Tested In-Depth: Apple 11-Inch MacBook Air (2013)

Will and Norm sit down to review Apple's new 11-inch MacBook Air. This year's model runs Intel's new Haswell processor, which gives it much longer battery life than previous models and faster gaming graphics. We discuss which spec configuration makes sense, and whether this laptop is worth the upgrade.

The 2010 MacBook Air was still pretty slow. 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo. Which is like 1/5th the performance of the current MacBook Air. It was the i5 in the 2011 that brought it up.

Best computer I've ever owned. It's 2016 and this is still my daily computer. Work and play. Runs just as good today has it did when i bought the machine in 2013. Thats more of a testament to Apple's software updates but great machine.

I am an Apple engineer not because I particularly like Apple products but because that job became available and I have to say that people saying Apple products are fashion, not well built etc etc must have never used an Apple product. The build quality is leagues above competition (HP, Lenovo, Sony) and customer support is top notch. We can turn around a repair in 1 working day. However that being said, products that look and work nice definitely come at a price.

Mostly depends what you are looking to do with it... I prefer OSX for its unix based system, because I am a software engineer. I bought a refurbed Air for cheap a year or so ago and it has been fantastic ever since. If you just need a laptop for taking notes and basic stuff, go with a Windows Ultrabook. I know a lot of people like to argue price and operating system and everything, but it truly is situational.

Haswell achieves better battery life by NOT TDP reduction, but improvements in idle power management, by the way. TDP is only relevant for battery life when you are doing something pretty intensive.

Well it depends on the model, the 11" has had poor battery every year until now, but I'm really happy with the battery of my 13" Air. Roughly 5-6 hours of constant use and it'll go up to 10 if you're letting the CPU and/or screen catch a break once in a while.

Agreed, glass looks really lousy. Mainly because of it's size/shape, visual weight, maybe softer lines would help? I'm no artist or designer but if they come out with a consumer product it needs to be more neutral or built into a cool frame. The way it is now is not appealing.

If 128gb on the macbook air seems small then realize that it is a solid-state drive and has no moving parts. Also, there is SDXC memory card slot.Buy an "SDXC memory card(64gb)" for like 60$. That is what Air users are doing. Get 8GB of ram because OS10 is a 64bit operating system and it can utilize all 8gigs.OS 10.8 only take up 8GB of hard drive which will seem surprisingly small if you are coming from a windows environment. The macbook air runs cool, quiet and get 7to9hours of battery life!

A refurbished air isn't a bad choice. I'd look for a mid 2011 model with a Core i5 instead of the earlier C2D's. The risk with these systems is relatively low when buying second hand as well. A minimum of moving parts and an moderately easily replaceable battery make these all aluminium body systems quite solid and idiot proof. Generally mac's remain relevant longer compared to similarly prices PC options. This also makes a 2nd hand mac a pretty good option. TCO is low, new and old.

Get the MBA with 8 GB ram, and get the external superdrive when you need it. More RAM is the best upgrade you can get for your computer. A built-in optical drive will just make your laptop heavier and it's another point of failure. (Incidentally, you can save even more money on the superdrive by getting a generic external drive that works with your Mac.)

Yeah, and it only costs 35 bucks extra and takes up your lone thunderbolt port unless you get a splitter. And you have to carry an adapter around now. How convenient. I'm getting a 13" air and generally feel comfortable with the lack of ethernet, but at an office I'm contracting at they have spotty wifi and I'm not keen on needing an adapter since I've already got a secondary monitor plugged in.

Yes definitely. Intel HD 4000 and 5000 are actually really respectable for being integrated GPU's. And I would say you'd be fine doing video editing. What you should do is go to best buy, buy the windows ultrabook of your choice and use it for 29 days and return it on the 30th day. Once you get your money back, buy a macbook air. I guarantee you will want to keep the air. Ultrabooks are cheap and have touch screens. (why would you want that on a laptop?) but the advantages end there. Especially if you're using this machine for work/school. And if you absolutely have to you can run windows on a mac, but not vise versa

i know it is not much different and i haven't used it personally but because it doesnt use the sata connector it "should" be faster that traditional SSD storage. The only reason im okay with it is that it keeps the computer thin... but there is other SSD coming out soon that are thinner and if apple (and everyone else) doesnt convert, it willed be very sad. anyway I was trying to make the point that is not a cheap $80 SSD that is thrown into the computer.

I definitely agree in the case of the 11" Air, even with a killer deal I'd only want the Haswell, if it was a 13" I'd be interested in a 2011 or 2012 if the deal was right. Great laptops anyway battery aside. My 2011 model is holding up beautifully! I was never a big Apple person but my first MacBook changed that slightly, still a Windows user on PC and Android for phone but Apple laptops deliver the most important things consistently. (good kb, amazing trackpads, decent displays)

I think the macbook air is great for people who do not need to load various windows operating system. Adding windows operating systems can eat up 20gb(64bit) or more so if you need to run windows 8 and mac os 10 then buy the macbook pro. If you only want to use OS10 then get a macbook air. Also you can get a usb 3.0 external drive for 70bucks when you bring your macbook air home with you.

So... If it's a 9hr battery life for the 11" and 12hr for the 13" now, it should be more than double that thanks to time coalescing in Mavericks, which claims a 72% reduction in CPU usage. A laptop with a battery that lasts 24 hours... That would be amazing.

I have never really seen the attraction of the Air. When you are spending that kinda money on a laptop why not just go Pro.The size factor isn't that bigger deal to me, and the power / functionality out weighs it dramatically. Admittedly I am a power heavy user, but even if you aren't surely its "future proofing" yourself for a little while longer.
