny the fact that the Tesla P85D isn't awesome, and it's revolutionary for an electric car, but we're not at the point where it quite competes with petrol engines though.

@lloydcarrillo3334 8 лет назад
Evander Smart You all missed the picture that, if the Tesla had a 2nd gear to shift, the race would be all over by the time the Ferrari reached 3rd gear. Consider the Tesla being a Torque monster locked up by a single speed drive train. They need to add a gearbox or a paddle shift transmission in them to unleash the real speed. "This electric car could be the next Bugatti killer!" If you observed at 0:33 the sudden speed lag is where the motor reached its peak, and would therefore need a higher gear ratio to propel it further down the line increasing its velocity. This is not about the weight as it came of the line long before the ferrari, It just got choked by being a single drive mechanism without a gearbox.
@Mianhe
@Mianhe 8 лет назад
Evander Smart yeah, and the only reason ecars are fast at accelerating is throttle response
@Mianhe

Electric motors has full torque since 0 rpm that's why it is faster at the start, once the Ferrari is in the torque zone, it demolishes the tesla, if the race would have been a full mile, the difference would have been huge

@Rugbystu14

+Carlitox b The point they want to make is that electric cars are fast despite what the majority of people believe. Electric cars are the future. Common people don't buy cars to race. Petrol cars should be kept for races only.

@carlitoxb110 8 лет назад
Marius Cristian Ciubotariu I know that, my friend, but there are some people who believe, the tesla is faster than a Ferrari and that's not completely true
@venzoah
@venzoah 9 лет назад
I think we are all forgetting how much more the Tesla weighs. If both cars were the same weight, the P85D would destroy the Ferrari. The linear and instant torque of the electric motor allows it to get the jump on the Ferarri, but because of a superior power to weight ratio of the Ferrari, it zooms past the Tesla when it reaches peak torque. There is a massive weight difference between the two cars, which makes the Tesla that much more impressive.
@FinSynthMusic
@FinSynthMusic Год назад
No we are not forgetting. The car that has more power to weight is always going to be quicker. Electric motors and batteries are the reason why the Tesla weighs so much, so it's kind of dumb to even play with the idea of them being the same weight.

No one is talking down about its acceleration numbers from 0-100mp/h. But that is the only performance part of this car that is impressive.
@loguerto
@loguerto 7 лет назад
ElmoHus I would say acceleration is the most impressive but handling is also pretty impressive for it's size and weight. It's low center of gravity and way more efficient and direct traction/stability control is something you cannot experience somewhere else. It's not a race car of course, weight is something that has to go down but still there are very positive impressions about this car's handling from all over the place.

I don't think most people understand. We're comparing a luxury sedan to a full blown sports car and it's actually beating it on acceleration. That's just crazy. Also, the P85D is new, Tesla is new and the technology they're offering is new. Think of the degree of refinement the internal combustion engine has had in the last 100+ years! And that Ferrari is a perfect example of that. If this is how it looks to begin with, imagine how superior the electric engine is (let alone how it will be) and how we've been fucked by the oil cartel into sticking with gas as long as possible.
@youtubasoarus
@youtubasoarus 9 лет назад
Finally a comment that makes sense. Most are circle jerking the Ferrari as though it's something to congratulate that it just BARELY eaked out a win. Meanwhile the TESLA is 1/4 the price, seats 7 and doesn't have to worry about getting bent over at a gas pump. Imagine those motors in the older roadster. ;)
@CraigBickerstaff
@CraigBickerstaff 9 лет назад
The technology they're offering isn't really new, the electric car has been around as long as the combustion engine has been around and the technology even pre dates the internal combustion engine.
@mlab8
@mlab8 9 лет назад
Craig Bickerstaff Again, more of the same arguing about every little detail, just for the sake of arguing. Of course the "electric engine" and batteries aren't new and have been perfected as well. But their use in cars has been suppressed the day the electric car was invented and shelved ever since. So you know very well there's no comparing the amount of work that's been done on each type of technology. Think of the many, many patents Tesla has come up with (and made public recently). Not exactly golf cart technology. Yet, it's very recent stuff. Use of lithium batteries in cars? Progressing everyday and will probably be replaced in a few years. The success of the very first iterations of these cars is an example of how progress has been blocked for a long time by corporate interests. Same goes for trucks, trains, energy production plants, to name only a few.
@CraigBickerstaff
@CraigBickerstaff 9 лет назад
m lab The electric motor may have only recently come back to the car but the idea that the technology has sat undeveloped on a shelf for a hundred years is ridiculous. The electric motor wasn't suppressed it wasn't blocked, it just moved into a different area because at the time the internal combustion engine proved itself to be more practical. It has only been recently with environmental concerns that people have begun to look at the electric motor again and Tesla only really built on those that came before them.
@mlab8
@mlab8 9 лет назад
Craig Bickerstaff You just didn't read. I said, very clearly, that the electric car tech was suppressed, not the electric engine, which is used everywhere. I also pointed out that from electric engine to real, competitive, electric car, there's quite a few steps which have only recently been taken, by a few companies. Yet look at the results. The tech was suppressed by the oil industry, it wasn't less practical at all (well, maybe at the very beginning). Explosive, stinky gasoline, dirty oil, filters, and coolant; inefficient "reciprocating engines" (think about those pistons and rods, next time you shake a can of paint). Also, these engines lose most of the energy they produce as heat, they depend on quality of spark, timing of ignition, relative valve and piston positions, piston-cylinder seal, all remaining perfect (which they don't, wasting more energy). Parasitic losses due to internal friction, oil pump, water pump and belt driven accessories (alternator, power steering, A/C...). If you had to design the most inefficient, gas consuming, oil cartel money cow you could, you would not do any better than what we've been using. Did you say something about practicality?

All those people saying Tesla is super fast. Yes they are fast only in the beginning when their torque curve is at its greatest. The power drops down exponentially as the motor spins faster due to back EMF, and will take forever to reach a certain speed
@unpackthis1842
@unpackthis1842 7 лет назад
add a gear then. Bye bye.
@FlightAce100
@FlightAce100 7 лет назад
There's no point adding a gear when its motor can't even max out the current gears. It crawls up the speedo so slowly after 130.
@Owlberti
@Owlberti 7 лет назад
Electric motors use magnetism and alternating current
@badstep495
@badstep495 7 лет назад
Well, the back EMF can be overcome by field weakening which is a common technique is such high speed high power motors. I think it is fair to assume tesla does something like that. With field weakening the power does not fall off over speed, but stays fairly constant. The limiting factor of the tesla is thus power over weight and aerodynamic drag.

futmut1000 Depending were you live in the US (not sure about the UK) there are plenty of Supercharge stations ( www.teslarati.com/interactive-tesla-supercharger-map/ ). You are aware you can charge it off of any standard power socket right? What do you drive, considering that you are such an expert on interior? The interior is pretty damn nice for its price and 7 passenger capacity. It's just a more practical car. Also keep in mind this is the fastest, least efficient version of the car. I'm sure that if you are considering buying one to use daily, you would find all the supercharge stations in your area.
@kentg529
@kentg529 9 лет назад
futmut1000 Yes, Tesla is installing Superchargers rapidly throughout USA, Europe, China, Japan and Australia. Tesla does not charge one dime to charge. And it only takes 20 minutes to recharge the battery up to half and then a bit more than an hour to go from zero to full. And, again, this costs the driver not one dime. You can already drive from Boston to NYC to Los Angeles and back to Boston for free using the Superchargers. You can also drive around much of Europe already and growing rapidly. So you go ahead and pay for the gas to pollute the earth while many of us drive quiet, pollution free, fast electric cars and we continue to laugh. Our rides are much better and cheaper than yours, but you are too damn stupid and arrogant to figure that one out.

You're original comment says "if they can afford it?", which by the way is one reason they probably chose the Tesla in the first place, because they cant afford a high end Ferrari but still want comparable performance. Them buying a Tesla is just being a smart consumer. P.s: Any enthusiast knows if you want performance you dont go for a Ferrari, as you can buy a cheap Evo and make it a track monster for far cheaper than to buy a high performance supercar.

Gas engines and electric motors have very different relationships between torque and rotation speed and futhermore, the Tesla's ability to control its torque such that it doesn't just spin its wheels much when you hammer it. The Ferrari probably has some sort of traction control too, but it can't get its highest torque at as low a road speed as the Tesla can. And remember that the Tesla's "transmission" only has one gear ratio. From what I read, all the Tesla Model Sses can lay down their max torque from nearly a dead stop up to about 45-50MPH, after which point their horsepower plateaus and drops off above about 70MPH.

Everything pretty much smokes the Tesla P85 and P90D's. The Tesla is strong out of the hole but the drawback to electric cars is just that. The power is all on the low end and they have no top speed capability. So if the "race" is longer that a few hundred feet the Tesla will get eaten up and spit out.
@snowrocket
@snowrocket 8 лет назад
Maybe you mean "no trap speed" capability, not "no top speed capability". I think the P90D is governed to 155 MPH. That's plenty fast. It makes you wonder what it'll do if the governor was disabled. It's likely just a setting in the software somewhere.
@mikebetts2046
@mikebetts2046 7 лет назад
snowrocket, it would probably require a geared transmission to overcome the speed limiting issue. Electric motors have a self-limiting behavior to them. As the speed increases, a counter-voltage is induced that limits the higher currents needed for yet higher speeds. One way to offset this is with a technique known as field-weakening, where the magnetizing field is weakened to reduce this counter-voltage. But with a weaker field you also get reduced torque. Too many people have this notion that everything electrical can be changed with some simple software fix. But there are underlying physical properties that will get in the way.
@snowrocket
@snowrocket 7 лет назад
While the principles you stated are new information to me, I stand by my previous statement about the car being governed to 155 MPH. Tesla has CHOSEN to electronicly limit the top speed, it is not limited by the motors and batteries themselves. The same is true in numerous gas cars, including my own '99 Impreza L 2.2 liter, which is governed to 109 MPH. (Just take a fleeting guess as to how I know that!) Governing is largely done due to liability concerns and the speed ratings of the OEM tires.
@mikebetts2046
@mikebetts2046 7 лет назад
snowrocket OK, you may very well be correct in there being an intentional limit in the Tesla. Easy enough to believe. What I am stating is that any electric motor has a limit to the torque it can develop (based on natural current limiting) and the RPM at which it can rotate (before it flies apart). So we can both go away from this conversation knowing that we each had a kernel of truth to our arguments. Cheers!
@anasqamar1519
@anasqamar1519 6 лет назад
Well what you are saying is true, but it is only for DC motors; Tesla uses AC motors. This means that by varying the frequency, you can adjust the torque "curve," thereby generating the required torque at a particular speed. And you see all of it with the Roadster now, because electronics is not the issue with Teslas.

IamNotANumber115 Until the crazy, insane maintenance bills come in so that you are afraid to drive the car, which is why used Ferrari's can be found with such low miles. Although a very wealthy person may not care (But man they are beautiful machines aren't they).

MRsjovealek You dont need to repair an electric motor for its entire lifetime of use. The drive train is made to last 1 million miles...
@occengineering

MRsjovealek The cost of maintenance for a normal car is much higher than an electric car, why do you think taxi companies are starting to use hybrids and sometimes even electric cars?
@DaniBarza

Pretty good considering that electric motor are "new" compared to gasoline one that ferrari studied for almost 100 years to get those performance

Electric motors were invented way before internal combustion.

Yes sorry, i mean in cars, in the past 100 years we cosidered only gasoline engines leaving electric motors for other uses

Dani Barza I get where you are going and I am on your side, but the first car to go over 100km/h was an electric car in 1901

***** no, the first real car to go 100km/h was electric. Also do you mean train?

tesla had a good launch but I can't stand these cars being used in the 1/4. it's a boring soul-less electric car

its a comfy luxury family car^ and when do 0-60 in 2,5 secs its far from soulless

Fearzzy there is nothing special about an electric car have good torque, especially when you have awd

InTheZone there is something special about the tesla, i don't see any other electric sub 3 second 0-60 family sedans around
@scottwa

I don't think there are any other sub 3 second family sedans period. One of the really cool things about the Tesla is that on the way home from spanking supercars, it can stop at Costco and load up with a couple of months worth of groceries and everyone can come along.
@InTheZone85
@InTheZone85 7 лет назад
but my point is it's still a Tesla. I get that it's convenient, but there's no thrill or maximizing the experience from an electric car, you get what I'm trying to say? I'm not saying I would own an expensive million dollar car anyway if I could afford one, but there's no substitute for a sports/super car

Now children, play nice. You know you're allowed to admire both cars, they both deserve it. The Tesla for being that quick of the line despite being a heavy family sedan that can seat 7 people or have an SUV rivaling cargo space, and the Ferrari for being an impressive sports car with amazing acceleration and top speed. To boot the Tesla is electric and costs next to nothing to run.

@I'm AnesonOD It is better than burning it in an engine, yes. But also, many countries and even many states have a high percentage of renewables, some even close to 100%. My country for instance is 99.7% renewable electricity, sadly though we still burn a lot of fuel for transport.

Michael Griffin The F12 is a neck breaking, gorgeous piece of art with one of the greatest engine sounds known to man and a beautiful design. The Tesla is a fast electric sedan for the first 5 seconds off the line.
