In this video I test out OM System`s new 150-600mm F5-6.3 lens at RSPB Lakenheath. I show both stills and video taken using this lens, and give my thoughts on it.
Price of the lens will be £2,399 in the UK (2,699 euros/US Dollars)

Even at 2kg, I reckon this lens will be extremely popular. Yes the Sigma design will annoy a lot of people with the price hike but you can't get this specs anywhere else. OM system has modified it and put Sync IS at 6ev for the long end, if that's true and 1200 at 6 EV, that's even better than the 150-400 pro because with the built in teleconverter, I don't think it will have 6 EV anymore. It has better weather sealing than the Sigma and it works with the two MC teleconverter, you are not getting these features with the Sigma lens alone and you can to 1200mm with m43 instead of a crop in 900mm with either APSC bodies or full frame. OM system knows it and that's why it charge us the premium

That is one of the best comments I have seen. Thanks you. There has been a lot of negative things said about the lens being heavy, and a Sigma lens copy, but as you rightly point out, the Sigma does not have weather sealing, or Sync IS or being able to take the converters. Well said.

Thanks Roger interesting to hear your thoughts on the OM1ii, one to think about going forward possibly. I'm not convinced at all on the rebadged sigma 150-600, it defeats the light & portability attributes of the M43 system for me and its around £700 more expensive than the version for Nikon, Canon etc -However, I'm sure others will love it and adopt it, for now I"ll stick with the 300 f4 pro until my Finance Director supports my expenses claim for the 150-400 😃

Amazon are doing the lens for £849 for Nikon or Canon. That's a gob-smacking difference of £1650. It's pre-order for £2499 for the OM everywhere in the UK. It's a full frame lens optics design so you are carrying around a lot of unused glass it's cropped! I wouldn't mind if they provided a specially designed speedbooster with it so at least you could get the ISO down in the UK light. That about F6.3 to F3.1.

I can not believe OM System priced this lens @ US$ 2600! As noted by everyone that this is a less than $1000 lens. OM systems does not have capability to design own lens no top, does not have skills to negotiate a wholesale price of a $1000 retailed lens (in production for years and for multiple brands)? Just does not make sense for asking $2600 for a third party designed (long time ago), manufactured for lot of brands , and carrying new (not known) brand name lens. I switched from Canon (20+ years) to OM System three years ago, I feel like that I made a mistake.
@rogerhance5883

@@BalvantPatel Part of the reason its expensive is that it has 7 stops of IS. This lens is not for everyone, but it does have advantages.

I had a look at the specification of the Sigma 150-600 Sport, Contemporary and the OM 150-600. These are not the same lenses. The OM lens have one more element (25) than the Sport lens (24). I forgot about how many groups. Most likely the lens is a product improved version of the Sigma Sport lens. As far as weight goes, long lenses will be the same regardless of whether they are full frame or not. Remember that the existing APS-C lenses are relatively short. There is nothing to save by making long APS-C lenses.
@rogerhance5883
@rogerhance5883 5 месяцев назад
There are many differences between the OM System 150-600mm and the Sigma. The Sigma will not give you the amount of IS that the Sigma will. A lot of people who moan about this fail to recognise.

Hi Roger, I enjoy your videos. I have the 100-400, and of course, I realize both it and the 150-600 are based on Sigma designs. But this is still quite impressive. Unlike many, I don't have a problem with OM going to Sigma and licensing these two lens designs. A lot of people don't like the initial price, but, with getting sync stabilization and it had to be adapted to m43, there were going to be cost increases over the Sigma model. What some people are missing, it will be 2/3 of a stop faster than the 300mm with MC20 at 600mm. I also think it will be marginally faster than the 150-400mm with teleconverter to get to 600mm. That's actually quite impressive to think about. It's certainly faster than the 100-400 through the 150-400 range. Looking forward to your next videos.

@TrimmerCognition
@TrimmerCognition 6 месяцев назад
Yes, they have added some features which will of course incur costs. What you haven't mentioned is quite how much more they are charging for this privilege, considering they have done zero development on the lens optics. The other issue is weight. Yes, it's faster than other Olympus offerings at the long end. But just look at the weight difference, which is a by product of this lens being originally designed for a full frame sensor. This is a good lens. There is a reason why it's been so popular on other systems. People aren't arguing that point. It's the execution by OM System. In the good old days of Olympus, I have no doubt they would have designed a lens with all the above benefits while also being at a size and weight much more suited to the system. For that, I would be more than happy to pay a significant premium. The 150-400mm is a prime example of their innovative designs in this field. What the current release shows is that OM System clearly have no interest in following that example.
@tarjei99
@tarjei99 6 месяцев назад
@rogerhance5883 It looks like people compares the price of the lens with the cheapest Sigma version. I don't know if that is appropriate. And they complain about the weight which is pretty close to the 150-400. Around 300 gram difference. A normal bag of Coffee where I live. People comment as if 2kg is heavy for a 150-600mm zoom. Weather sealing and perhaps a change of glass in a lens will add weight. Given the complaints, I start wondering if the rumour is true about someone paying for people to rubbish other camera brands. Originally, it was Canon that was the target.

@rogerhance5883 6 месяцев назад
@@tarjei99 You make a very good comment.
@TrimmerCognition
@TrimmerCognition 5 месяцев назад
@@tarjei99 Why is the price not comparable if the glass is the same? The L-mount version of the Sigma lens is already weather sealed, so your weight justification isn't valid. You can buy a Canon R7 and 200-800mm lens for less money and less weight than the OM-1 and 150-600mm. So I have to ask, how much is OM System paying you? I love my Olympus E-M1X and 300mm F4 and I will continue to use them - this release doesn't change that. It just makes me sad for the future of the brand.

Thanks for making this video. Could you please test the image quality with teleconverters? I have a feeling that since this is just a rebranded Sigma 150-600mm (it's almost identical to the Sony E-mount version) and it was originally designed for use with full frame cameras, it might not be very sharp when used with teleconverters. Also, is the stabilization good enough to shoot video from a monopod instead of a tripod? I had the privilege of borrowing a 150-400mm in November and I found that it handled very well for still photographs on a monopod, although I didn't test it with video.
@rogerhance5883

Hi Keith. Thanks for commenting. I have tested the lens out with the 1.4 converter, but not the 2x. I think there is a VERY SLIGHT loss in quality with the 1.4, but its only very marginal, and I have to blow it up on my screen to see it. In the next video, I show video footage of a Kestrel in flight, taken hand held. I was amazed how good it came out. That video will be realeased on Saturday, so watch out for it. I agree about the lens being very similar to the Sigma 150-600mm. They look very much alike.

@@rogerhance5883 Yes, I would be changing from Nikon D850 & 500. Whilst I'm happy with the quality, I recently bought an OM-5 for travel photography when cycling/hiking and I'm so impressed by the quality from M4/3 as well as the comparatively ultra-lightweight of the system. Add to that the enhanced features and functionality for wildlife and landscape it would seem to make a system change, and upgrade to OM-1 Mk2, an easy decision. Of course there will be a significant financial penalty now as the new 'Z' mount system has added to the depreciation of the 'F' mount system. Of course there is also a technology advancement of about 8 years to take into consideration. So, it is videos like yours (I've watched a few now and will watch more) that really help. Thanks again!

Saw it as the hope for lighter gear that could capture birds at a distance. Then the lenses grew heavier with each iteration and ... so did the prices. This new one looks great, but, looks like it's much too heavy. I've moved on to Canon's RF100-500mm with an R7 and, from a quick google, I bet I'm carrying around about 1kg less metal; but a similar price point and similar total resolution to photograph tiny little shy birds. New lens I want! A couple of years ago I sold my 100-400 f5-6.3 to fund the 300 f4, I have been rethinking that decision. Now that the 150-600 is out, I might want to get that first. I love the 300 for it's total sharpness, period. But having to zoom with your feet gets old quickly. What I like about the 150-600, is the same focal range as the 100-400, but with Sync IS added on for a bonus. Some will say this is a reworked Sigma but as Thomas Stirr says, SO WHAT! It would fill my needs for the price and performance. In my post retirement dream world, I would have the 100-400 for it small size, and the 150-600 Oly "bigma" for it's reach. I know cost wise I would be getting near the 150-400 f4.5 dream lens, but having two for the price of one is my way to go! And BTW, the Sigma 150-600, has only 6 special glass elements for the FF cameras, this however has 14 special glass elements, and also has been engineered to "talk' to the OM cameras effortlessly, and the features are amazing, down to the lens creep options, to the shoulder strap option etc etc etc.. Also, I had the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 which was heavy, so this is a 'little" lighter, and I could hand hold the Nikon for a bit. This would also complement the 40-150 f2.8 for sure.

HI Alan, In hindsight, I should have shown the new lens extended when comparring the sizes. Also, I should have pointed out that the 150-600mm is actually slightly heavier than the 150-400mm. The only time that I notice that the 150-400mm is slightly sharper, is when I am cropping into the picture by large amounts. @@anupamsadhukhan5620 It depends on the `type` of bird photography you do. If you work from a small hide, a zoom is by far the best option. If walking around a reserve, the fixed focal lenght is fine. I would say the 300mm F4 is very slightly sharper than the 150-600mm. Having said that, the 150-600mm is a very good lens. Hi Aron, Thanks for commenting. The lens will work with the EM1X, but it would be a lot better with an OM1. I would hang on for a short while because as people start to upgrade to a OM1mkII, there may be somegood secondhand OM1`s about. You should be able to buy at a reasonable price. The new lens is good, so it may be a while before that comes down in price. Hope that helps.

Here is the hard question. Would this lens replace the 150-400 f4.5 Pro which I happen to own one. The weight is similar and this lens has even more reach than the 4.5 Pro lens. Whoever in the field of bird photography knows, reach means everything, an extra 200mm does make a difference and that’s without putting any MC converter on. Would be good to see a comparison between those two lens and see whether it is justified to buy one more lens or replace it and save some cash for the OM-1 mark 2😅
@rogerhance5883
@rogerhance5883 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for commenting Ryan. Its much appreciated. Its not a difficult question at all. The 150-400mm wins easily. Although the 150-600mm is a great lens, the advantages of the 150-400mm out weigh the extra reach. If you put a 1.4 on the 150-400mm, and then engade the 1.25 extender, you have a massive reach. I certainly will not be relacing my 150-400m with the new lens. It was sent to me to try out for a few weeks to get some feedback. Stick with your 150-400mm. Its amazing.
