Tesla repays San Jose pie shop owner after last-minute cancellation 

This pie business should have a liner in their order policy like: Pies ordered cannot be cancelled as they are perishables. And request 50% deposit to be paid for orders of 30 pies and more.

To be fair, I do agree, bailing on an order this large is despicable. But what the MSM is leaving out, is the fact that Tesla hired a third party vendor, Flavor City, whom goes directly to small local food businesses/pop-ups/restaurants, etc. They are the ones who actually failed to do sound business. Either way, Elon cleaned it up. Kudos to both Tesla and The Giving Cafe.

Cheapest "oops" for Tesla to fix, and even if she didn't get the $2k, I don't think she could have gotten this much positive advertising and PR if she paid a firm $20,000 👍

Did I hear $2,000 dollars - how embarrassing. Any Manager would have immediately paid the $2,000 dollars if any employee made a commitment - even if it was an error. The reputation of the business is more valuable that a few thousand dollars. Elon will be having some serious conversations with that Department!

Its wild that Tesla tried to blame the 1st employee and say they didnt have authority to make such an order for an event, but then another different employee who did apparently have authority went and doubled the initial order after the fact only to cancel it later. They have a lot of miscommunication going on

When I first heard about this, I thought: "Elon Musk - what a no-good SOB". But then someone on the inside told me that he called the person associated with this transaction and told them in no uncertain terms that this kind of thing would not be tolerated. Kudos to Musk for not publicly blasting this employee. He has bigger fish to fry than worrying about a low-level event manager who canceled an order of apple pies.

I mean, I'm sure they would be happy for big orders, but they also need to operate their regular business too, and she said they turned away other business the first time, in order to take Tesla's order. First, what a sweet lady. Second, major props to San Jose residents. Third, just to give them due credit, good job Tesla and Elon Musk for reimbursing the costs without much fanfare. Fourth, as soon as the Tesla decided to cancel, they should've realized that they threw the bakery under the bus. A screenshot of the text Ms. Rasetarinera got showed that it was basically just "sorry, thanks anyway" without any hint that Tesla will reimburse. Had she not made the social media post, the community wouldn't have rallied behind them. Now it just looks like Tesla got checkmated instead of taking leadership on making good their error.

Unless there were specific terms stating otherwise, would Tesla or the catering company not be liable under contract? Though I suppose there is trouble in the form of finding the time and money to actually sue.

How much did she ask for deposit before purchasing the ingredients for such a large order? Last minute cancellation does happen. Next time please ask more deposit. Glad everything works out well.

Next time they want to work with her she should ask for a deposit that covers the cost of ingredients. If they’re not willing to cover it then move on to another company that hasn’t cost you stress.

If this was any other company but Tesla it wouldn’t even make local news.

2k maybe pocket change but in a scenario if they didn’t owe back she have the right to sue them since what they did is pretty much impeding/endangering a business regardless if big or small. She could win the case with proof of the order dates, quantity and transactions owed with response from the staff on cancellation at last notice.

Tesla didn't pay because it was the right thing to do, but because the bad PR was embarrassing to them.

I'm a biz owner but I'm confused. She takes a $16K order with no PO or down payment. OK. She buys the stuff for 4000 pies. Tesla cancels the order. People line up to buy pies and she has so many orders to fill she closes Monday. So, how is she out $2K for ingredients if she had lines and she had so many orders? Too many unanswered questions.

Prepay for all order over $75, you could almost say the solution to this problem, is as easy as pie.

Tesla paid for the cost of the order, but she turned away other orders. She is still out of any profit. It's great that the community helped out.
