Drive testing all the new gauges & dealing with some glitches, but nearly done with all the temporary wiring before the big electrical rebuild.

~ PART#49 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

Lots of near full-throttle rips in this one as I test the new gauge array & start pushing the 4BT a bit. Great oil pressure, coolant

I still think you need a longer exhaust and slight tapering constriction,using a rifle as an example,if the barrel is cut off gasses will exit fast but pressure duration time becomes lost? You should see a gradual rise in the boost curve longer duration and diminishing slope after full pressure instead of a sharp spike that's better suited to high revving petrol engines!:)

@@jamescunliffe9872 It will get a full exhaust eventually, even if just for reducing the fumes that sneak in the cabin with windows down. But wouldn't in that example the end of the barrel be like the end of the turbine blades? As in after the blades the heat energy would have little effect aside from the scavenging effects of having a longer pipe, but I think even scavenging isn't useful until pretty high power levels. Not an expert by any means, but you do have me curious about it! (going to have to do some reading up on this later)

@@Tinker1837 not ideal but you may or may not get a very rough idea by semi closing the flip top on the pipe at different increments? But don't use something that's going to get sucked in!!! Commented a few years back before my other phone got stolen and hacked,Mr toad back then:)

the work you have done on the change to diesel has been exceptional, I congratulate you. I'm in the same mess, I have a 98 jeep xj, I got a nissan patrol 93 engine (mechanical) as well as the transmission and the transfer, I did everything thinking about avoiding problems with electronic sensors, I hope to finish soon.

in my Cummins 6BT Land Rover 90 I always used to set off in 3rd then change directly into 5th at 30mph, I reckon youd get away with 2nd, 4th, 5th lol

We need a build break down! Labor, parts, cost, ect ect would be awesome. I love my d2 and am looking into swaps since this thor engine is garbage. Im thinking a 4.8 vortec or a 4bt

is that speed sensor on the side of the gearbox actually a reverse light switch? P.S. Defenders have a speed sensor on the rear output of the LT230 so you may be able to use that with your set up?

It would be funny if it was, but I'm pretty sure it's the VSS since I ordered the plug for it to wire up & it said VSS in the description. I do believe my LT230 has that as well, might be worth looking into!

@@Tinker1837 haha no worries, just seemed a little too far forward for VSS is all. With the LT230 VSS it would be correct in high and low range, would need one from Td5 or TDCi defender

Not original, it is a NV4500 5-speed manual from heavy duty diesel american pickup trucks.

Nah, it's only temporary. It would be fun, but the smell/fumes are not great with the windows down.

Seems a bit lethargic. EGT numbers are very low... You can get up to 1200F. Boost pressure means nothing to a diesel, you can stick 100psi in and still make no power. Check your timing and fuel screws. Your EGTs should come up MUCH faster.

That may just be a combination of me being careful & super low 1st gear & the 34F temps. I for sure need to do some more tuning now that I have the gauges to see what's happening. Still blows me away how cool these things run! At idle it doesn't even register on the EGT gauge & I confirmed it's accurate with a laser temp gun + I can put my hand easily right on the manifold... bonkers!

Hello, nice project! Does discocer 2 comfort block works if there is no stock ecu? Thinking to swap engine and want to know do central locking, el windows, wiper etc... works fine?

Hows the gas mileage? Look like awesome fun ur havin. If I was a bit younger and healthier, I would throw that Cummins in my Hummer H3. Its a slow turd with the 5 cylinder so the Cummins would be perfect and better gas mileage?

No idea yet, but now with gauges I can start to check. If I had to take an educated guess I would say 22-25 in this rig. It's fun for sure! Could definitely be a fitting swap for an H3 in my opinion.

Good eye! It's one of the next things on the list. I have the brake rotor mounted to the back of the transfer case, and a nice mechanical Wilwood caliper in the box, just need to build a mounting bracket.

Okay what rpm are you running at 70mph. Couldn't tell but sounded around 2100

That's perfect. I was concerned it wouldn't due to the low rpm of the Cummins. I think the 35s off set the loss in rpm nicely

Right! The 3.5:1 axle gears + big tires are a lucky match to the 4BT's low revs.

You'll have to do a max speed test. I can't remember if you left the stock Gov springs. But if the governor is 2700. You're looking at close to 90mph. Too fast for disco anyways... lol I wouldn't ride the governor past 2300 for extended periods anyways.

If you went with an NV4500, if I’m not mistaken, that sensor is for reverse. At least my nv5600 I swapped into my 6.7 is what it’s for. As far as RPM, typically is read off the Harmonic balancer/ crank position sensor. But I’m speaking without going back on your other videos so I don’t remember if that was addressed or not. My opinion on getting proper speedo, would be to see if you have a speed sensor on the tail housing on the t case or rear diff housing maybe? Idk man, but loving the project as spoken countless times. Just posting my .02

I think you're right on a Dodge case. But this NV4500 is a kind of a hybrid, with the front half being heavy duty Dodge, and the rear tailhousing being GM with that 2-wire VSS.

It will be pretty funny if I've been hooked up to a reverse switch this whole time, but that plug I wired up to in there did say "VSS" in the description when I ordered it from AC Delco, and I have a new VSS sensor that theoretically should fit in there... we will see!

I think it will be near perfect honestly, it's just 1st gear that is super low. Very short on-road, but great for off-road! I may start practicing starting in 2nd soon. It cruises at 60mph/100kph at only 1850rpm, which matches my calculations dead on, so it's finally highway capable again too!

@@Tinker1837 i did notice that you're going to need a different boost guage....one that doesn't show vacuum and has higher psi readout possibly in the future as id imagine you're going to end up doubling the boost lol

If I did my math right it will cruise highway speeds at roughly 2000 - 2300rpm, not bad. You're right on that one, definitely an oversight on the weak boost gauge haha!

@@Tinker1837 Great Job! I'm a diesel junkie and have done a 4bt in a CJ 5. You have power potential with a tuned (Giles Pump, my favorite) larger injectors and turbo when you get to that point. My current project is swapping a VW tdi/Toyoya tranny and transfer case and into my 1999 Isuzu Amigo 4wd. Your gearing should be ideal for offroading.

Too much clutching. After u take off power shift with a throttle blip to rev match. You're letting the clutch out like a gasser

Absolutely not saying that tdv6 is better. It's having lots of problems. Just saying that stock tdv6 have much more juice.

Oh well sure, but that is something I think people don't understand about these old mechanical Cummins engines... they are very "turned down" so that they can run a million hours. So yes, many engines have more output from stock, but very few can increase so much for so little work/money.

You right mate. I'm sure that this engine can survive much more than other engines. Simply love to see it producing bit more smoke and power😉. Extremely nice project anyway and I'm really enjoying watching it.
