Jeremy reviews HTC's new Deluxe Audio Strap for the Vive virtual reality headset. We think it's an essential upgrade for HTC Vive users, improving the fit and comfort of the headset and adding good built-in audio. This is what we wish the Vive shipped with last year!

The attachment point for the audio strap to the HMD is probably loose because you're removing the original strap improperly

TheWobblyEmily You need to twist the attachment points clockwise then they will release. There are many tutorials online which show you this.

I would really like to know how the Deluxe Audio Strap headphones compare to the supplied earbuds as far as sound quality goes, I do not use external headphones and don't plan to, so it would be nice to know if they are better or worse than the buds, No one seems to answer that question in all of the reviews I have watched.

Does this relieve the pinch on the back of your head from the default strap? I find I can't play more than an hour before the back of my head hurts too much and I have to take a break for quite a while.

Yeah, I'm glad I went Rift after the price drop. I live in Australia, so if I wanted a Vive with the deluxe headstrap, that'd run me close to 1600 AUD. The Rift on the otherhand, has a great headstrap out of the box, with intergrated audio, and it was $800 AUD. The Vive's room scale might be nice, but it's hardly an extra 800 AUD of nice.

Yeah I signed up for emails but never got one too. I ended up getting one off Newegg a couple weeks ago because Vive wanted too much for direct shipping to my location. I do have one gripe though, the original photo's they showed before it released showed pleather padding on the Deluxe audio strap. Somewhere along the way they switched to foam. We use ours for retail use and the sweat soaking into foam in general is pretty gross especially when handing it off to someone else. They make a waterproof eyepiece cover out of leather I guess I'm going to have to try to find some for the deluxe audio strap now too.

Oculus is working on getting more than 2 touch controllers to work at the same time in their beta program. It does not require an additional usb dongle like the lighthouse tracking puck and you get 2 touch controllers and a sensor for the same price you pay for a single lighthouse tracking puck. Honestly just the better cable management and weight distribution is worth the price to me. The Vive is great but it gives me actual discomfort after only 20 minutes of play, mostly because of that cable putting pressure on the top of my head, and the headset more or less resting a lot of weight on my nose.

That's too bad. I've tested a Rift for about a week and just couldn't bring myself to keep it based on a couple factors. Image quality and comfort. Was hoping that the VIVE with this add on would be a viable alternative for me.
@Kyle-yn5hy
@Kyle-yn5hy 7 лет назад
I mean, when it comes to image quality, the Rift and Vive are the exact same. Some people even say the Vive has a more pronounced screen door effect than the Rift but that's not a sure thing. The only real advantage the Vive has is it's room scale tracking. The Rift does have room scale, and it's not bad, but it's definitely not as accurate as the Vive. Which is understandable considering the Rift is also like $200 USD cheaper.

“The only issue is that It just sorta falls right off” maybe because you guys broke the connector by just yanking off the old strap? You’re supposed to bring the strap down then it unclips
@inceptional
@inceptional 7 лет назад
So, with basically the same head strap and built-in headphones as the Rift--for all intents and purposes--it's now £860 for the Vive vs £600 for the Rift; that's a £260 difference. And, let's say you even fork out for an extra third sensor on the Rift, it's still $860 for the Vive vs $660 for the Rift; that's a £200 difference. Plus, you still get an additional Xbox One controller and a remote with the Rift at no extra cost. My point being that anyone who chooses the Vive over the Rift at this current point in time must be mental imo.

Really? No cable management channel of sorts? Just the velcro strap? Yeah that is a bit of a bummer. The only good thing is that if you step on it, it'll break off instead of yanking the headset off your head, but come on. There has to be a better solution for a $900 all-in product.

I wish they would put more polish into it, a completely new wireless headset, with an optional cable for charging while under use so if you run out of battery you can just plug it inn, there are third party wireless solutions but its all so smashed together and an unfinished beta feel to the entire product. Putting the battery and the transmitter at the back would help balance the weight even more, i was considering a belt solution for the wireless and battery but it would be another attachment to putt on whenever you need to use it so no. and a better resolution display, 4K is a must in VR ithink, sadly the Chinese one has some bad optics wasting the resolution abit Also the vive controllers are shit AF, they need to learn a bit form oculus there, or just any good controller manufacturer like playstation, The tough pads rarely work well, and used more often as just a big button. a tracking glove would be cool but i think wee would always have use for physical buttons

Since they already copied the the design of the headphone sliders from the Sennheiser Momentum, why didn't they just team up with Sennheiser to deliver a proper audio solution? From what I saw in this video, I wish they'd just make a rigid strap without the headphone protrusions, so I could use my own *quality* headphones. You pay 800 for a headset, but you want to skimp on audio? Stupid.

I have some very high quality headphones I can use with the Vive, but I am more than willing to trade those in for the built in solution so I don't have to fiddle with it. Everyone forget to remove the headphones first and just grab the headset often denging the headphones to the ground, or if there moving around a lot the headphones may fall off. I really really look forward to having the built in headphones.

@andreasr.1778
@andreasr.1778 7 лет назад
The price is the main issue with this technology. As long as it's this expensive, only few will make the investment, which in return gives no incentive to the games industry. Without mainstream AAA titles supporting VR there's even less reason to shell out so much cash. (The infamous vicious circle.) Prices need to drop fast or VR will once again vanish like it did in the '90s.
@CynicatPro
@CynicatPro 7 лет назад
The problem with the AAA argument is it assumes that AAA's have always been around. they haven't, the games industry got along just fine as a niche market, VR will too. I agree the price is too high at the moment, but predicting its death is hyperbole.
@andreasr.1778
@andreasr.1778 7 лет назад
There's a difference between indie game studios and the makers of VR gear. While small game devs can survive in the niche market, VR companies invested massively into R&D, production and marketing. If it does not turn a profit, it'll be off the shelves soon.
@CynicatPro

Consoles went through the same phases. expensive hardware, etc... its part of the process of a platform finding its feet. VR isn't going to die... chill.
@aaron4820
@aaron4820 7 лет назад
All technologies require multiple phases to get to mainstream, mobile phones costed $4000 equivalent per unit and now you can get a decent one for a few hundred bucks. Last year was the first stage of VR in any real sense (no, virtual boy didn't count), and we're already seeing cheaper alternatives such as OSVR, Primax and more. When it reaches the 3rd generation Oculus / Vive, I think that's when the industry will be a bit more matured, but right now we're still in the Wall Street Brick mobile phone stage, so I wouldn't worry, VR is not going away any time soon.
@andreasr.1778
@andreasr.1778 7 лет назад
Yes, the first portable phones were large and expensive , but the benefit was equal or better than landlines. Same goes for the first $24k plasma TVs, you could do everything others could and more. What I'm saying here is, either the range is vastly increased or the prices need to drop, preferably both - I think that we can agree on.

For all those who say it is expensive, just remember, the good is always going to have a high price and those who appreciate it buy it.

wow it's just like a rift now... except twice as heavy and 200 bucks more expensive. oh well
@Ringtail216
@Ringtail216 7 лет назад
The vive is actually 2 grams lighter than the rift now, due to improvements since launch.
@snozzmcberry2366
@snozzmcberry2366 7 лет назад
@Ringtail overall, yes. The vast majority of that weight still sits in front of your face though, where on Rift it's evenly distributed across the whole headset. Also, the deluxe strap puts Vive's weight back up above again (still improves comfort greatly, just a pedantic point)

The Vive is not really JUST LIKE the rift, lets be real here. The comfort, design, screen brightness, pixel density, and tracking solutions are pretty different between the two.
@snozzmcberry2366
@snozzmcberry2366 7 лет назад
@EVOLICIOUS Indeed, it isn't. Vive is more front-heavy, bulkier, more expensive, less clear lenses, less sharp image, heavier SDE & more awkward controllers with less intuitive, natural buttons that give you virtual sticks rather than virtual hands. And here's a shocker: *There is no practical difference between Lighthouse & Constellation with a 3-sensor Constellation setup.* You have *zero* evidence to back this bullshit up, while there is a ton of Oculus users enjoying flawless room-scale with 3 sensors each and every single fucking day.

And the Rift saw the controller and roomscale capability of Vive, and retro fitted it to compete, these are good development and competition for VR, and good for the consumer, quit the silly hardware tribalism.

They've been copying each other yet still want to have exclusive platforms. VR is already small enough. We need software to be open as hell for more developers to feel like there's a big enough pool of potential customers to make it worth it.

I keep seeing others say the same but what content is exclusive? I know there are some initial release exclusivity but other than that almost anything can be played on either.

You mean like rift copied the VIVE with the controllers and 360 room scale? lol
@SegginsProductions
@SegginsProductions 7 лет назад
aaron4820 Oculus had actually been working on hand tracking for years, before Htc had even shown anything, the room scale however has kind of been worked on because of the vive.

the integrated audio looks awful

its apparently pretty decent, equivalent of roughly a 60 buck headset and a bit on the high-mid range lacking a tad in bass

While playing on my Oculus, I have to say that the integrated audio is immersive enough. Thanks to the 3d sounds, you do not even think about the quality, and sometimes it sounds so real that I am not certain if the sound came from the real world or the virtual one and I have to check. Besides, I have a pair of 500 dollars headphones and a 250 dollars amp to make them work, plus two 350 dollars speakers. So trust me, I know how good audio sounds like ;)
@HybridEnergy
@HybridEnergy 7 лет назад
Yep, I'm a music producer, I have multiple head cup headphones for music production. In VR, these will be fine, in VR you want good treble and mid-high range quality and stock no bass adjustment. 3d and surround sound is far more important. Think about real life, things aren't high on bass, not like some god in the sky is bass boosting real life. It's only worse in music games maybe like soundboxing and soundshield or whatever it's called.
@Canal10000
@Canal10000 7 лет назад
HybridEnergy Yes exactly. What you want in VR is immersion, and I have not tried these headphones, but the pair on the Oculus work great for just that. Another very huge bonus is that they are sooo light weighted that you barely feel them at all

Do they really expect people to pay £1000 to have that ridiculous contraption on their head for hours? Two things the general public have no interest in paying for: VR and self-driving cars.

You mean try a demo unit that's been worn by hundreds of other people? No thanks; I don't want head lice and face cooties. Would prefer to spend 1K on a 32" quad HD monitor.

I had the same mindset as you until i tried out the HTC vive myself. Even now when i'm watching my buddies use it through my tv screen, it doesn't look fun, but when the headset is on you, it's an unreal experience. I wish i got into VR sooner. The one thing that was holding me back before, was that many of the games looked like childish games "like the wii", but when you're playing it, you don't even notice it. I'm having so much fun playing "the lab" and surgeon simulator. I recommend everyone to try out VR, even people that aren't gamers. It's a complete different experience since you aren't playing with a console controller and tv screen, i have friends that can't seem to play games with a controller, but with VR they can since it's their body doing things and not just their fingers.
