Tesla Spare Tire Required?

Wasn't sure if I needed a spare tire for my Model Y until I had a blowout and couldn't find the right size tire within 240 miles. This is my review of the Modern Spare and reasons for getting one. Hope I don't ever need it but you never know and it is better to be prepared for the worst.

Great video. Also own the Modern Spare and it's saved us a few times. Worth the peace of mind to get you out of a pickle!

Already bought a Modern Spare and a set of 4 jack pucks. Good insurance that I hope I never need. I also keep a rechargeable Fanttik tire inflator in the center console. My monthly routine is to check the tire pressure on the 5 tires, and check that the battery on the inflator is fully charged. I have a 4-way lug wrench from my days driving an ICE car for 35+ years. Modern Spare's J-lug wrench doesn't offer the torque of a 4-way. So I carry both.

Sounds like you are prepared as much as you can be. Flats happen.

Great info once again 👍🏼👍🏼 … We just finished up a 6678 miles, 13 states on a semi-random trip across America, with some major random stops 🇺🇸 Put a set of new tires on the MY, bought a can of “Fix-a-Flat and prayed. 😳😂 No flats, all good. 🤞🏼

Excellent video. Just purchased a new Modern Spare tire kit off of Craigslist San Francisco for 250 bucks. Did a test fit on our 2021 Tesla Model 3. It was a great price, and it works just great. Our rubber pad did not sag like yours; you might want to purchase a different brand. We will only carry this spare tire for long drives to LA or Vegas etc.

Excellent information and video. Thanks for doing these Ron. I have another tip for your viewers. If you own (as I do), a performance Y, you’re going to find that you go through rear tires far too quickly, and that their availability is limited. Most times, they have to be ordered, taking days if you’re fortunate. I had the good sense to keep one of my 2 used rear tires when the guys changed them out instead of giving them both back for recycling. It really saved my bacon as I had a major blow-out soon after getting a new rear set and would have been without my car had I not had the extra used tire in the garage for just such an emergency. And speaking of emergencies, I too have all the plugs, air kits, etc for my car but did take the plunge a while back and bought the Modern Spare. I drive the road to Vegas from L.A., and I know AAA will come to rescue me as far as changing goes, I just need to have something for them to put back on in case they do. I will put mine where you do in the back seat as the cover makes that very easy to do. Thanks again and safe driving to all!

I have a set of winter wheels. I just take one of then when I travel. I also bought the jack from modern spare. Yah, the wheels are really bulky. I have tire kit, if it's only a minor puncture it will do the trick.

This was helpful, Ron. I’m really surprised they made a kit that didn’t take into account the jack pads, or at least shape the top of the jack to fit specifically to the Tesla bottom panel.

Yes, probably to weakest point on the system.

Live in NJ. Not exactly the boondocks. Just got my first set of new tires for my M3LR. Saving one of my original tires for a spare for the few times that I will travel long distance. Will never attempt to change it myself. I think it makes sense.

Thanks Grandpa Ron! Good advice and I have ordered one. Sketchy roads even around Chicago which I go to all the time. From Grandpa Dan😅

ABC- always buy a cheap/craigslis/ spare tire BEFORE you have a flat... $200 today can save you $750 tomorrow. (Been there, not fun)

I suspect most people don't think about it until it is too late.

It seems like the heavy vehicle weight (battery) would make quick work of an emergency tire, this a significant problem with EVs, less reliability.

I’m sure everyone has their own experiences but my Tesla has been very reliable. The spare tire is a temporary one like the ones that come with most new cars these days. I have driven on it and it was fine. It’s meant to get you out of a pinch until you can replace the regular tire.

Does this kit come with a puck (I think you call it a jack pad)? Or did you need to use your own? It wasn't clear to me after watching the video.
@grandparonstesla5141
@grandparonstesla5141 2 года назад
I had my own, but it didn't work very well. Better to just use the jack. It has a rubber top but has to be manually centered.

Us old farts remember when tires were not so reliable. We were in the habit of changing them, took about 10 min. To us it seems nuts to wait hours for a tow.

Thanks for doing this review. I currently just have the Tesla air pump/foam kit which will work in some cases but not a major flat. Will pick one up for those "boonies" drives. I suppose does not fit in the frunk?

Found out the hard way got flat and was surprised didn't have spare on the Leaf..then checked my Ariya also didnt have spare..so had to buy 2 spares tires but rather have them especially since i travel a lot and getting stranded in Arizona 120° even few minutes its not fun. Rather chnage tire myself than waiting hours for roadsides assistance

Yes i agree. If you only drive in the city then spare is not needed. Otherwise it can be a life saver.
