A 40 minute video on wargaming from The Medieval Wargamer himself? Truly, we are blessed.

Thanks for that run through Nic 😊 Very interesting set of rules but not sure about the formation side of things as most of my armies are based differently and probably won't suit the rules ... But I am looking forward to seeing Your workshops as things are always clearer when displayed on the table top Cheers !

Thank you dear Ray glad you enjoyed the flip through. I believe the basing does not affect the rules i think they work with most types of bases but as correctly point out let us see in the workshops i think they are going to be fun! Thank you for watching and commenting my friend!

I really like the ‘Follow the Money’ prioritisation of Household and MAA. Ransom and honour focused and don’t waste time on smelly archers who are worthless in terms of ransom!

Their first release was focused on The Wars of the Roses. This takes the main kernel of those rules and adds the 100YW specifics, that you are very positive about. Both releases come with Scenario Supplements covering historical battles in their period. I have played the WotR version and really enjoy it. I was hoping that this 100YW version would be the one I am looking for to fight historical battles. I think it is the one that feels most period flavoured. I am about to get my figures on table in the next few weeks to test them out. In terms of basing, you can base as you like as long as you follow the over arching principles,eg number of figs per base can be as big as you like and your table can take 😀.

Hey Nigel! I have to say these rules are the closest to the HYW warfare (and the parallel wars) I ever read. I am currently play testing a small game and I was surprised how easy it is to remember and how simple the mechanics are of all these period specific rules. They are incorporated brilliantly to the core game rules. I think that these are the best rules for the period I reviewed till date and very solo friendly. I believe also they would work perfectly for a campaign series. My only criticism would be that they don’t have pushbacks. But I am sure you know I am biased with pushback’s😂😂😂. I may ask the authors to give me some house rules for this..😂Thank you for watching my friend!

Great review. I think the problem with medieval rules is the period itself. You have Never Mind the Billhooks which is WOTR specific (even the Deluxe edition is generally same period except for their version of Italian Wars which I think are very poor), Barons’ War and these rules that are 100YW specific. Barons’ War period appeals to me more but I like NMTBH rules better (some things in Barons’ War I dislike or are not well executed IMO) but they won’t really work for Barons’ War. These of course are 100YW specific, the least interesting period to me, longbows, longbows and more longbows.

Thank you Dear Edward! Well obviously recently Medieval Rules are more period specific something that i have been asking long time ago as warfare withing these eras is very different. But a Medieval Battle had many similar situations as well for example crowding or funneling it something that could have very easily happened in a big battle during the Barons War era even earlier it is not necessarily HYW specific although we know battle that these events took place during the HYW war. Deployment rules also can be incorporated in most Medieval eras as Array and Battles Battle Waves is not only a HYW Characteristic. Thank you for watching my friend!

@@MedievalWargamer Yes I have a fairly in depth understanding of ancient and medieval warfare, I studied them both for several years across 5 different countries including England, France , Syria and Jordan, focussing on the Crusades and the Punic wars. IMO some rules represent their period fairly well, some so so, others not at all and of course none are accurate representations, just that some give a better feel for the period than others. The specificity that a rule set opts for can be a double edge sword I find, they bring out more of the period flavour but often don't transfer well. Equally, other than for pushing large numbers of figures some rules are just too generic and merely provide a game. That's why I like your videos for the rules perspective, I don't have the patience to try so many and those that do some periods very well (Shattered Lances for the Crusades etc) you will struggle to find any players for, let alone the rules. I'm less inclined to accept the shoe-horning of one period into another, just because some tactics might on face value look similar. Finding decent rules by trial and error though is a time consuming business :)

I've never played the rules and haven't read them but I get the feeling like playing anything other than the English with all the longbows is a waste of time. Or, at the very least, a complete exercise in frustration.

I have to say it is a very good set of rules I really enjoyed last night play testing to learn the mechanics…in general the rules are very simple even the special rules are generated on high or low die rolls and I learned them very easily. I think the workshops will make it easier for all to understand how they work and if they like them. Thank you for watching my friend!

@@danmorgan3685 Having been involved in playtesting the rules and some of the scenarios, I can say that no game of Test of Resolve is a “complete exercise in frustration.” Yes the English army with its longbows are powerful as they were historically, but they can be defeated using these rules. I can say that having won the Battle of Crecy and captured the Black Prince as the French.😊 Many of the historic battles were actually finely balanced and not a foregone conclusion so you can reverse history playing these rules.

@@johnewing4245 Hi John! Having played my first very small battle to learn the rules I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed them! The game reminded me 100% a HYW Battle and the rules made sense and were easy to remember after a few rounds. I will post the battle report this evening
