In this weeks Test Drive, we take a look at the newly released Alabeo C177 Cardinal II for X Plane 11. The C177 Cardinal II was designed in the mid-1960's when the engineers at Cessna were asked to create a successor to the Cessna 172. Alabeo have recreated the C177 Cardinal II to a high quality, and its compatible with XP11. Please join Aus Flight Simmer, as he takes the C177 for a Test Drive around the block and provides his first impressions. Is it value for money? Check out this episode to find out.

I have actually time in the C-177 when I was delivering for Cessna. I loved the forward visibility in the aircraft and as you said speed management requires extra attention. The aircraft did not like to slow down on decent so a little extra decent planning is required. Overall I thought it was a fun airplane in real life, the sim looks like it has the right flight dynamics, the rest is pretty average. Thanks for the test drive.

Shane: Good video as always. I am not an X-Plane user (P3DV4) but I do have some actual C-177RG time from way back in the late 70's; mostly between Tamiami and Opa Locka in the Miami area with flights just off Miami Beach. BTW - I noticed on final that even though you said you were landing runway 16, the numbers on the runway said 34, yet your DG said 120. Hmmm? Is that some quirky Aussie thing? :>)

+Dennis Knepper No its RW 34, not 16. Not sure why I keep saying that. Thanks fgor sharing dennis 😁

I would say the DG is out of sync. Since the compass shows something around 340°. Since this was the whole time the case I am wondering if there were some autopilot problems when flying with heading hold. Most planes act crazy in X-Plane 11 when the DG is out of sync. Of course it can also be a bug. I have still only the old model. So I cannot check it now. But the old model was also affected by the DG drift and needed adjustments during the flight. And the "start drift" in X-Plane is sometimes very, very big.

Sehr gut das Video, eine Frage, wie macht man Autopilot (AP)? Ich habe das gleiche Flugzeug, aber keinen Autopiloten!

The Cardinal has the C210 wings without struts. It has a lot of lift and the whole tail elevator is moving unlike the 172/182 and 210. It makes it quite delicate to land in real life and float a lot. It does not sink upon touchdown which makes the XP11 version not correct on that aspect. Only slight Forward or aft movement on the yoke is needed. It does not like large inputs. I don t like the flight model of Alabeo/Carenado planes. The visual looks nice tho. Are there mirrors on the wings to check if gear is retracted?

Thanks for the feedback, I don’t recall the mirrors.

Does the "straight leg" version have slots in the elevator like the older version of the 177? The slot was put on the older ones because of some control issues, if not I won't bother explaining.

Hello Shane, Great demonstration, you SOLD me!! Can I ask what the Specs are on your computer, I hope to recreate the same look and functionality you have shown. Any information about the processor, RAM, graphics adapter will be helpful. Thank you for the Demo. and your help.

Is this the best version of a 177 for FSX? I wanted to get a 177 but don't know what options are there.

(Thanks for the video Shane). Although I quite liked the outside, I agree with Gunnie about the inside. Was almost FS9.
