What's the difference between a $5 and $130 smoke detector? How do smoke detectors even work? Will and Norm sit down to discuss those points and review the Nest Protect, a "smart" smoke and carbon monoxide detector invented by the father of the original iPod.

16:50 I'm SURE someone has said this since this video is almost a year old but: the reason the alarm is very vocal about "hey. i'm testing. this is a test, please be ready." is more for people who are extremely sensitive to loud, angry noises. This is also a recording, so it's hard to tell, but I'm sure for a 150 dollar alarm it's deaf friendly and attempts to vibrate your inner ear (cheap house alarms do not do this). so the fact that someone has time to alert a deaf family member or friend by signing "i'm testing this, it's okay." is extremely helpful. I mean, just the fact that the alarm speaks and attempts motion control is greatly helpful for the visually impaired. At the time of writing this, the cost has dropped about 50 dollars so for a home with persons that have disabilities imo this is very, very worth it. I just wish the website, or this review, touched on what I just did.

Smoke alarms should be voice controllable so you can yell "shut the hell up it's only bacon!" rather than flapping at it with a tea-towel. These integrated alarms sound fun from a geeky nerdy point of view. However they also sound like so much BS that feels like it's cashing in on a "what price is your safety worth?" attitude - it's a safety device that will spend (hopefully) 100% of its life doing absolutely nothing. That one time it stops you burning in your sleep, you won't care whether a £5 alarm or a £150 alarm woke you up...

I feel the code needs to be updated for smokes! Most combo packages are smoke and CO2. California thinks that by requiring CO2 detectors, they’re solving the issue. The real issue is the weight of these gases in comparison to air. CO2 weighs roughly 44 grams/molecule, CO weighs 28.011 and the air we breathe typically has a weight of 28.013. The best suggestion I have found is smokes on the ceiling and CO detector at head height level while in bed. If the CO goes on the ceiling, it may never function until the room is full of CO and by then it’ll be too late. I believe combo’s are not functional. Lastly, I think CO2 detectors are useless in a home but if you wanted to add one for extra security, it should go in your baseboard again where it will function the fastest. Sorry to be long winded but I think we have major fundamental issues with our codes concerning detection locations....

The Nest system is an awesome system, but I think that it could be better. For example:Why not build a Nest smoke alarm system with the main base unit in the hall, by the master bedroom and sensors throughout the rest of the house. For example; Kithen, Garge, boh bathrooms ad all of the bedrooms.

7yrs isn't bad considering most C/O detectors are rated for 5yrs due to the biochemical element needed for detection. Needing an internet connection for notification is kind of a bummer since when your power goes out you will not get notification of an alarm on your phone. What I'm wondering is, while this smoke detector can detect fires and send you a push notification, what if the WiFi is cut-off by a very localised fire? You mention that it has a backup battery in it, but if you're not at home and the WiFi gets cut-off before the smoke detector has a chance to detect it, it would defeat the 'connected' purpose of the device. Also, WiFi is rather unreliable for this application I think, in terms of router stability and power outage. A 3G option would have been a good idea. Maybe for the next version?
@sheenaleelovely
@sheenaleelovely 10 лет назад
In either scenario the house is burning down, who cares if the internet works or not. If it does it does, if not oh well. Secondly 3G would require additional subscription fees probably added to each detector and they are expensive enough. I also hate that you can't wire one circuit and add a protect one at a time.
@jorenmartijn
@jorenmartijn 10 лет назад
So that's why I asked the question. The idea is good, but not bulletproof.
@rickbergess2858
@rickbergess2858 5 лет назад
The main function of a smoke detector is to wake you up, and get you out of the house. CO is really scary, as you can't smell it, and it can kill you. The feature of a txt from the device in case of an alarm is cool......If the WIFI is down, I don't care, if my family has gone outside. Price point seems high, although being able to silence a burnt toast alarm helps justify it a bit.
@OverSoft
@OverSoft 10 лет назад
So, the only difference between this and a $5 smoke detector is that it tells you in English there is something wrong instead of making a beep? And it uses more batteries so you can check via your iPhone if the battery is almost dead... Yeah, that is worth the extra $125... (NOT)

You guys have mixed up building code versus law. Building code (buildings that are being built) states the requirements for smoke and CO detectors, whereas the laws for homeowners are much less strict (for homes that were built and grandfathered into laws that existed from when they were built)
@jaredtraver2232
@jaredtraver2232 10 лет назад
Nope, in most states if you replace detectors you have to comply to code, you don't get to keep hiding from it, also if you sell your house you have conform to current code to sell home in 19 states. IN NEVADA if you change breakers by law you're showing a knowledge and must comply with current code.
@ahero4heor
@ahero4heor 10 лет назад
Partially correct, hence my comment about homes being both built earlier AND grandfathered in. The requirement for the latter is that no construction exceeding $1000 in cost has occurred and the owner or occupancy (in the case of renting) has not changed, otherwise the full building code would apply. Although, in California (the home of both Tested and myself) if a smoke detector is replaced or added its only current stipulation (in the case that full building code does not apply) is that it must be a 10-year battery model. Also, according to the video, Nest Protect does not meet this requirement for some reason...

Here's the only problem: what if you're in a meeting when the smoke alarm goes off, and someone's stuck in the house? It's safer to have smoke alarms that are wired to a monitored burglar/fire alarm system. That way, the monitoring company knows there's a fire and will call the fire department.

I just wanted to clarify some misinformation on this video. Regulations in California require a CO alarm outside of sleeping quarters and on every level including a basement when the home is heated using fossil fuels of if it has an attached garage (single-family dwelling) and they are also required in dorms and multi-family dwellings where fossil fuel heating is used. That said, I'm not against people putting FA/CO units in all bedrooms and one on each floor - I do this and recommend others do also... But don't misinform. If you're making videos about fire safety - ensure you're quoting the right information.

Q 5. How many devices and where do I place them in the home? A This new law requires the owner “to install the devices in a manner consistent with building standards applicable to new construction for the relevant type of occupancy or with the manufacturer’s instructions, if it is technically feasible to do so” (Cal. Health & Safety Code § 17926(b)). The following language comes packaged with carbon monoxide (CO) detectors: For minimum security, a CO Alarm should be centrally located outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms. The Alarm should be located at least 6 inches (152mm) from all exterior walls and at least 3 feet (0.9 meters) from supply or return vents. Building standards applicable to new construction are as follows (overview summary only): • Section R315 et seq. of the 2010 edition California Residential Code (CRC) [effective Jan. 1, 2011] (applicable to new one-to-two family dwellings and townhouses not more than 3 stories and also where work requiring a permit for alterations, repairs or additions exceeding one thousand dollars in existing dwellings units): Installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom(s) in dwelling units and on every level including basements within which fuel-fired appliances are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages. • Section 420 et seq of the 2010 edition California Building Code (CBC) [effective Jan. 1, 2011] (applicable to other new dwelling units and also where a permit is required for alterations, repairs or additions exceeding $1,000 in existing dwelling units): Installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom(s) in dwelling units and on every level including basements within which fuel-fired appliances are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages.

Requiring so many smoke detectors seems a bit over the top to me. Then again, American houses all seem to be massive so I guess it makes some sense. I like in the UK and in my flat there is only one detector, which was installed when the building was built (mains wired and it is actually connected to a call centre). We had a full-blown kitchen fire and it did its job wonderfully (of course it was destroyed so needed to be replaced). Anyway, looks like Americans are getting ripped off here, as with quite a few other things. :(

It took them 22+ minutes to do a review with 5 minute content. All the other stuff they said is trivial and known facts. Skip it.

Well, if you're in a multi-unit dwelling WITHOUT a garage or ignition source, no you don't need a CO detector.

lol, the battery shows low after 1,5 month (6x AA batteries!) xD eielectronics alarms are powered for 10 years and have 50 years of experience in the business.
