Decided on a Tesla after my ID4 battery died and my car was bricked for over 4 months waiting for a fix. Never looked back and I’ve had my Tesla now for almost two years without a single issue.
@@NevoEVReviewIreland Just had a spin in a model 3 performance. Forget it. I'm sold. Never ever ever will I say electric cars are crap again, never. I want it and I want it now
@@Edvard.Munchkin I had bought the ID4 brand new around mid 2020, took delivery and was extremely happy with it, it’s a super well laid out car, great space and drives particularly well. One morning when the car was about 2 or 3 weeks old it just would not engage drive and a propulsion warning was displayed, battery was 60% full but it would not budge. The dealership proceeded to send out 4 different teams over the next week to try and get it moving without success until the dealership eventually relented and decided to call in a flatbed to recover the vehicle. It stood at the dealer for 4 months while they gave me a polo to drive. At the end of the 4th month I decided to have a meeting with the dealer and they agreed to refund me in full. I never found out what the fault was but couple of months later I met the sales person by chance and I was told they had to replace one of the cell packs. On my way out from the VW dealer meeting without planning or even considering a Tesla I drove past the Tesla showroom in Sandyford, they gave me the keys to try a model 3 and I was blown away, completely next level experience from purchasing to ownership. I love the ranger model as I don’t have time messing around with dealers and service staff and loan cars etc Tesla ranger came out to my work replaced a cabin filter check my tire pressures and off they go. Non of the old OEM thinking here and that alone will keep me buying the Tesla brand.
@@Bradtheone Disappointed to hear about your experience with the Volkswagen. I was always a Volkswagen man, I'm currently driving a diesel Passat but considering changing next year for a model 3 performance
HI Derek,.good review as always. Remember with the LFP battery you can charge to 100% all the time, so range is circa 400kms compared to 80% of LR, which realistically is around the same. Appreciate that if you charge to 100% on LR, that will probably give you around 480kms. I went for a RWD in the end as I couldn't justify the extra 7k for a LR for the couple of times a year I may do a long trip. Also the LFP battery degrades at a much slower rate and will not explode due to the chemistry. Thx Steve
You can charge all batteries to 100%, but its not recommended, neither for LFP. Thats a misunderstanding. The BMS needs 100% to ready the battery data and calculate range better. The battery does not like 100%. Degradation starts at 50% SoC for NCM and 70% for LFP. Above that the battery looses a few percent over years. You do not kill, but avoid high SOC if possible.
The real world tests that has been done points more towards 350km is a typical range to expect from the rwd version while the long range is about 100km extra fully charged.
Nice review. I pick up my long range this Friday. (Australia) It's been a year in the waiting. It will be a big improvement over our electric Kona whose driver assistance features I found very disappointing. I can't wait 😊😊😊
Makes a big difference, especially on those bumpy Dublin lanes. Looking at the current Model Y (RWD) starting at €42990 with 0% finance. Booked in for a test drive on Saturday March 2nd. Seems like great value. Do you think prices for the Model Y might go back up?@@NevoEVReviewIreland
Fairly well balanced review. Have my RWD Model Y a few months now. Came from a Q5. Two main issues. One which you didn’t cover is ultrasonic sensors. They don’t exist on new models. Hopefully Tesla Vision (distance using cameras) will improve (and rumours are it’s coming soon but it’s coming soon for a while now) but right now you cannot trust it. Seems like a big step back. Tesla messed this one up by removing hardware before software was ready. Wipers you mentioned and rumours are an update is weeks away but they simply have a mind of there own at times. In fairness they will get better with free over the air updates. Not everyone will care about sound quality but saying it’s just good underrates just how good it is. Air quality is also excellent. Range, I d say 400km is about right. Maybe even 385km. Still more than enough. I’ve yet to test in winter but from what I’ve read (and this is important) is that the heat pump works great. So range doesn’t drop off a cliff when you turn on the heat. Same can’t be said for my mates Q4 eTron. No issue with charging so far. Supercharger network is excellent and at the moment only available to Teslas in Ireland. That may change in time but likely not until we have more. Tons of extra space over Q5. Both storage and room for rear passengers. Overall very happy with the car. Software is excellent. Head and shoulders above anything else on the market.
Just bought this precise model, same colour in the UK from Tesla, new, unregistered and it cost me £40,500! That's even cheaper than the list price! Bought in June, took 5 days from clicking 'order' online to taking delivery - Tesla are clearly on a major expansion drive in the UK and it's working - Model Y was best selling car in June and is 4th YTD. A few weeks in I am very impressed, it has more or less everything you need - regardless of the drivetrain you choose, the specifications are the same across them all. Also worth noting that the RWD introduces a softer suspension set up - not massively different but definitely more suited to British and Irish roads which are pretty similar in their well known state of disrepair..... SO far I'm not struggling with the lack of CarPlay - using the 'messages' feature is a bit iffy - not great at dictation and quite confusing in terms of 'send/change' - it says "double tap to change" - when you double tap it just sends the message - I'm of an age where I believe when I'm out I am out - so basically, I don't feel the need to be jabbering to people in the car. The Navigation is pretty good (It's Google) easy to use, doesn't always take you on a route that you'd expect so it's not working exactly like Google Maps in standalone or smartphone form. Two things have disappointed - the Glass roof - it's lovely to have all that light, of course, but the glass is not effective enough in blocking heat coming into the car - we've had all sorts of cars, many with pano roofs but this is the only car that makes my Dogs start panting minutes into every drive - there is no in-built cover or retractable blind but it really, really needs it - even the Human Babies are occasionally squinting - you can get Tesla official or aftermarket blinds but they are are basically pop-up-tent style covers that you have to wedge into the roof with clips. It's a poor design overall - I'd have preferred a solid roof to be honest. Next: Autopilot - I got the basic version but that should still do lane keeping etc. it's piss poor - the lane keeping capability is pretty dreadful, it's inspires no confidence at all and is very sensitive - it constantly cancels itself either if it can't sense you holding the wheel or if you are holding the wheel too much - it's the worst system of any car I have owned in the last 5+ years with the same tech. I don't quite know why it's so bad? on a Motorway, for example, it just wanders in the lane, and adjusts itself quite harshly as if it really isn't sure until the last minute... Given Tesla's 'Tech' reputation, I find it hard to believe how poor this is compared to any VAG produce, China's MG products are worlds better, Subaru's ageing 'Eyesight' system is also infinitely better. It's not a dealbreaker unless you really do depend on this stuff, but the 'branding' of 'Autpilot/Enhanced Autopilot and 'Full Self Driving' are a bit of a con - don't waste your money. However, So far, glad I bought it but also glad I wasn't an early adopter since some friends bought early models which cost them about 20/25% more!!! I can't see them dropping prices much more because the Y is already better value than almost everything else - BEV or ICE. RWD isn't a compromise, it's still as quick as heck. Just go buy it now.
Expecting an update for auto-wiper performance next month, hopefully as good as the auto-high beams one was... which I guess is to say hopefully they'll finally perform as well as vehicles with sensors for it. The wiper speed controls ought appear under the visualisation any time the stalk button is pressed.
We just got the MY RWD here in Canada. That was the deal I needed to see. The right spec and price. Got mine 4 days ago. They say the Tesla Shanghai cars are the best quality and it's true. Flawless quality,. Better than any car I've ever seen. The '23 cars are supposed to have the new "Comfort Suspension ". I wonder because the U.S. made MY LR I tested rode softer. Maybe it's because we have no motor or drive unit in the front. I love this car. Selling all my other cars.😁
Model Y price is now so tempting. Still I would like drivers binacle and more buttons. Using screen seems distracting. Hope the fix to the wiper speeds/sensativity come soon as wipers do annoy me until i can set them to the speed i want on auto (3 levels of sensativity in i3) Space is excellent. Is it me or is the styling getting old. Y always looks strange to me ... like something is wrong above the shoulder line. My new glasses might help. Interested to see you had no comment on fit and finish. Tesla must be getting on top of it. They also seem to be better than some other makes for problems/off the road time. Great review Thanks. Des
Fit and finish top notch, those cars coming out of China seem to be sorted now. The design is probably going to be refreshed once the Model 3 update gets released
Good balanced review as ever. Nice looking car on the outside, However, No Binnacle, No HUD, No parking sensors, no buttons, no knobs, blank dashboard, not for everyone, lacks intuitive finger tip driver controls. Not comfy on R roads. No Apple Car Play. Only 8 CCS Super charger locations in Ireland (ie not really a USP). Derek you demonstrated well how distracting the menu is instead of physical driver controls. Interior looks like IKEA produced it, not keen on frameless door windows.
@@NevoEVReviewIreland Yea I get that, but the advantage of moving from car type to car type (eg partners car), and having all your data in your pocket gives great interoperability between cars especially for navigation and contacts, podcasts, etc.
@@djdestroyer Compatible interoperability moving from car to car, same navigation maps and saved waypoint data, history, same contacts list, same apps in my car or my wife's car, or son's car. No change, no proprietary nav, phone or contacts apps. In essence Car Play and Android Auto create seamless portability between cars.
I was surprised but the second you link your phone to the Tesla over Bluetooth, the whole contact list is dumped onto the car's software. Not missing Google Maps btw, and that's after 5 years using it. But I really get the point about being able to carry your car setup from one car to another in a hot swap way.
Great review as always Derek. I have about 31K miles on a Model Y LR, so far, great car. Agree, that the LR is probably a better value than the rear-wheel drive. Initially I thought I would miss the apple car play connectivity, but the Tesla software/mapping is excellent, and I have not missed Apple Car play. The autonomous features and FSD have improved considerably and are quite good. I agree the suspension is a bit stiff but you get used to it quickly.
@@NevoEVReviewIreland 🤣🤣🤣🤣 , down in Mayo myself , had to go to Dublin one of the days , my model 3 LR returned 7.3 km per Wh , drove as normal 120++ where I could and ac blowing .
For that money the car seems almost reasonable when you consider the tech and practicality it has. I know I wouldn't like all the controls though the tablet though but I'm guessing one would adjust to it without too much difficulty? Also, being from Cork I just know the voice control element would struggle...
Thanks for the comment. The value is definitely there. New Cork showroom opening very soon. Take one for a test drive (book through Nevo.ie please 🙏) and give the voice control a go!
Will the 18" wheels have enough room for the calipers and disks? I take that the range would improve and so would the ride quality. But I doubt it will reach 15%, more like 3 to 5%?
Did a test drive of this model and the 3 side by side. roomier no doubt but sluggish compared to the m3 and pretty lame brakes. the woody panel alone turned me off, even though I really liked the clean no botton console. waiting for project juniper to finally get rid of my diesel.
Not going for a Tesla only because of the lack of mechanical buttons and knobs. Touchscreens force you to takes eyes off driving, and are worthless on a bumpy road, which Ireland has a lot of.
It's where things are headed Steve with all car makers and it's really not all bad. In a car with a large, competent touch screen like a Tesla, you'll get used to it pretty quickly.
@@pato10111 I got the Kia Soul EV because of its knobs and buttons for _most_ things. Can't get used its touchscreen on a bumpy road after 3 years. Drove a loaner Niro for the last 2 months and it has only touchscreen controls, not usable on these roads. Plus, the narrow country road to my house is like a roller coaster. Blind hills, have to pull over to let an oncoming car past. Take your eyes off the brow of the hill for a second and your dead.
In my experience most of the settings that are annoying to change via touchscreen are "set and forget". Seat and wheel position, mirrors etc you do it once and then never again, auto adjust to driver profile if you have multiple drivers, climate control goes on auto and then most other stuff works well with voice control. In my experience it isn't an issue at all but if course YMMV
Patmanrick, that's my experience exactly. Plus there are enough customizable shortcuts that you can make most functions more accessible to your liking. Regarding rough roads, you quickly learn that you can grab the frame of the screen with a few fingers while tapping the screen with your thumb for much better accuracy, in a way that's probably more difficult in cars without a "floating" screen.
@@kineticarl what I find with the touchscreen is that all of the controls you need to access quickly are on the home screen so it's exactly the same as having a knob or button in that location. Even without voice control it all works pretty seamlessly.
Safest car ,5 star rating in EU ,Australia and USA, guy in California drove one off a 300 foot cliff, he his partner and their 2 kids were released from hospital that day
Maybe mention the difference between the LFP battery in the RWD model and the other model Y's. You can charge it daily to 100% which you shouldn't do on a normal model Y
@@adriancarey7848 Yes will appeal to an eclectic group of supporters but mainstream pickup truck folks more likely to go for the Ford. Who wants to drive around in a stainless steel kitchen sink that looks like it was designed by Lego?
