Tesla's 0-60 Times Are Misleading

The performance gap with different Teslas is not as big as it seems.
Tesla doesn't hit 60 in under two seconds - • No, Tesla Can't Hit 60...
Subscribe to Engineering Explained for more videos! - goo.gl/VZstk7
Elon Musk wouldn’t try to deceive you, would he? Well unfortunately Tesla 0-60 times are a bit misleading. For example, Tesla shows a 0-60 in 1.99 seconds on their website for the Model S Plaid, or 3.1 seconds if you opt for the dual motor AWD Model S. But if you click “feature details” a box pops up, informing you that the Plaid’s time is with the first foot of rollout subtracted. But the standard S doesn’t apply this practice. So in reality, the Plaid’s true 0-60 is greater than 1.99 seconds, and the gap in performance between the two Model S’s is not as wide as it seems. And this is true for Tesla’s other Performance models as well. They use different 0-60 methods for different models, altering your perception of the gap in performance.

If you're thinking *"every car maker does this"* I challenge you to find any other car maker, which on the order page shows different 0-60 times for different trims, with no asterisks, yet using different methodologies, and thus widening the true performance gap. I've never seen it anywhere else. For the full explanation, check out this video (linked on screen) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i7yigpPSu_o.html

its not about that. tesla was including rollout on the slow model and subtracting it on the fast model, to make it seem like there was a larger performance gap than there really is. ofc i think it would be great if everyone used the same metric, but its just intentionally misleading to use different metrics on different trims to make one seem better than it is

@@PlazmaBooy 60 is the most commonly used highway speed limit in the USA. Doesn’t matter where it comes from anyway, it’s the metric that is used. Also I watch a decent number of British car RU-vidrs and I’ve never once heard them say 0-62. Only 0-60

That’s not what the issue is here.. it’s the mixing of data using two different methods that’s deceptive. FWIW independent testing of the ScatPack (Motortrend for example) has done 4.0 to 4.3 0-60 in various tests. The 1320 will do it in the 3s.

The numbers are inaccurate because they use a laser to determine when the car has started down the drag strip during testing. The put it on the tire and the cars already moving before the laser moves off the tire. It’s basically like doing a 5-60 which makes a huge difference rather than doing it from a dead stop. Tons of videos explaining this…. The Red eye also doesn’t have a 1.66 second 0-60. Tons of 0-60 times are incorrectly measured.

@@hhhhj5831 i suppose that was confusingly worded. What I meant was that it is often brought up that technically nobody needs a car in the first place. There are other ways to address the problem of how to get from point A to point B, but cars are way more convenient in most cases. Now when we're talking about any sort of fast or luxury cars, need isn't even a consideration, it's 100% about what the driver wants. My point was that it's irrelevant to discuss needs when talking about these kinds of vehicles.

They really wanted to get that sub-2s 0-60 time as selling point for the Plaid I guess. It is incredibly misleading since even though it's just a foot it means that the car isnt gaining enough traction from standstill to actually move and accelerate towards 60mph. It's a really misleading number that can shave off more than a couple hundredths of a second. Also, regardless of loss of traction, that 1ft gain from standstill is the gonna be longest time the car takes to travel 1ft since it's still at its slowest. Wouldn't be misleading at all as a measurement test but to compare it with the non-subtracted number there's gonna be some noticeable gains.

Right, and we’re going to ignore the 1.98 second clocked irl for the plaid. Because the website saying 1.99 seconds means it’s always 1.99 seconds regardless of heat, tire size, tire warmth, ground traction, wind resistance. Etc. I get we all hate Tesla but this vid is bs. At least if you complain about the body gaps you’re pointing out an actual flaw.
