Testing A DIY BOOMLESS & SELF TACKING Staysail Setup | Sailboat Story 240

Our sailboat came with a staysail that included a boom. Our preference though, is to keep our foredeck space clear and open so when we headed out to go sailing, we left the boom behind. To make our staysail work "boomless", we rig a temporary sheeting system, go for a test sail, and observe how well the sail behaves. We discover that the staysail works just fine without the boom. Of course, the boat would sail marginally better if the boom were in place, but we're just fine with a slight performance decrease in exchange for maintaining our open deck space. Then there's the added benefit of removing the possibility of being clobbered by a swinging boom on the foredeck. For us, running our staysail boomless and self-tacking is the right move, and we're very pleased with how well the boat sails with the staysail, especially when sailing to windward.

They are not ropes they are lines! The only rope on a sailing vessel is a bell rope. Get with it!

Isn't it interesting how the boat just sails where we point her despite the terminology used? It's almost like it doesn't matter at all. Weird, huh?

When you tie a rope to your boat to attach a block then it's just a rope, not a line, not a halyard, just a rope and when you go to a chandlery to buy the stuff then you'll find it in the ropes section.

@@Sailboatstoryagree! Nothing like sitting at home watching another person sail and feeling the need to criticize wording…call it what you want and enjoy your sail!

Oh my goodness, terminology purity. Well, you might not want to come to Aus. For example, in a boat it is called a Head or Heads, depending on where you come from. Some people called it a bathroom or toilet. Here in Aus, we call it a dunny. Don't make no difference where it is, it's still a dunny. Or, it's a thunder box. Everyone knows what a dunny or thunder box is. In other countries they call a dunny a bathroom. You don't bathe in a bloody dunny for crying out loud. Yuk, that is filthy, but yet, here we are with good ol terminology again, getting in the way. And yep, the boat doesn't give a toss what is tied to the sails. Be they lines or ropes, it will still go forward when there's wind and go nowhere when there's no wind. Great video Guys, I always enjoy watching them, most especially the cartoon. That was a tale on the high seas of horrifying proportions, with a great outcome. Good job Molly!

@@Sailboatstory I’ve also attached a block off of the clew of the staysail and this allows it to kinda self tend back an forth with the port and starboard sheets tied off and then just tension the pressure side for shape in conjunction with your car positioning on the track.

One alternative that you might consider for your loose-footed self-tacking staysail is to put a padeye on the centerline, just forward of the mast. Tie or clip the bitter end of the sheet into the padeye. The sheet runs from the padeye to a block shackled to the clew of the staysail, then back down through a turning block also attached to the padeye, and then out to a second turning block that is outboard and then back to your winch. That gives you the same 2-to-1 sheeting advantage, but allows you to sheet the staysail closer to the centerline. As you said, the main use of your staysail is when you are on the wind, so I would not worry a lot about the leech twist that rig would probably produce when off the wind. You could leave the sheet fully rigged and just unshackle the clew of the staysail when you bring it down. Just an idea. Love your channel, and the high production values of all your videos.

I will try something similar with my Genoa. I want a self tacking genoa. Thanks for good inspiration.

Ben, if the foot of the sail does not extend beyond the mast then a very good way to rig is to run the tack to a block at the base of the mast. It works similar to a loose footed main then and allows you to get as close to the wind as possible. It's like having the boom without actually having the boom, if ya get me.

Nice job on the staysail.. I look forward to seeing how the more permanent arrangement works. (On a purely personal aesthetic note, it always amuses me when people with boats festooned with paddle-boards and fuel drums on the lifelines - sometimes even bicycles! - talk about not wanting to clutter up the foredeck.. 🤣🤣😜 )
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory Год назад
I do see the irony in that statement. The better way to say it would be that we’d like to avoid cluttering up the foredeck any further than it already is with a 14ft waist-high barricade running down the middle. “Festooned” made me giggle. 😆

Just to add my 2 cents. I got rid of the boom added tracks on the cabin top with little 20 winches. I also changed to roller furling on the staysail and already had it on the Jib. I fly a yankee high up on the jib and it works really well I start with the staysail and main and add the yankee when needed. Also about your monitor again just my experience I always wanted one and bought a used one at a boat swap meet. Eventually took it to scanmar to get it rebuilt ended up turning the old one in for a new one as the price to rebuild vs new wasn't that much. I found them really good to work with and am enjoying getting used to the monitor. Thanks again for the great videos really entertaining and fun to watch. Greg SV Prion

That Stay looks to be in fine shape. Less is best where the boom goes. It might be handy on a down wind run though. Not to be a nervous Nancy, but I believe I would add some reinforcement to those cringles. The clew and reefing points are gonna take some hits. The head wouldn't be a bad Idea either. Just me. 🙃

Put a tail block on both padeyes. Run sheets thru both and bend each onto the stays'l clew. This way u will have some control of sail shape & still pretty easy to tack. Ultimately u need a traveler track mounted aft of normal if u want to stay "boomless"...
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory Год назад
We considered exactly that setup before going with this simpler, single sheet, self tacking set up. I’m glad we did as we’re quite happy with it. There’s certainly no need for a traveler to stay boomless as we’ve already demonstrated, but that would allow for more control. We’re happy with the increased performance, reduced heal, and simplicity that we’ve gained with our current set up.
@briansaid1730
@briansaid1730 Год назад
Of course ur happy with your own "far from perfect" idea. I'm suggesting a well proven way to achieve preferred sail shape control (including barber-hauling). And a method that still allows quick conversion to ur primitive "short-term" self-tacking rig in the rare occasion of facing headwinds in a narrows.....
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory Год назад
What we’ve already done is barber haul using our current set up. We simply set the sail, and pop on a barber haul for further adjustment, when needed, and we let that run for longer passages. Simple stuff. No set up is perfect and it’s always a compromise one way or another. What we have works well for us.
@briansaid1730

Any thoughts to whether or not you are have running backstays to counter the pull on the mast at the point of your inner stay? @7:07 it appears like you do have running backstays attached at your second spreader.
