Testing and Reviewing The Vintage Chinese Popcorn Cannon 

I used the alcohol burner with dual wicks that came with my kit. It takes about 10 minutes for me. I still get a lot of unpopped and half popped kernels.

Use a spirit-cooker, most popcorn come with one. why? it burns hotter - and doesnt produce this much residue on your cannon and will take around 10 minutes, depending on your cannon. Additional, even when adding a bit of sugar (not the best idea, makes cleaning a bit harder) or salt into the cannon, it will come out pretty bland. To make it gorgeous: For 100gr of corn in the cannon: Melt 50gr of Sugar in a Pot, until it becomes liquid and slightly brownish, then add one big spoon of butter, stir it on low temperature, until it is a nice mess of caramel - then pour the cannon-popcorn into it, stir it (wihout heat), so that most of the popcorn is coated. As the cannon produces rather roundish popcorn, the coaating will be pretty consistent. Neither good for your health, teeth or diabetes, but pretty yummy.

The "starts with S" - Saccharin? This is sometimes used in China... ubiquitous artificial sweetener, but it's a carcinogen so not recommended. Some of the Chinese websites that sell these sell little packets of "popcorn saccharin". I plan on experimenting with some of the more modern aritificial sweeteners and salt to see if I can't popcorn-cannon a load of "kettle" corn! BTW, you can puff all kind of things like rice etc. Also, I think it would be a fun project to use a gas burner, some kind of power-driven spinning motor, and an electronic pressure gauge to partially automate the process. The attraction is probably the "Boom". :D

I was thinking of buying one but now I see it's not worth it. Complicated, takes a long time to cook, a bit dangerous and the final product almost identical to the microwave and kettle stuff. Thanks for the heads-up!
