I worked with resin for the first time this year - I had some repairs I needed to do on my snowboard and an epoxy resin glue was the recommended material. Thanks to you guys I knew I needed to ventilate the room I was working in, wear gloves, I knew what it means when the resin started to get warm... Thanks guys, cause the glue instructions didn't tell me ANY of that.

Normally when mixing by hand, if you go fast, you are 'scooping' air in, with the 'screwdriver' you can hold it in the resin without introducing extra air into the mix
@ariseira_
@ariseira_ Год назад
Yep great explanation
@ChibiChula
@ChibiChula Год назад
Part of the problem is actually the wooden popsicle stick. Wood is porous and releases air into the mix as you stir and the resin penetrates the stick. Plastic or silicone stir sticks are better because of that. Silicone wins due to ease of cleaning. 😁👍

What you saw as "bubbles" or pucker on the first two looks more like amine blush, which is resin not curing properly, either from not being mixed enough or not getting warm enough. On that note, the lizard/heat mats are great not for curing speed, but if you live in a cooler climate and your resin doesn't cure or gets amine blush (me in a cold Canadian basement). Especially for thin cures like bookmarks, my heat mat really prevents sticky patches or amine blush :)

It always always always leaves that "hair like" residue "bubble" (they are absolutely not bubbles) on smaller molds. When I need a big output for resin casting (lots of molded items,fast) I mix my resin, add color and then microwave it for like 5-10 seconds (it heats up REALLY fast), then pour it. The heat promotes curing and it goes of, ready for demolding in about a quarter of the time plus the resin gets really thin and thus the bubbles rise to the surface faster and easier. Perfect for closed intricate molds with fine details. Some molds might need vibration or tapping right after filling to release bubbles clinging to the surface. So, try my hack and microwave your resin.

It's also worth considering regarding the curing mats that you appear to have the resin in silicon molds. Silicon is a fantastic insulator, to the point of being used as oven mitts. So that mat is having to completely heat the silicon before it starts to affect the resin.

it be really cool if they made a GIANT EK or Jube mold, and every time they have left over resin, they add a tiny bit to it. then in like 12 months when it's full of excess resin from projects you get a crazy mixed up thing of extra colors. or even like randomly put the hearts and squares used for testing. like and maybe they'll see this probably flawed idea lol

6:00 - Fun fact, those tiny pockets were actually used for pocket watches. The patch there is called a watch pocket and was created for jeans dating back to 1879!

With the way the resin was squishy when uncured but still solid, you should see if you can mold resin into stuff before it cures

The #3 mixer we actually use to mix resin seal where i work. Ours has a bracket to insert 2 popsicle sticks into that goes into the resin.

The resin mixer - keep blades submerged in resin. You still need to scrap sides unless you have the flexible blades. AND messy crafters, like myself, don't want resin drops on our nice drills

Something really cool, We live in a colder part of the world, so, to ensure our resin always cures, We attached a lizard tank pad to the outsided and then just put the box the pressure pot came in back over it. Totally solved all issues we had with temps. and its cheap/easy

I remember saving heating mat for resin about a year ago and it’s still in my Amazon list. This video helped me to understand whether it’s worth buying or not. Personally, it might not be worth it. I use 24-hour type (cheaper and less toxic), so heating mat won’t make much difference to me

I would say that the bubbles in the resin that was cured on the heat pads are likely water vapor from the moisture absorbed by the 2 parts of resin. Curing resin is an exothermic reaction meaning that it gives off heat, and because hot resin cures faster, you can have a runaway reaction. The excess resin that I sometimes have after repairing a surfboard has gotten so hot that it starts releasing visible steam and has even melted the container it was curing in.

You can make your own heat matt with flexwatt heat tape and an extension cord for less than $10 if you want to save some more money .

Reminder to always use a thermostat with a heat mat especially with live animals! They can reach over 180F, scorch wood and start fires if they malfunction, stya safe!

Very interesting to see the sheer difference ion the amount of bubbles between the "control" & the "heating pad" moulds. Just a thought : What if you used the vacuum chamber to remove the bubbles BEFORE pouring & THEN use the heating pad ? Would you still get as many bubbles ? Are the bubbles a product of the curing process ?

Please could you whip up sillicone as much as you can to add as many bubbles as possible, make a cube mould with it, resin the cube and see how bubbly the outside of the cube is?

It's possible that the cup got knocked off more easily when it was empty bc there wasn't any weight on it. The downward force pushes the cup into more contact with the sticky plate, so it like, holds better, maybe?
