Tesla's Pedestrian Warning System. How to Temporarily Disable It...

My AWD Tesla Model 3 came with the Pedestrian Warning System that was mandated by the NHTSA for electric vehicles. Currently it is obnoxiously loud and I do not want it active on my car. So we look at ways to muffle the sound and even go as far as disconnecting the speaker. If you go this route, definitely buy an isolation kit (Only $9.99) to ensure that the speaker and wires going to it are safely capped. Otherwise dirt and water could get into them causing issues. Easily reversible for when Tesla allows users to select from sounds and hopefully adjust the sound level.

Would you still hate it, if an accident could have been avoided through the sound emitting a warning ?? My Kona E has an Om sound between 1-23kph and on two occasions it’s done the job, warning people when they were just about to step in front of the car.

@@victorseal9047 that's what a horn is for. What if they had headphone on and could not hear your KIA? Come on people need to look before stepping in the street and you as a driver should always be alert and ready to step on break, and use your horn if needed or flash your lights if needed. ☺

K Lee Agreed. But there are a million variables. The driver checking the opposite direction in a car park full of people ( as I was ), or being distracted by something else, etc. Any and everything that adds to safety in our increasingly busy world, should be first looked at positively. If a good number of owners complain that it’s too loud, I’m sure Tesla will sort it.

@@victorseal9047 even in a busy parking lot, a noisemaker doesn't do jack shit. People walking aren't using their ears, they are using their sight. Just keep in mind that you will also disable the boom box feature, as the sound also goes through that speaker. For me that is not an issue as the music sent through there is of very bad fidelity, and sending fart, goat and other noises outside is not within my personality or need. So trading these for a quiet car is more than worth it. Can you imagine a world with ALL cars having this feature? It would be worse than the sounds coming from ICE cars now. Solution for such an innovative company like Tesla: put together a motion-sensing device that could then, and only then, give a sound-based clue about approaching people at certain speeds. Pack it all together, and it could act as a kind of flashlight that blind people could use to avoid hybrids and EVs. It's all commercial, off-the-shelf stuff, it just needs to be put together.

Some thoughts re voice & environmental noise levels: 1. Outside noise levels will often be significantly louder than what was measured in your garage (think traffic noise, sirens, parking lot related store noises, music, talking...). 2. Conversational speech alone ranges from 65-80 decibels in loudness. When you were talking, your sound level meter was showing 74-80+ dB's in loudness. In light of the above everyday environmental & speech related noise levels, car warning sounds meant to alert pedestrians that a nearby car is moving likely will need to be 65-75 decibels in loudness in order to be easily heard. Had someone been talking & walking by your backing up car only putting out 50-55 dB's of sound warning, they might not have heard it. This would even be more of a problem for those with a hearing loss, and/or visually impaired. I agree the Tesla slow speed/backup alert noise is very unpleasant. But, if my backing up Model 3 hit someone because they couldn't hear my car, I couldn't forgive myself. Thanks

So you wouldn't be using your eyes and backup camera and think there's a possibility you could just inadvertently back into a pedestrian one day? Seriously?

Lol, what, do you think it be some kind of consolation if they _could_ hear your car before you hit them? This is how stupid, wasteful, ineffectual laws get passed. You are responsible for not hitting pedestrians. The noise maker thing is moot point.

I agree. Although it will be fun when they come out with different sounds and voices you can activate. Sadly in that case, my model 3 is pre-pedestrian speaker. However, when they made these disable caps, why did they not make just a coupling that went between the plug and socket that makes it look like they are connected, but it does not allow the contact to go through that coupling. If someone checked the car, or on a visual only inspection it would not be obvious that you disabled it if they looked at the cabling.

Just and FYI: I have a Model 3(pre-warning system) but my wife has a RAV4 Hybrid 2019 that has the same issue. We were told by Toyota to measure the resistance across the speaker (Ohm's) and put a resistor in across the wire going back to the car so the system would not know it was removed it from the speaker, and possibly setting off the check engine light. Apparently Tesla does not check that its disabled currently but one day they might.

I’ve had more people step out in front of my 2015 Nissan Leaf with noise maker in parking lots than have stepped in front of my 2019 Model 3 without noise maker in parking lots. People don’t pay attention so having a sound generated from the car is going to make little to no difference. I’ve watched people step in front of large noisy diesel trucks just as much as silent electric cars. If this was really an issue, there would be news articles everywhere about pedestrians being hit by their silent hunters, but I have yet to read a single article claiming injury because of EVs hitting unsuspecting pedestrians.

But can't help wondering if by deliberately disabling the noise maker if it leaves drivers vulnerable to litigation in the event of an accident, particularly one involving actually bodily harm; again, particularly with the USA in mind. Also might this point come into play where in most jurisdictions worldwide, the onus is legally placed on the owner/driver to ensure the vehicle is in full working/road worthy order. If every EV in a busy city center or parking lot is making noise, it could actually mask the noises form other nearby vehicles and cause noise confusion to both blind and normal sighted individuals. There are better ways to implement safety for pedestrians. If they're going to require a hardware addition to vehicles, why not require an internal speaker with a radio receiver. Now blind people (or other cautious pedestrians/cyclists) can optionally carry transmitters that warn nearby drivers that a pedestrian is nearby. It could also be used to alert for other hazards like construction crews, deer crossings, bad road conditions, upcoming red light, etc.

My LR AWD doesn’t have it. I got mine in June 2019 in the Netherlands. Do you think in the near future an OTA update will activate the sound ? I checked my car and the hardware is there.... .
@Raaaphael

Do you have the speaker holes underneath the front bumper ? If yes they can enable it with a OTA update when it becomes mandatory in Europe.

And it is already mandatory for EV’s in the Netherlands to produce a sound when driving slow or in reverse. My former EV, a Hyundai IONIQ EV had the VSS on board. (VSS = Virtual Sound Simulator). So i think my M3 will make noises after one the coming updates...... Let’s hope there will be a choice in sounds.

Thanks for the video. Is there data showing increased pedestrian accidents caused by silent EV's or is this left over noise from the ICE age? One goal auto manufacturers was to make quieter efficient cars. We have that with EV's but now can you imagine the noise db's coming off the road when we're all stuck in traffic?

Research commissioned by The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (Guide Dogs) in the UK found that electric vehicles are 40% more likely to collide with pedestrians than their internal combustion counterparts.

When was this added to the model 3? I bought mine in December of 2018. I don't think I have the speaker. Now, I have to go and check. I hope I don't. Thanks for the video.

It was added to cars starting September 1st 2019. So you won't have it. 👍

One more question: do you get any errors after unplugging the speaker? Does the System notice?

The car does not notice that the speaker is disconnected. This solution works as advertised. Did it on my MYP.

60-70 decibels is where normal conversation sits. I don’t feel like that is too loud. I will agree that that forward sounds is bad and needs to be something better than a box fan recording. Reverse is ok. I wouldn’t unplug the speaker myself.

It is much louder than modern ICE cars so it is too loud. Very annoying to hear the neighbors with 3's coming home or leaving from inside our house but not the ones with ICE cars.

If I got a model 3, this would be the first mod I would perform. I'd be embarrassed driving my 65,000$ EV with that noise. My previous car (VW GTI) was very quiet inside and out at low speeds. Much more silent than those silly fake noises.
