I finally had a chance to ride a fully equipped TiFLY X recumbent trike from AZUB in Czechia. I had been waiting for this since I left America on my trip to build it, and this is my first impression of the ride, the balance, and the overall experience.

Azub should use Hemp fabric and maybe even Hemp foam. Hemp does not allow moister.

You look so happy riding this trike. Keep in mind that the Shimano Steps system has three levels on each - Eco, Trail, and Boost - modes. I used the E-Tube app to custom set all levels to my liking. Sylvia Halpern has a nice video on using the app that I used as a guide to custom set my Shimano Steps modes.

Man that trike looks like a sweet ride. I have 24x2.1 tires all around on one of mine and if they roll harder than 20" I sure don't notice. Great video.

I prefer to say Sackrest. All that sponge on the seat is ok for cold climates, but on long trips in the heat it will be soaked with sweat. After a rest, sitting back down on cold wet cushions will not be too nice. I prefer my well shaped mesh seat on my magnum (but wish it had rear suspension at least.

Really enjoyed today's vlog as I do with all of them...I built two trikes the first 26 inch and them change it to 20 inch wheels which I bought from terrace trikes when I was in the States...it was lower but alittle easier on the up hills. My two younger brothers both have e bikes

This is a nice trike Matt. Larger diameter wheels have some definite advantages, something I learned well with my ICE Full Fat (3 26x4.8 tires on 26 inch super wide wheels). The tires on the Ti-Fly are not as massive, but they are large enough to provide some great comfort compared to standard road tires on a 20 inch wheel. Massive ground clearance provides some additional advantages too, like easily straddling rocks, roots, ruts, and as you show here, tall grasses. Instead of going around, or avoiding altogether, obstacles, you can simply ride over them, which is an awesome feeling after riding typical road trikes for years. And for your world trike tour, having the advantage of height and ground clearance can be a real life saver in rough or challenging off-pavement terrain situations. One thing I wondered about when you had the camera right in front of your legs while pedaling on that dirt road was the titanium suspension hardware interaction with the back of the rider's upper leg area. With a standard tube frame cross member, the feeling is a smooth one when stopped with the legs stretched out straight while resting. The titanium cross member would seem like a rather abrupt hard edge against the hamstring area of the thighs compared to a smooth round frame tube. Of course, while riding, this is a non-issue because the legs would not contact the titanium cross member ... but on long rides or cross country journeys, I have a habit of stopping to rest now and then to get my feet off the pedals, and the backs of my legs always touch the cross frame. Just wondering. This first test ride was fun, yet it would be a great follow-up to show in detail and discuss the technical aspects of the trike, as I am sure you are planning on doing. I enjoyed these fifteen minutes of "oh wow" "amazing" "what a ride" type of statements, and I am convinced that this trike is a smooth and enjoyable riding experience, but now I am looking forward to the rest of the story of this notable new trike model. Thanks for the experience here! steve

Hi Matt,i have the same tires on my (wheels 😉)Ti Fly X and they are very good punctured resistant.The rolling resistant is also good and they have a long lifetime.Rolling sound is also ok for such a wide tire.I hope that cushined seat soon will be available.

Those padded seats make a huge difference. I put an ICE ergo luxe cover on my HP Scorpion FS26 and what a difference. It was a little tight getting it on the the HP seat frame, but it worked. Oh so worth the struggle to get it on.

I have said it before and say it again, of course you should have electric assistance! You get further every day and you can have your nice trailer behind without you feeling it. Complete one more boom with engine and you have two options with and without engine and replace when you feel like it.

Thanks Matt for a great review and test drive of Azub. I’m also thinking about getting one myself, but don’t have access to test drive one in Finland. How do you find Ti-Fly X steering stability in comparison to other tadpole trikes you have driven? By that I mean for example on straight gravel/tarmac roads, is Azub stable and doesn’t need much of steering forces from driver to go straight on? I had opportunity to test drive Azub non suspension model T-Tris AR with 3x26” wheels and that felt really good, altough a bit stiff without suspension, but steering didn’t need extra efforts from the driver. Also my current trike HP Velotechnic Scorpion 20" is quite the same with really good steering stability.

I am looking at getting one of these in about a years time, perhaps with 24" front rims and 90mm drum brakes though. One of my routes home from work more than resembles where you were riding here, so I think it would work well 🙂Be good to see what you end up with!

The suppleness of those Vee speedsters contributes to the smoothness, but with that comes the trade off in puncture protection. Personally if I am using those tires I would look into innertube sealants.

Oh, one more thought! I wonder how those tires will do with flat resistance compared to something like the Marathon Plus by Schwalbe. The tires on my Full Fat were pretty worthless off-road due to their super thin construction and going flat (four flats in two days in the Mojave Desert). I found that the only way to ride them off pavement with any reliability was to switch to a tubeless setup with Stan's No-Tubes liquid sealant inside (no more flats, but a hassle to set up initially). Maybe these stock tires AZUB uses on the Ti-Fly are far more substantial than the inferior Schwalbe Jumbo Jim tires that ICE puts on their ICE Full Fat trikes. Hopefully that is the case! steve

Hi Matt.. Hope all is well.. i just realized that you left Portland.. I'm a little behind schedule.. med issues.. I spoke with Honza about getting a padded seat (like the ICE trikes) ask him what his response was to my request.. LOL.. I think he changed his mind.. LOL I've lost most of my eye sight and i'm taking it easy now until i can arrange for assistive devices.. It would have been fun to take you on the Springwater to Boring.. Mounting the Trike on the Van..? what about going to a boat shop and looking for a winch system that swings off the edge of the boat to lift objects out of the water..? That trike could be on that beautiful rack you have mounted on the roof. (you already have the ladder).. Just watch out for low parking garages so you don't plow the trike into the concrete on the second floor.. Know your overall height and add an extra 6" for clearance safety..

there is a throttle... its built into the motor. it has three levels of power and responds to your pedal pressure. It also has the speedhub gearing.

Design is bad..your leg hits the chain ..catrike doesn’t have that problem ..see all the grease on your leg ???? 60 mile trek will cause bad chaffing

all trikes have exposed chain near the front chainring.. even Catrike. The heavy weeds and grass i was riding thru were pulling the chain tubes left and right as i was guiding the trike thru the field there. There are not catrike models that could even get in that terrain like this, and if you did upsize the wheels on one and pust it hard into that grass it would do the same thing. If you were riding trails or open road, your leg would not touch the chain.
