I’m not a welder but I’m very impressed with your wisdom. I’m 66 and have been knife forging for about a year. I need to learn mig welding which I’m trying to learn. But see a real welder is so impressive. It’s you guys that have made this country where it is today.
@Solorivera
@Solorivera Год назад
I’ve been welding mig for 15 years. It is by far the easiest welding method to learn. After making sure Argon bottle is full, regulator set, Amps and Voltage are correct. (TIP:keep wire speed slightly higher than voltage.25/20) I’d suggest not working your puddle. Start with dragging your wire at a consistent pace, not too fast..slow it down, it’s ok. Have your Nozzle 1/4”-1/8” away from work surface. You should come out with a smooth clean bead

I've been working in a welding lab in south Louisiana for the last 6 years, and you've given a lot of good advice! A couple points to emphasize... -5:58 I cannot tell you how true this is... I've busted at least a dozen guys who claim to have welded for over 20 years without busting a test. -Listen to what the inspector asks! Sometimes there's special requirements we have to enforce depending on the customer/code. At our place, you get one shot to fix the root as long as it's a reasonable area to repair. Not every place allows stuff like that. -RELAX. It's just a weld. If you get too nervous, you get stressed out, and you don't perform. It's just like the welds you make in the shop. Relax, take your time and weld it up. Good stuff man!

I get migraines, get nausea and vomit daily. It took a yr before I got up and said ima learn to weld before I die! I bought a welder, all my gear and tank, and I've been (trying to) weld for about a week now lol. I'm horrible, but it's fun! Im learning Tig first, cuz it's hardest, but I learn a lot from you bruh. @@ASAPJermz Thank You! I've been burning away and practicing every day. I'm the type that wants to build most of my tools vs buy them, so I made a heavy pedestal stand with a 1/2" plate base that will accept either my big vise, my portaband stand, or any other tool I want stationary. I started with dc scratch tig, played with stick a bit, and barely picked up the mig gun a month ago. After learning tig for 3 months and burning through 2- 125cf tanks of Argon, I filled my 220cf bottle with c25 and I've been focused on mig lately. I gotta say, after learning tig and all the techniques and nuances and angles you gotta learn with it, picking up mig was EASY. First bead I set down was straight and even, and I immediately Started just writing with it lol. I wrote out my kids names on some coupons and, after adjusting the inductance it just got smooth lol. I am glad I listened to the few people that said learn tig or stick first, cuz going from mig to tig would've felt like an uphill battle. Oh yeah, I'm going into a local fabrication shop tomorrow for a weld test. I know they run fluxcore at 460v there, a buddy told me. He said if they like my welds they'll hire me on the spot.

My certification tests were under the watchful eye of 5 different company representatives. Each inspected the tacks, root pass and filler/cap. Tacks were 1/4" (four of them). Any of them could bust you out. The bend test was a root, face and two side bends. Again, any of them could bust you out. Proud to say that in my decades, as a journeyman Boilermaker welder, I never busted out of a test. Nor have I ever had one of my field welds be rejected or fail any field test. This includes x-ray, magnaflux, or pressure test. Good to see good welding.

I was a welder for 20 years and I went into IT (my hobby) in 1998. I was ASME certified pipe to 8",TIG and stick, I was certified brass to stainless on cryogenic vessel valves. I was ISO 9000 certified in stick, flux core, mig and tig, uphill, downhill and flat. I welded an uphill mig on a pump mount for a BJ Services truck that I guarantee you still on the rusting truck frame. Do you know what I miss the most? I miss my fellow welders! The comradery, the jokes and so on. I miss those days! The welder that broke me out told me once, "STOP trying to make it happen and just let it happen!" "Day dream, get comfortable because you can't weld when you are uncomfortable" I've been in a ditch of water on my back welding and I've always remembered that and some of my most comfortable times have been in a situation like that!

Absolutely you can. You will need to get your skills down pat but that comes with practice and experience. I’m in Australia (boilermaker trade, 4 year apprenticeship then you can do all your advanced tickets for pipe & plate etc so it’s usually a career choice straight out of school) it’s a bit different to the USA. I do a lot of pipe welding for oil and gas (tig, mig stick) and it pays very well. Hard, hot work but I’d rather be doing this then be stuck behind a desk like I use to be!

I certified in the Navy as a Nuclear Grade welder. Was the emergency welder on a Submarine. First sub I had to qualify on 308 SS then the second sub was an Inconel reactor plant. Had to do quarterly Visual/PT and then annual X-ray. Both were restricted 12" above, 12" behind 1" pipe in horizontal position. Cut and shape your insert, create your lands on the pipe, tack 4 places, pull the insert, then filler and cover passes. It was so hard to do. When basically you only weld every 3 mos you start to lose the touch, one dip of the tip and you fail tungsten flakes show up nice in an X-ray. Usually took 2 weeks of non stop 8 hrs a day to get a pipe to pass X-ray. Then you go to sea and don't touch it for at least 3 months again. Once I had to qualify X-ray after not touching a torch for almost 6 mos. What a bitch!!! Love your videos good stuff

Just a little advice for those who go into test. When you go into take your weld test and your pipe is tacked tighten a crescent wrench at the edge of your pipe so you have a resting spot for your arm, rather than holding it in the air or a hot pipe. Does wonders believe me. Also get a good placement around your pipe and do a dry run around before you start a pass. Less tie ins the better.

Ive been at it for 18 yrs. From green hand helper to boilermaker to pipe welder 10yrs straight to NCCCO operator to manual machinist. I'm taking a structural and pipe test tomorrow and that's why my ass is on RU-vid at 1:30am. This is how I get my jitters out. I've never, two tacked a test. Pro tip: tacks at 12oclock 3oclock 9oclock (right handed welders) 5oclock (left handed welders) 7oclock. Not once have I had an issue in a test lab doing this. Ive tested in SETX, Houston, SWLA, and Virginia. In Virginia they gave me a 2"sch 40 carbon to 2" sch 80 304L on a 45°. It was the hardest test I've taken. Second pro tip: get a big glass pickle jar and the tig torch head. Sit on the couch while watching TV walk the cup on the pickle jar. This will stop you from pushing on the tig rig and help you form a good muscle memory. Also you can tape copy paper to it and see the weave of your walk. The cup will make a grove in the paper. Like he said in the video nobody can give it to you, you have to go get it. So practice, practice and practice some more. Welding machines are getting cheaper and cheaper. Go to a scrap metal yard, buy material to build a table, and material to weld on. (Tig welding) make sure your metal is clean, if not your welds will never look good

You cut a sheet of steel/aluminum in 4 pieces, weld 2 passes with oxy acetylene, second was TIG, 3rd was MIG/spool. Then you'd have to roll it on an english wheel to fit a buck. Secret to a smooth weld was a few shots of Jameson.

Very inspiring I just bought my first TIG machine learning privately. I have only "soldered" electronics in the past, so this is a BIG leap for me. lol.

Soldering electronics can get complicated says a guy who burnt a hole through a board trying to resolder a pin that I didn't make sure was lined up before reconnecting a wire connector .

Where i live the companies here do all mig on anywhere from tube to 2 foot i beam steel. You go in for an interview bring your hood wear your boots then you go out do your weld test and they say yes or no and if they say yes you start right there no matter what time it is. I've failed weld tests when i first started out.

Man I've been a welder for over 20years but all my welding experience has been in the motorsports industry... All of the testing I've done is so different... It's kinda funny how you could have 3 people all be welders but all 3 have radically different experiences with welding I would hate to have to do some of these pipe welding tests lol My judge is always the xray/ultrasonic testing and/or the machine alot of us call the ripper...the tensile strength testing machine.. I really enjoyed watching how you guys have to do things ...very interesting to me anyway

I busted my first test but I always take a notepad and write down what the weld looks like how it felt to weld it. Sometimes even take notes on the gap and landing, maybe write down what material it is you know Carbon or Stainless for example what size rod to use what amperage. You know it’s all little factors but if you can learn to eliminate the small things that can mess you up you can focus on the big picture and it’s just laying that metal down being consistent and staying in the groove.

Also a tip for TIG. This guy is laying the stick in and just heating up the stick. This can cause more heat than you need. If you dab the stick instead of just laying the stick in the joint it will help keep the temps down.
@cakefartrpg2280
@cakefartrpg2280 4 года назад
That is the dumbest comment I’ve ever read. Why do so many people on here feel the need to talk out their ass when they clearly know nothing on the subject. Heating up the stick? He’s not stick welding. Also dabbing doesn’t help keep the heat down cause your using less filler rod. Using more helps absorb more of the heat which keeps the material cooler.

This is the first one of your videos I’ve watched mate and it was excellent. Good to see how humble you are and that you experience the nervousness that we all do for a weld test. I failed a test about 15 years ago and I still remember that feeling and like the bloke who guest appeared on this video said, make sure you always go there to make sure you pass. I let my arrogance fail me that day and it was a great lesson to learn. I work in the mines in Australia and we do tests all the time and at 42 I still get nervous every time. I think a good welder sees every weld as a weld test though if they have pride and passion in the trade. Keep up the great work mate. 👍
