My favorite hunting caliber! Retumbo and some heavy 220 grain hornady eld-x and you won’t be disappointed. They hit like a hammer. Harvested many elk (17) with a 300 rum and multiple deer and a black bear and I have never been let down. It’s a little heavy for deer but it was a opportunity elk hunting. I love mine!! Keep the vids coming

I'll definitely be looking at more of your content. I've had my 300 RUM since they came out. I used the 180gr Nosler Partition factory load and it stacked them in on top of each other. I've had to go with custome loads since Remington doesn't offer them. Going to start reloading my own. Love the gun. By far my favorite of all my guns.

Good job! I have a 300 RUM, 300 Wby, 300 WinMag, 300 H&H and 30-06. They all shoot well. I like the 30-06 on Black Bear but prefer any 300 on elk! I enjoyed your video and your systematic approach.

@powercourageandwisdom

300 WIN MAG is a great caliber, but so is the 300 WSM. The 300 WBY is now stepping up and then there is the 300 RUM which bests the 300 WBY by 200 - 300 fps. It is really a radical weapon. I would not part with any of the 4 calibers mentioned above in my post. I absolutely love the two big brothers 338 RUM and 375 RUM just as much. These two as well as the 338 Lapua are as big as you need to go. Well... the 50 BMG is fun to fire as well but I rarely take it out anymore.

That's cool about the effectiveness of the muzzle break; most times it's disappointing with the first one, and usually takes a few other tries before finding one that's significant. 👍

I had a 300 rum costume made 15 years or so years ago from a 700-.280 cal. it has a Sendero fluted barrel with custom muzzle-brake. Great gun never lost another deer a lot of my friends said there was no Cap-Buffalo in Louisiana I told them I would rather loose 1Lb. of meat then 100 Lb. or so!! All of them bought a 300 of some kind after that!!

I shoot a 300 Win Mag for the same reason. I don't like having to track a deer through all the briars on my hands and knees. Since I went to the 300 WM every deer has dropped in their tracks, I don't think they even took a breath after the shot.

I also have a 700 Long Range (but in 7mm rem mag) that is semi-custom, and it is a shooter. In my opinion, the 700 Long Range is the best rifle to use for these types of projects. It is good enough for hunting straight out of the box, and you can upgrade components or get custom gunsmithing work done as your budget allows. I'm looking forward to seeing how this project progresses.

wbs a I agree the PRC is overrated stick with the 300 rum
@AKGuru4774
@AKGuru4774 3 года назад
As a guy who owns both, the RUM and PRC, the RUM beats it by 10 fold. The only real quality the PRC gives is its max load is the starting load (of same powder and bullet) of the RUM and the barrel life. Barrel life for the RUM: for me, it was shy of 1700 rounds where it would then send them out sideways down range. Typical accuracy was around .65 to .78" no matter that amount of shots (either 3 or 5), ie, 1 magazines worth. Barrel life for the PRC: for me, 2,000 down the tube and it is still printing MOA; an increase of roughly 70% from the 1st 100 rounds. Printed .453" 3 shot and .666" 5 shot groups regularly. PRC is definitely overrated, but it is a nice baby magnum for beginners. IMO, ill take 3150 with a 212gr over 2900fps with a C load with 200s

Billy McBride a 300wm is a great round with a significantly longer barrel life but it doesn't even come close to a 300 rum in power and ballistics. I love my rum because I can shoot 215s over 3200 fps its a laser guided beasts. But the down side is that barrel life loaded like that is only a few hundred rounds

My lone modification is a David Tubbs T7T 2 stage trigger set at 1lb on each stage. It's my go to rifle . Pretty much shy of the trigger it is a stock box over the counter rig. I have a Rem Long Range 300 RUM also, I LOVE IT!!! I basically did exactly what you did, Lilja 4 port brake, Triggertech trigger 1.5 lb and bedded it. Using Hornady brass (Nosler brass wouldn't shoot) it shoots 210 ABLR's @ 2980 over Retumbo 1/4 MOA!!! crazy for a factory gun at that price! Mine is stainless but I still only paid $700 for it new. I forget where I settled at in relation to the lands (.040ish?)but the closer I got, the better it shot. The down range energy is simply amazing and I can't put it down. With the 4 port brake you can spot impacts from 300 yds and out. I am so impressed I would like to take a 700 Long Range in 30-06 and run it through factory/handload testing. Then open the bolt face, sako extracter and re-chamber the same barrel to 300 PRC and run the same test. Then re-chamber the same barrel to 30 Nosler and test it again...and finally re-chamber it to 300 RUM and test it again! You might get to it before I do so...

The key to shooting the larger magnums accurately is recoil management, or controlling the recoil in a consistent fashion. Positioning the off-hand on top of the forward scope ring and applying light downward pressure helps a lot. However, paying close attention to your shoulder pressure may be the single most important thing you can do to get the gun recoiling consistently.

I bought a couple rem la rum actions and built a 300 ultra longrange rifle much like the m24 sniper rifle and the other i made into a 338 edge m24 style rifle. Also a 6.5 creedmoor and a 3006ackly. I use that same stoner break on everything but the 338. On it i use witt machines 3/4" break to have more meat around the bore. All have custom match grade bbls and were lapped/polished im using the copper equilibrium method and these shoot amazingly well. At 100 its not really note worthy to shoot .5moa ,if i do my part well .25 is more the order with good groups being .128-.18" I handload everything thats been through them. Hornady Eld's, Eldx, A tips, berger hunting vld. Like bergers best but Hornady is easy to get in town. I like the 208gr and 250gr in 300 rum 147gr in creedmoor, 178gr in 3006ackly, 300gr in edge. The ultra mags make 1000yds like shooting 100yds. Easy

brass varies massively in thickness. This makes reloading a nightmare. I am going to try H4350 next, the best accuracy I achieved was 3/4 inch with 7828SSC and Hornady 165SST. I used 86 grains and the rifle (Remington 700 Long range) shot very well, minimal recoil. 88 grains turned it into a beast to shoot but accuracy was horrible. I have the same muzzle brake and it does a great job of reducing the recoil.

I shot a group that I could cover with my hand at 1400 yards. The load was 91.1 grains of Retumbo with a 210 grain Berger bullet. Retumbo and some heavies will do well.

You can tighten the groups of just about any factory rifle by bedding the recoil lug. My rem 700 sps shot 1.3 moa factory, I bedded the recoil lug and got 0.75 moa with factory 180 gr accubond.

I have a massaged 300 rum built by George Vias on a 700 action Krieger barrel, McMillan A3 stock, jewel trigger, Wyatt’s mag box for longer Berger bullets it will shoot 1/4” 5 shot groops and smaller as the norm have shot some high ones as well it is more accurate than my 284 x 6.5 not by much though kinda weird for a over bored cartridge I no you want to try the other cartridge but consider playing with the rum some day think you would be surprised ! Good luck !

Id not even consider changing from a 300 ultra to a prc. Why? Less power less range no more accurate...seems stupid to me . I like sending 208elds 3300 fps into .25" groups and have enough power to drop bear at a grand. I wouldn't switch for a lesser cartridge

Like the video. I built a 300 RUM with a different idea. I built one on an old shilen DGA magnum action with a 30" 13 twist tight bore Obermeyer barrel. It shoots 168gr tipped matchkings under a stout load of reloader 25 @3585fps avg in the winter months. It holds well under 1/2moa if I do my part. I shoot it 1.7" high at 100yds and it zeroes at 300 with only 6 ¹/²" of drop at 400. It's a lazer. Keep up the good work

OK your rig makes sense! I never understood the 300 rum unless its to go as fast for caliber as possible to extend the point blank hunting range... what a monster! I've gotten away from the heavy high BC's in my 300 wsm and started shooting 150 coppers as fast as possible.

I have a Remington 700 Sendero chambered in 300 RUM. It's epoxy bedded with a Triggertech trigger, Wyatt's extended box mag and a Terminator T3 brake. It shoots sub 3/4 MOA all day long with Berger 210gr Hunting VLDs, 88gr H1000 at 3100 fps. I absolutely love this rifle and caliber, and the Terminator T3 makes it a dream to shoot!

I love my 300 RUM stainless; partially because my wife got it for me on our 25th wedding anniversary, and partially became it is the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. The 3 shot pattern at 100 yards is just one fat bullet hole! I adjusted the trigger too light for anything but bench rest shooting. It needs a heavier stock, a muzzle break and maybe a fancier scope for long range shooting, but I took a lot of time setting up the scope plate, rings, and squaring everything up; I'll probably never change anything or ever shoot up the 120 cartridges I got with the rifle (all of the same lot). My wife thought it was a 'varmint gun'? Which, is pretty funny in itself. After several 'prove your one hole' shot pattern, people have wanted to buy it. Not likely. It was just luck getting a bolt face and barrel of such matching good quality.

That was one slick trick with that brass casing at around 10:08. I am not sure why any Ultra Magnum doesn't come at least threaded for a muzzle brake from the factory. My brother loves the muzzle brake along with the pillar and glass bedding and 1" limbsaver buttpad on his around 2005 Savage Model 110 in 7mm Rem Mag, that he tried reloading for, but got frustrated. But that muzzle brake, etc... makes that magnum cartridge have felt recoil like a .243. Still trying to figure out what is going on with his charts out to 500 yards. Trying to set up a 500 yard out west mule deer and elk gun. I was thinking of the .300 RUM for the same thing, but ended with a sweet deal on a .300 WSM in Savage's new Model 110 Long Range Hunter that has an adjustable muzzle brake. Very similar style of rifle. Plus from all the negative comments that I have heard about Remingtons and their triggers outside of the Sendero I was cautious and looked away from Remington. Aside from the overly expensive yet extremely nice Christensen Arms rifle, no one really makes a rifle in .300 RUM that can be used for hunting and target shooting. I have always wanted to build my own rifle, so this series will be awesome to follow along. Good luck on your black bear hunt before you rebarrel it into a .300 PRC.

I am planning on building a Rem 700 in the 300 RUM, I was watching another video and he was saying the 245 grn bullets with a 28" barrel would work the best at longer ranges, so that the powder can all burn and you get the best acceleration out of the round. Mine will be for long range shooting and not hunting, unless a deer walks directly behind the target and i have a tag with me. :P Thanks for the videos.

Hate to see you downgrade a 300 rum to a prc. Add a wyatts extended magazine box so you can seat bullets out and try 215 gr Bergers, 90-91 grs should put you at about 3050+- at the muzzle and deadly hunting bullet. Or step up to the Berger 230 for extra high bc. Great video

I have a 700LR in 300wm. Had a lot of issues with it to start. It would not extract a fired case (had to send it back to have the chamber polished). The front action screw could only be hand tight because it would screw itself into the bolt at anything beyond 7 inch pounds (had to have it shortened or spaced out which looked ugly). The trigger was incredibly inconsistent (sometimes 2.5 lbs sometimes more than 8 lbs pull). It was incredibly finicky as to what it liked to shoot. Threw the trigger away and put a timey in and after doing some load work ups it now shoots and with the barrel now broken in it shoots 1/4 moa. Lots of work and effort to get it to shoot, kind of disappointed with Remington, but I love the rifle now.
