This is a great way to teach, this should be how all hobbies should be taught. Any other youtubers who want to make teachable videos, grab a real beginner and teach them, let them ask questions organically, or even if they are purposfully asking more it works great for this
that single little comment at the end about the picture to do a paint over first to get the idea right is easily the most useful tip i've gotten from this whole video. and i got a lot from this. air brushes and washes man... miracles.
Somebody really needs to tell Norm how a GRAVITY-FED airbrush works, and what happens when you turn an airbrush upside-down. It is easy to teach. Just take the lid of his airbrush and confiscate it.
Scott Murray I assume they use the power of gravity to feed the nozzle with paint. So turning it upside down would make it not get any paint into the nozzle. What long term effects it would have on the brush I can't speculate about.
Scott Murray There are, in general, two different types of airbrushes. One is gravity fed - with the paint pot mounted on top of the airbrush letting gravity feed the paint down and into the brush. The other is siphon fed - with the paint pot mounted underneath the airbrush letting the vacuum created by the air rushing past drag the paint up and into the airbrush. Some airbrushes allows for switching between the two modes. Both of them deliver little to no paint when held upside down. :) There is no real long-term problem - just the immediate problem of not actually painting with your airbrush.
Steelmage99 Frank should probably not have painted his own thing this first episode, and maybe spent the episode observing and pointing out obvious mistakes instead :D
Steelmage99 I KNOWWWW, this has been bugging me the whole episode X) Why didn't frank just tell him? I WANT TO TELL HIM! This episode made this art school grad really twitchy X) I liked watching Frank work though.
Fascinating to watch non-artists be so precious about what they're doing and get frozen with uncertainty. Artists spend so many years practicing and happily making messes/mistakes in order to figure out what they want and learn from it. Eventually you have the confidence and knowledge to make anything work. There aren't really bad decisions... there are trajectories that take you somewhere new. Kinda cute to see the contrast in experience here.
love these videos guys. i find it really helpful watching other people's learning process. seeing the common mistakes when starting out helps one to pay more attention to these same mistakes when they do it themselves.
Norm was struggling at the beginning because of the way he used a "gravity fed" airbrush, holding it upside down stops the paint flowing into the air stream. Exactly what I did when I first started a few weeks ago.
I just started air brushing recently. for anyone who isn't doing it for work, or isn't sure if they'll be into it, there is a $50 airbrush and compressor on Amazon that works really well. Highly recommended.
If you want it bright, prime it white. General miniature painting rule. For stuff that gets handled a lot, you probably want a layer of primer on for acrylic paints to adhere to. Drybrushing is also a cool way to achieve certain effects. OSL (Object Source Lighting) for example is easy to achieve with an airbrush.
You guys should do a large Lego Technic build, specifically the huge 42043 Mercedes Arocs truck that is coming out in the next few months. It will be the largest Technic set ever released and contains a ton of moving parts and gears and a motor and even working pneumatics to move the crane arm and an on board air compressor. EDIT: I hope that didn't sound like span or anything, just want to see you guys build and review it.
This was lots of fun-- I am a member and will travel there today! Norm-- yours was the most whimsical, you should have continued with your forward movement. Frank's was the most conservative even if the most polished execution-- which was no surprise. Will's was simply too dark *first* but otherwise, not bad. For Will's, using layers of normal paints applied on top of the massive green, would be a more useful learning experience. Going the design route-- in the next vid-- is the best way to go! Looking forward to it.
I like how everyone whines about norm holding his airbrush upside down, yet Frank, who’s got the experience airbrushing, looked over at him while he was holding it in a ridiculous position and didn’t say anything, lol
I just wanted to help Norm with his design. Once he added the blue I just thought of going with a tribal colorful resurrection instead of the classic look. Would have been a lot of fun with the brush work.
Great video. Would love to see Frank take the models Norm and Will painted and show us how he would "enhance" the paint so they match Norm and Will's vision. Interesting to see how to correct or change paint challenges. Just a thought.
Wow, once again I am reminded to not read comments on youtube, yikes! It was fun to watch Frank paint, and really painful to watch Will and Norm but I still respect ya and liked this episode! It would have been better for those watching who wanted to learn from this, if Frank had payed a bit more attention to what the other two were doing and helped them out more? I sat here twitching, wanting to tell them myself! X) (art school grad)
Both Norm and Will are just doing whatever and Frank doesn't really seem to help them out with their problems and point out their mistakes and how to fix them at the end? So it's mostly a bunch of dudes painting models, with two screwing up and one scattering some minor tips throughout the video. Yeah... quality content right there guys.
Pepijn Rietveld They say when they start that for this first one he's just going to let them do their thing, and give them tips later based on what they did here. So.... to me this just means that the real tips bit comes with the payed videos?
That's Tested for you: bad videos on potentially interesting subjects. These Will and Norm characters are incompetent and deeply unfunny dipshits. Frank seems ok and knows what he's doing, a video of just him doing what he does with some commentary here and there would be so much more enjoyable to watch.
The point of the channel is they are blundering and not very good. It is like watching people who are bad at games just for the butt clenching it causes you when they notice nothing and do everything slightly wrong.
Hey Frank piece of friendly advice. I suggest pretending you're instructing children that have no clue about starting to paintbrush. What may seem a no brainer isn't true for everyone. It feels like the others are also looking to you for guidance. I get you want them to just sink in their teeth and try it without worry or technique but still some explanations earlier on would be great. Appreciate your work.
Frank Ippolito What brand airbrushing acrylics would you recommend from a durability standpoint. For thing that get posed / handled a lot? I've mostly used Testors brand enamels and acrylics, because you can pick them up anywhere. But the acrylics never seemed very durable.
Is it a good idea to start with a primer as a first layer when painting something like this? I would do - primer, pre-shade, "paint" and dry brush... Would that be a good idea?
Martin Blass That's a perfectly acceptable method, the only time you might have issues with using a primer is if there are very small details on a model that size. You might lose them with the layers of paint, but generally you're applying a small amount of paint with an airbrush so it's not as much of an issue as when you're brushing it on.
Martin Blass Its always good to use a primer, a lot of plastic can be to slick for the top coat to stick to for very long. Most models are styrene and that kind of plastic can change its size over the years ever so slightly, so your paint can fall off if you don't prime.
Wish Adam's 'one day builds' were an everyday thing on this channel or at least scheduled for a couple times a week. I could literally just watch him dry paint he's so interesting to watch. No disrespect to anything else that gets put on the channel though.
i never said i don't make mistakes. i like Adam and Jaime but if most the time i have to watch norm and will struggle my 40 bucks can be spent on better things then this.
I spent the majority of this video laughing my ass off at Norm, spraying his GRAVITY-FED airbrush upside down for 30 minutes, and seeing the look of confusion on his face when no paint comes out. Priceless.
When I started watching Tested videos I was very critical of Norm and didn't particularly like him but now I have grown to appreciate his quirkiness and he seems like a cool, nice guy. Will on the other hand irritates me somewhat with his apparent need to be in the spotlight. Watch when others speak, especially norm... he has some nervous/impatient twitches and you can tell he's aching to say his bit.
This was really cool and informative! :D Love it! Frank is the best! I don't have 40 bucks to spare right now though, but i'll get coffee videos weekly so i'm happy... :3 *sarcasm intensifies* Nah, joke lol, i get why you do it this way, i hope we might still get these videos in the future though as soon as they're irrelevant/aged on the site. Keep it up! ;)
shouldn't you guys be concerned with ventilation when airbrushing indoors? i'm trying to start airbrushing and would like to know if i should be concerned with ventilation
Ironicly I had to turn up the sound and go back, to hear Will say "audio quality" as the one thing unforgivable by youtubers. Overall great, even with compressors going :P
You mention hitting your model with some matte to take away the reflectivity. Can you recommend a good matte sealer that does not reflect? I'm really interested in being able to do antique bronze and copper, but every single time I do it my effects end up lost under sealer that is too reflective.
Get a compressor with a tank guys. That cycling on and off is super-annoying and not the best way to use an airbrush anyway. By the way, I ordered four of Neil Winn's magnets because of this video. I got them the other day and they're really nice. I'm looking forward to painting them. I just degreased them and will spray on primer when they're dry.
I feel like as great as airbrushing is, it's important to point out that anyone wanting to learn this should spend some time learning to paint models with a brush first. In my opinion learning colour mixing, blending and other brush techniques will help you when you begin to airbrush. Their final paint jobs are good for a first try but I feel what lets it down more than anything is their lack of painting knowledge. Just my opinion of course.
I keep coming back to this episode because it's a pretty decent episode on getting started on airbrushing, you have Frank who is the teacher, you have Will who has a decent clue and is able to host the show on his own, and you have the dunce of the group - Norm. Because you don't do what Norm does, besides he's not host material - glad we see alot less of him nowadays Adam really took over the channel.
I'm really out of the loop when it comes to the social dynamic between Norm and Will but I get a sense they dislike each-other watching some of their vids. Correct me if I'm wrong.
hadroncollidier They have been colleagues and co workers fort YEARS... tested has been around for i think 5 years and they worked at pc gamer together. They like each other, they get to do this amazing thing for a living.
Norm I think you are a great host but I can't help but to scream at the video. It is kinda difficult to get the coverage you want in a gravity fed air brush when you hold it upside down!
Nathan Stone i get that they arehosts but arent they apart of that whole special effects world? Or are they mainly technology based makers and have no experience with hand working processes like painting (which i feel is basic for most creative types)(but i could be very wrong )
I have asked this on several videos and you just mention it here in passing, but... where do you get Garage Kits? I know that people just put them together but is there like a website or place where a lot of people who put these garage kits together advertise and sell these kits? Any info would be great. Thank you
Jason McCabe You can get them from different websites or some stores who specialize in model kits and builds. For cheaper models you can check out www.e2046.com. I ordered there once but the shipping did take some time and they are generally recasts (decent but they do need some work). Another website you can check is www.shop2000.com.tw/GK-M or www.castlemodelgk.com/ . It depends on what your looking for but sometimes they have good stuff (most are cast from the original models so the quality is good). Now if you are looking for high quality kits you should check out www.industriamechanika.com. They have a couple of kits, including the Cosmonaut garage kit (These are more expensive, but very high quality). You can also check out Bigcartel. Just google ''model kits Bigcartel'' and you should get some results. These model kits are made by a lot of different artist and are amazing in quality. Some are more expensive though but it's so worth it. A couple of my favorites are: - www.labestiastudio.bigcartel.com/ - www.evanmorgan.bigcartel.com/ Last you can check out: www.mrdandy.com/ They have some really amazing original garage kits and sell bases for the models as well! I hope this helps :) Goodluck!
Dinxsy Most of the Adam and Jamie stuff is marketing related support I'd say. Their names and their mythbuster fame and occasional appearance on the RU-vid show boosts subscribers and ad revenue. Assuming Will is honest, Tested wasn't actually 'bought out' three years ago. I'd imagine the Tested site and show to be fairly self-sufficient for the most part. Knowing how somewhat narcissistic all four of them are, I don't think it's unreasonable for Adam and Jamie to think of Tested as a pet-project kind of deal. Anyway, that wasn't quite the point I was making. I meant to say a paid membership business model exists for the Tested premium member stuff, which if this video is indicative of the level of quality or teaching really doesn't bode well for what it's actually worth. Based upon that I'd never consider a paid membership. It's sometimes bad enough as it is that they will gain ad revenue from yet another Apple focused video LOL.
i think i am gonna bite the bullet and get the premium membership, adams poster will be available until july 31st so i want that, just a question i hope i already know the answer to, will the poster be available to the UK at no extra cost?
***** you can email the guys, or make a post on the forums. Dont qoute me, but i know they shipped to europe last year, but i dont know about the cost. Welcome to premium. NOW GET WATCHING THAT BACKLOG!!!! I have the mecahand poster framed behind my desk, and a set of the adam hand drawn prints from the live show. I had a great tested member in SF go to the show, and the guys at tested were nice enough to let him buy a set for me. :) So that poster is going to fit well on the other wall, or i might take it to my office.
