Tesla Model S Plaid - top speed ACHIEVED!

The previous attempt didn't go so well to reach the top speed as the traffic was too busy. Now, on my way to the Nürburgring, I had a chance to try again. This time I made sure I drove there early in the morning so there was hardly any traffic. And this time I managed to get the top speed in both track mode and regular driving mode. This is just nuts!

Of course, safety is paramount when trying to do this! But owning this beast, you have to do it once or twice. The biggest takeaway is that just because the car can do it, that doesn't me you can actually do it due to laws, road conditions, weather and other traffic. Easier said that done! I am an enthusiastic Tesla driver myself who likes to enjoy the possibilities on German highways. But based on my experience, I strongly advise against high-speed experiments, even with traffic like on the video: Germans love to drive in the left lane on the autobahn (they probably all think they're fast), and many switch to the left lane without looking in the rearview mirror. It can become dangerous in a fraction of a second! I would only do this if I was practically alone on the road.

History teaches us that Tesla has Insane mode and released Insane+ afterwards. We had Ludicrous mode and then got Ludicrous+. So yes, given the fact that this is software limited and the latest CoC actually mentions 1276HP (European horsepower), who knows what they still have up their sleeve. Roadster is still a very big question mark whether they will ever make it. They have zero incentive to do so. And on the other hand they need to beat the Rimac Nevera on every metric without the thrusters to make good on their claim.

Definitely limited at 328. You can see the power output dropping when it only has to maintain that speed. The drop in acceleration is noticeable. As others have said, the car has been seen going up to 350 kmh and running out of space. I'm not sure mechanically it is a good idea to push the car all the way to its drag limited top speed given the speed of motors however.

@g.dubyou6263 Год назад
I think you could see something over 328, but it’s probably limited because the car only has one gear, so, you’re limited to by how fast the motors car spin. The motors are already carbon sleeved to keep the cooling down. If they can get the cooling better figured out, it can go faster, but, who needs to go 203 anyway? That’s not exactly slow.
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters Год назад
There is a hack that removes the limiter and gets up to 350-ish. So pure software limit
@g.dubyou6263
@g.dubyou6263 Год назад
@@StevenPeeters agreed. But, I think I’m trying to point out that the plaid motors already spin 23,500rpm at 200mph. You’re pushing the limit of the motor coming apart at anything higher. Maybe Tesla tested them to failure and 328 is the limit without running the risk of the motors coming apart at 330 or 340kmh. The last thing you want is for that motor to shell out and fling motor parts at 25,000rpm.
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters Год назад
@@g.dubyou6263 Fully agree. That is why I would never install such 3rd party hacks. Plus the fact that you only get the suspension firmware change if you get the official track pack. So, you would be paying a lot of money for that top speed unlock, but still got inadequate suspension for the track

Steven, I love your regular videos and your awesome work regarding Autopilot in Europe. But I really feel that you shouldn't have done a high speed run on public roads. It's dangerous enough on the 3-lane stretches, but going 300+ on a 2-lane section is just reckless. Nobody, even on a German Autobahn, has to expect somebody approaching from behind THAT fast! You cover so much distance in one second, maybe they even looked in the mirror and you were somewhere on the horizon. So they start to change lanes and bam! §1 of German road traffic regulations states: (1) Participation in road traffic requires constant caution and mutual (!) consideration. (2) Anyone who takes part in traffic must behave in such a way that no one else is harmed, endangered (!) or hindered or bothered more than is unavoidable under the circumstances So I'm gladly being the party pooper here, but the Autobahn is neither a race track nor a test track.
