Time for an update on the Ferrari Testarossa to Teslarossa project.
In this episode we cover the basic layout of the electric conversion kit, including the battery boxes and motor cradle. We also talk about the wiring and some of the over components so far installed including the A/C.

One day we will have batteries so efficient that just replacing where the fuel tank was will get you more than enough mileage. Nostalgia of the future! Good thing about your ocnversions, is that when that future comes, it will be as easy as replacing the outdated battery modules with the latest tecnology ones. A classic EV car is a car forever, never gets outdated, can always be improved.

@@alanmay7929 Actually that's not necessarily true. As long as the nominal voltage of the new battery pack is close enough the existing charger/inverter/etc would still be ok. The real work of battery chemistry accommodation is done by the BMS (battery managment system) which is generally integrated into the pack. Using an older charger would likely limit your charging speed though.

Hi , great ideas and work going on , once years ago I saw the wiring boards for concord , and years later met an aircraft electrical chap trying to wire a house on a building site , with the same ideas , big joint boxes . Amazing ideas you have .🤔👍👍

Excellent video ! This is what I call "sensible recycling", instead of burying the Testarossa in some dark corner, it'll be again a fun car with much easier maintenance compared to the original.

W hen I used to work for Dormobile we used to use peg board and golf tee's on our wiring table which meant you just changed the tee's if you were making a different loom so you only needed one table.

These guys build a loom board for each different car they convert and keep the board. That way they can make another one exactly the same later in when they want to. It's simple but brilliant. The peg board is a good idea too.

The harness/component build board is great. For a Fiat 850 Spyder, we mapped out its harness on plywood, marked with tack nails, and made a new one - albeit a very simple project compared to yours. For my 16 year old self, it was fun. I can’t wait to see this car tear up the tarmac! Keep up the great work!

I'm super impressed as I wrongly assumed that all the control units, wiring etc were off the shelf jobbies taken from a Tesla for example which all plugged together. Enlightenment that it's all bespoke to each car and a lot more complex! Well done again guys and look forward to the next video!

Been looking forward to seeing the next installment of the TeslaRossa build. Good move to split that front battery box. Not only do you gain room in the boot, you also use space - where the fuel tanks were - that would be difficult to use for anything else. You've lowered the CoG and improved the spread of weight as you say , too, which will benefit the handling.

I see modules are still huge. I hope one day they will be slimmer and smaller and more dense, so you could fill more available shallow space inside the car with batteries if needed. Also I see the wiring is pretty complex. I hope your end users will get all the documentation like wiring diagrams etc. Assuming these cars can be later sold and shipped anywhere in the world, the support should be in place to help customers keep their converted classics on the road. Great job so far! I subscribed and will watch the progress on this Testarossa.

Love these comments. Electric cars will be the dinosaurs when the already short supply of lithium and cobalt runs out and hydrogen power replaces unsustainable heavy battery technology. Battery powered cars are not new, been around for a hundred years or more. Thomas Edison and an electric car in 1913.

@@BombSponge Where does the hydrogen come from? Currently 99% of it comes from fossil fuels and causes 2% of global emissions so if you tried to power all cars from hydrogen the emissions would be off the scale. Not to mention the cost as hydrogen is currently heavily subsidised. Hydrogen is a lie put out by oil companies and one or two car companies who can't make a profit building EV's.

What an ineresting episode this was. We forget how compicated wiring looms are, so the work the lads have done with the low-voltage box and connections is really impressive. I had a question about the battery boxes etc. They are all fabricated out of steel? Is there a reason for this - just for strength, protection etc? I was wondering about weight - you can buy off-the-shelf electrical junction boxes made of ABS, etc, that would be easier to machine and attach cable glands. Farnell, RS components etc...Keep up the great videos, we love it!

If the conversion is weight critical we make the boxes out of aluminium. The standard HV junction boxes available never are quite the right shape or have the gland blanks in the right place, it's more work to mod them than it is to fab up a new one that is the correct shape to fit in the available space. 👍

Nah that works on the rivian cause the vehicle height is ok. On the teslarossa it would be below your knees. Plus the guys who can pay for the car and the conversion, it's a show piece cafe car. They ain't going on trips with luggage

It’s ending up with more luggage space then it had pre conversion. If some Q from MI5 got a hold of it though, it’s a perfect space for the smoke screen generators and caltrops holders to go for the James Bond upgrade.

As I like to be thorough and even add to a case as items arise, we should not forget a Ferarri's ABYSMAL Fuel Consumption and it's incredible COST. When that Clown Clarkson & Co took one round the Track and drove it as it is MADE to be driven, it returned 7 MPG*. Even my 10 Ton RV returned a frugal EIGHT MPG, and it had a TOILET !! Over a year with depreciation* and speeding tickets* that equates with the cost of YOUR HOUSE. So a Spark Job Conversion is a Win X 9 ! (You will still get those pesky tickets.) .

A great deal of the value in a Ferarri is in its engine and transmission. That gets put on the shelf in a project like this. For a bunch of money, I suppose it can be returned to the original. BUT, once one has driven your take--the TESLA-rossa, few may want to turn back the clock!

awesome work! What is the estimated weight distribution now? Is there any scope for making the sensors wireless? You'd still have to power them but that's the way everything else is going so I imagine they will be in the future?

A COMPLETELY overlooked fact is how EXPENSIVE, COMPLICATED and OFTEN a Ferarri Engine is to maintain. Add to this a Seriously bad Fuel Consumption, inconvenience in refilling, and having to mix with the Commoners at the Fuel Station. All in all, Swapping a Ferarri Engine for an Electric job is a Win-Win-Win-Win_Win-Win situation. .

Great explanation Richard. How is the race car coming along. Now end of October and only 8 months til pikes Peak. 25 June And the car needs to get there and that means needs to be in a container and on a boat by end May and customs cleared and at Pikes by Mid June.

Nice battery boxes but how do you seal them and also how do you ensure they are safe? With only one or two boxes it is relatively simple using contactors and fuses but not so easy with four boxes.

Have you considered using one of the "new" (or at least recently more affordable for a mere mortal) PDMs to simplify the wiring harness? I'd guess the relays are less efficient than solid state switches which would be a disadvantage in an EV.

Fantastic work. I am starting a Delorean conversion myself , and these videos are an invaluable help. On question I keep having though: ECC never talks/shows/explains the battery cooling side of the problem. I have seen fittings on the cooling plates of the CALB batteries, so I assume ECC is cooling the batteries?

Hi, interested in the Calb modules you're now using. I seem to remember you were using Tesla modules earlier. Are the Calb modules used in any mass produced cars or are they off-the-shelf? Also, are these LiFePO4 and, if so, what are the pros and cons? Thanks.

We only use Tesla modules in about 40% of our builds, the rest use CALB or LG Chem modules. 👍

I love the new battery distribution but are there any concerns about the front battery position in the crumple zone in case of a crash? Has anyone considered a fire retarding system built into the chassis in the region of the battery boxes?

Where do you get those modules from? We reconvert Mercedes batteries to Nissan leaf to add more power and autonomy and I'm curious of more modules to experience with. Will be working with CATL modules soon too

If I may add another question: energy density of batteries (weight). In one of the episodes 'petrol versus batteries) you explain that the energy density of the Tesla is up to 0,22 kWh/kg. I assume this is for the pack including the cooling provisions. How do the CALB batteries score on this ranking (including the cooling plates)?

How to get things done right :p I have a question, however: with BYD and CATL going Blade and Qilin respectively, not to mention Tesla (which basically means structural batteries), aren't you afraid that battery manufacturers will at some point stop selling battery modules as they currently do? Or do you already have a plan for this?
