First, all of the videos in the series are phenomenal. They are each very informative and very interesting. I was wondering if you could explain what you mean when you say, “they join the positive and the negative terminals on the same end of the cell, rather than on opposing ends” . Again, great series/channel overall.
@EVTechExplained
@EVTechExplained 6 лет назад
Thanks! Yes, the entire can of the cell is actually the negative terminal, and only the small tab at the positive end forms the positive terminal. As a result, the top shoulder is actually still part of the negative terminal thus you can connect both the positive and negative terminals with exposure only the The positive side of the cell. Wording this without an image is challenging. I'll try and find a link to show an image.

There are two versions of the S and X battery pack. The newer version, which has a set of two thinner coolant tubes, provides more space per-module for batteries and gives Tesla the ability to provide the 100kWh capacity.

Thanks for awesome video I have one question how they have connected BMS, 6s means they have made connections to only end of the connecting strip, if we use Orion bms do we need to connect each cell individually or connecting stip end connection is suffice purpose.

@codygocam
@codygocam 6 лет назад
No, the 85 and 90 have always had 16 modules. 7 on each side and 2 in front. They improved the chemistry on the cells to gain the 5kwh and then used the more compact twin cooling system to create the 100 pack with more cells.

two very important questions: 1)management of failed batteries in the module, generally I find proper bms is most important topic in Li batteries family, and I am always looking for other people opinion on this subject as I don't find myself still comfortable in this topic. 2) fire resistance of tesla module especially comparing to the standard multi-pouch packages found in other EVs.

Good video. A question. The cells that are at the output end of the cooling tube, would on an average get lesser cooling, as compared to those on the near end, when the coolant is just entering and hence colder. Will this not lead imbalance in cells within the module over long term? Is there a way to take care of this which Tesla has figured out ?
@EVTechExplained
@EVTechExplained 6 лет назад
This will lead to an imbalance. Their are multiple techniques to resolve this, such as tuning the flow rate around the module, however these do add extra cost and it does not appear that Tesla have implemented these techniques.

A BMS can be used on a pack of any size, however you would really want to be balancing each series string, meaning balancing will occur at cell voltages (

There is a mistake at 0:40 - "First generation battery packs 85 an 90 kWh consisted of 15 modules". That's wrong. It was 16 modules: 16s 6s74p. 3:19 - Powerpack/Powerwall *Version 1* shared the 18650 cells. Only Powerpack/Powerwall *Version 2* contains the 21700 cells of NMC type. 6:29 - The stated 2.5V minimum voltage is a very low discharge voltage. Typically, this is rather 2,8-3 Volts to reduce degradation.

What’s this batteries operation temperature? And on winter time the batteries temperature goes down when the car standing on driveway or the bms maintaining the batteries temperature even when the car not in use?
@moestrei
@moestrei 3 года назад
There is a resistive 3kW battery coolant heater and the car will use energy from the pack to heat the pack when its temperature drops below 12 C. In operation it is around 30-40 C maintained by the speed of the 2 battery fluid pumps. From 47 C the battery gets actively cooled by the air conditioner system with the battery being priotized over the cabin.

What doesn't make sense to me is the refrigerant is applied at the beginning of the module which leaves those batteries at the end of the module with no thermal gradient to deposit their heat. There's probably a better design out there.
@EVTechExplained
@EVTechExplained 6 лет назад
There most certainly is a better way. The challenge is doing so without increasing cost and manufacturing complexity in a meaningful way.
@steveclunn8165

@@EVTechExplained and another question would be is it really necessary at all. Might be more case of needing to heat the batteries in very cold weather. Nissan Leaf batteries are not cooled and the stress there under is considerable compared to Tesla as they are 60 amp hours compared to Tesla's 200 a h. This can also be seen in the range a leaf with its 75-mile range is putting a lot of more stress than a car with a 300 mile range. I'm not saying I know for sure just what I see. I was hoping to see what the peak amperage I could be pulled from this pack and how low they let the voltage sag under the extreme load?

Can you explain the reasonS why a Tesla battery might catch on fire? I have seen on the internet different Tesla models catch on fire when: 1. just being parked. 2. parked and plugged in for charging. 3. driving down the road. 4. and after a crash. Let's assume a 2022 model 3, hits a dip and the bottom of the car hits the roadway, the car crashes by striking a 8 inch curb, the car hit a tree too, 3 minutes later it explodes into a ball of fire. Q1: can i hire you to help me develop theories of 'why' the 2170 design had some faults and why they catch on fire. Q2: does the 4680 battery fix any problems with the 2170 catching fire?

You would have to start cutting and re-arranging the bus bars....
@paulrhodes7696
@paulrhodes7696 6 лет назад
Presumably soldering an insulated wire to the middle of the battery module would give you two separate 12v power-supplies, (12v between the soldered wire and the positive terminal, and another between the wire and the negative). So when looking at the video at 4min21s, the wire would be soldered anywhere on the bus-bar at the extreem RHS of the "bottom view". No cutting of the bus bars would be necessary, but each 12v supply would have to be used independently, eg on two separate electric motors in each wheel of a bicycle perhaps.
@steveclunn8165
@steveclunn8165 5 лет назад
@@paulrhodes7696 the bus bar that they use to connect all these cells together does not lend itself to the soldering. But there's plenty of space to put a screw in between the cells and screw it terminal right to the bus bar. The little wires from each cell that are connected to the giant bus bar are all welded. Click on my profile picture and look through my video collection to see how I did this

74 cells in parallel: you know its impossible to distinguish between these cells whilst they are connected in parallel.........therefore there is NO cell level monitoring in any ev's battery pack. Sad but true.........when will this be solved? Look at it this way: 6S 74P pack.....thats 444 cells 74 cells in parallel are basically monitored as a single cell ( cannot distinguish between cells): so 74 out of 444 cells are monitored or 17% of the pack. The reality is less than 20% of a packs cells are being monitored is one way of looking at it. It very rarely this point is raised as a weakness in the electric vehicles, in fact its very rarely raised at all, most people continue to say that there is monitoring at an individual cell level.....which is not the case.
