Thanks Skip nice landing, 2 questions I didn't see the ILS Outer. Middle or Inner indicator lights activate on your approach ? and will the NAV radios pick up the VOR's freq when outside the ring shown on the Sky Vector Map. Please keep up the great work you're brill'. Paul
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi and thanks Paul. Not all airports support markers, Redding is a small muni airport so guess it's not available. A VOR can be "picked up" 30 to 45 or more miles away depending on weather conditions and terrain, in perfect conditions possibly up to 200 miles away so the ring, or compass rose, shown has nothing to do with the VOR range but shows you radials of the VOR. There must be "line of sight" to the VOR, so hills and mountains, buildings etc. can mess with the signal. Altitude helps as well, the higher you are the better "line of sight" you have with less chance for ground interference for the signal. Hope this helps. Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos Thanks Skip that makes perfect sense, another puzzling question when tuning the Nav radio for a ILS landing it looks like a VHF frequency is used, which is fine for the Localiser but the Glideslope / Glidepath is UHF so how does the Nav radio / compass know ?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi Paul, Well I never gave that much thought and I’m no expert on NAV Radios and radio frequencies. You mention “NAV Radio / compass” and I’m not sure what you mean by that, there is no compass associated with the NAV Radio. The ILS system use VHF and its range is farther than the Glide Slope UHF plus it uses a much larger antenna array. I can’t tell you how they work but very simply put (and probably not completely accurate) they are two separate systems each sending a signal which is picked up by the NAV Radio, which in turn interpret the signals and outputs the information to the ILS portion and GS portion of the VOR/ILS indicator. Sorry I’m not much help here but that’s the best I can come up with. Good question :-) Blessings, skip
@kd5you1
@kd5you1 4 года назад
@@WEHVideos Tropospheric ducting can cause or allow VHF signals to travel beyond the horizon, so it would be possible to pick up the right VOR from far away or even a wrong VOR from anywhere along your flight path. This is why it is important to compare the morse code ID you hear with the VOR you intended to receive.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 4 года назад
HI John, Right you are. The signal can also bounce off mountains and then instead of flying to a VOR you're flying into a mountain!! Another good reasons to use GPS but I still prefer the old way, Pilotage, Dead Reckoning, and VORs. Blessings, skip

Hi bigalexg, Glad you are enjoying the series and hope it's helping! Well you caught one of my mistakes! I have three monitors but only use the middle one for the videos and while I could see the VOR station on my left monitor I didn't move the view far enough to get it in the video :-( . Next time you are landing on RWY 34 at KRDD look to the right and you will see the VOR station. Sorry for the confusion. Blessings, skip

Boeing vs Airbus which is better? and do you think I should get XPlane 11 is it anything like real flying what are the pros and cons?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 6 лет назад
Hi Sabertooth Hook, Good questions! I do almost all my flying in small airplanes like the one I use in my videos so I'm not much help in your first question. I will say I purchased the Boeing 777 and it is amazing. The learning curve was way to steep for me so I quite trying, only because I wasn't that interested in big jets. I only have experience with FSX and X Plane and since FSX is no longer supported by Microsoft and third party people are trying to keep it going I have to believe X Plane 11 is the way to go in the future. Both FSX and X Plane have strong points and issues. X Plane is weak on scenery but it is getting stronger and stronger with each release. Plus there are tons of freeware scenery packages you can download from the x-plane.org site. They also have hundreds and hundreds of free airplanes you can download however I prefer the payware airplanes, they just seem to have a nicer feel and look, in most cases. I had well over 1000 hours in FSX until I switch to X Plane when Microsoft bailed, I'm really happy with the switch. I like the fact that you also get Plane Maker with X Plane so you can modify some airplanes or even make your own if you are up to the challenge. X Plane also has a program called World Editor (WED) you can download for free and create your own airport or modify existing airports. Bottom line, Iv'e heard that FSX is built on old technology and will eventually be too far outdated in the future while X Plane is going strong and hopefully will only get better. I know there other sims out there but I can not comment on them as I have no experience with any other that FSX and X Plane. I'm sure you could find some review videos on the other sims to help you decide. Good luck, let me know which way you go. Blessings, skip

oh so I heard that X-Plane is the best sim currently I used to play fsx and prepared3d (P3D) but Xplane 11 is the way to go since it has better lighting and graphics, customization ability for air crafts and scenery and much more detailed aircrafts, multiplayer vatsim ATC and so much more to it and the menu options and the way they allow you to set up your flight is very detailed in Xplane 11. :)

@13:12 Skip, you are planning to land on runway 34 (course 342) and you want to use ILS. Why your CDI is set on radial 129?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 2 года назад
That's a good question and I didn't notice that. The "to" "from" arrow is correct don't know why it show the wrong compass heading. I just selected the localize tuned to 108.4 and let it do it's thing. Blessings, skip
@apivovarov2
@apivovarov2 2 года назад
Better to set runway heading on CDI. It might be helpful for the pilot to determine in which quadrant the airplane is located relative to ILS and what heading the pilot needs to take to intercept the ILS beam. Needle and from/to arrow show you 3 quadrants on CDI where you are NOT located. Using elimination method you know that you are in remaining 4th quadrant.

So maybe this is all too obvious to even state in the video (and the prior part) but did you mention that the depth of “radio operation simulation” in XPlane seems to be: 1. Give the person practice setting up radios and switching active radios. 2. There’s NOBODY to talk to here, unless you wire up something like VATSIM to have a human actually to talk to. 3. You have to supply the knowledge of what would have been said to tower and what scenario the tower is going to respond with, for yourself. You’re basically pretending in your own head. Given that, it seems of minimal utility to bother with the setup of radios at all. Other than the ATIS part is simulated. In MSFS, the ATC chatter is added to the “immersion” experience but there’s still no way to talk to the tower. What I’m wondering is if there’s a way to simulate the ATC comms via some text based simulation plugin?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 2 года назад
Hi Warren, Everything you mentioned is true and I don't know of any 3rd party add-on that does this. X Plane 11 does have an ATC function but I've never used it, here's a link to a video explaining X Plane's ATC hope it helps let me know if this is what you are looking for and if it helped. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sFrnPyDG_Os.html Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos Thanks! Apparently the third party add-on that people use is VATSIM, which is a service which has actual human beings who are pretending to be ATC controllers for you, and others who want to fly in a shared server experience, giving you more of the "realistic aviation ATC communication" full experience.

@@WEHVideos Here's a guy flying with VATSIM, his friend is in the regional jet beside him, and he's in his virtual Airbus A320. He is using prepar3d but the exact same experience is possible with VATSIM + XPlane. Note that the default scenery in Prepar3d is pretty dire, much worse than stock XPlane scenery. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k5Zyl-AX7ak.html&ab_channel=Airforceproud95

There's also Pilot Edge which is really good. You have to pay a monthly fee but you get real traffic controllers talking to you.
