It is time to get the heat loving tomatoes planted up in the Greenhouse and move the Chillies and Bell Peppers from our kitchen shelving to the Greenhouse, too. We had an incredibly warm and productive day. Everything is settling in nicely now.

Those tomatoes look so healthy maiju ! I'm a week behind you with the tomatoes. Next week for sure. Great update. Danny 🌱

Thank you, Danny 😊💚🌿 The tomato plants have been on the greenhouse shelving since April, potting them up in between made a big difference. For once my tomatoes are not leggy 😁 I always used to have them too spindly, like the chilli plants, because I kept them in the house for too long and not enough sunlight... Happy gardening! Best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿

Oh you've been taking better care of your toms than I have 🙈 Also not burying string this year but so pleased to have got the plants in the ground. I am excited!!

I don't think I did anything particularly different than you....perhaps the individual pots were larger than the space in your cells.... but otherwise, they've been just sitting in the greenhouse since sometime in April 😊 As you saw from the last years clip, they do grow so, so big 🫣😀 and I hope they're not too close to each other. Yep, happy they're in the ground 🥰

They're so funny 😆 they would have no fear what so ever and easily get in the way of the showel when digging 🐓💚 Like cats....and sometimes they do give me a scare when they don't even move out of the way of the lawnmower 🫣

Fab update Maiju ❤ I live your polytunnel, geez hot hot hot! Can't wait to see how your crops grow in the polytunnel. Your coloured peppers and other crops looked fantastic last year. Enjoy the sun shine 😊

Thank you, Linda 🤗 Very kind of you💚🌿 If the temperature in the greenhouse was hot, then the heat of those peppers was hot-hot-hot-hot-hot..........🤣🤣 this year I'm growing milder chillies and only a few hot-hot-hot ones 😂😊💚🌿

Hi Maiju, I remember when you where building the greenhouse in your kitchen it's been a great investment and so much planning in the placing of the tomatoes, chilies and peppers this year.

Thank you, Ady 😊💚🌿Great times, getting the value out of the greenhouse, the prices have risen so much already, but assembling it ourselves saved us at least a thousand euros 💚🌿 I bet I have still too many plants packed in there, but once the table is out of the way, it should get easier to walk amongst them 😊💚🌿

ooooh how exciting! 😍 I didn't know that dwarf beans can be planted with tomatoes! I've been wondering where to plant mine 👀 I think I may go out and plant them right now as they are desperate to get out of their little cell trays! 🤣
@spudsandroses
@spudsandroses 3 месяца назад
😊 Hi Seren 🤓 Yes, beans and tomatoes can go together (any legume family plants and tomatoes 🍅) as they will fix nitrogen in the soil that the tomatoes can use for their own healthy growth 💚 I only thought of this combination as a way of finding a spot for the purple French Beans in the greenhouse. I've never been successful with them outside and alongside the Tom's was the only option left if I wanted to grow them in a more sheltered location 😊 Absolutely give it a go if you have plants that need to be planted out 😀 they will at least still be a great companion plant for tomatoes if nothing else 😊💚🌿

Hi Maiju, its a busy time of year on the plot, I was surprised you didn't put the string under the tomato, I always do a loop on the string then put the plant on top, then cover, I'm looking forward to see how you do your stringing up, take care ,Steve Colwell
@spudsandroses
@spudsandroses 3 месяца назад
Thank you, Steve 😊💚🌿 Yes, no string underneath, I think its just a habit 😄 Less obstacles to manoeuvre around while adding plants when the tomatoes are small in size, I suppose 😂 I will be adding a jute string later and as it will be above the ground, I don't need to worry it being a natural string 😊💚🌿

Hi there dear, If you have polycarbonate for your greenhouse then with the milder conditions where you are you should have no problem growing citrus. I had a 3 bay polycarbonate in Scotland and one I had full on oranges grapefruit, satsumas and 2 lemons as well as grape vines under the eaves between the bays. Your peppers are well ahead of mine. Since I put them out 2 weeks ago we have struggled to get above 4 c at night, so they don't like it one bit. They look as if they are just showing a bit of life. Put a couple of Marigolds between your toms as they are good at keeping the white fly down.

Hi Robert 😀 Thank you 😊 Yes, the Tagetes are going in with the tomatoes, I want to add basil and red spring onion, too 💚 Being able to grow citrus sounds amazing 😍 I'm not ready for that challenge yet 😅, let me practice more with common veggies 😄 We're back to 14C and plenty of rain.... but all is slowly growing still 😊💚🌿

@@spudsandroses Yes have seen all the rain forecast and more to come over the weekend, as usual on a bank holiday. Still struggling at night here4 AGAIN last night but sunny and warm by day 75, but not worth a dam if we get 39 again tonight. Although forecast is 54-57 so will see in the morning when I go down. Citrus are very easy to grow, practically look after themselves. Was my first time in Scotland, but they did that well I had to sell some to regular customers as had so many. The plants I bought from a nursery in Dorset cost me about £30 each, I get the same plants here for5 euro or £5.

What a lovely video Maiju. I can’t wait for the summer crop jungle take over in a couple of months. It is so exciting isn’t it? Your September harvest last year was mammoth. Do you preserve a lot of your produce? Have a fabulous week. 😊

@spudsandroses 3 месяца назад
Thank you, Clare 😊💚🌿 It is just amazing how jungle-like it looks by August 🫣 I don't preserve as much as I would love, to stretch the value out of the harvests, but really it is down to the time available v. the time it takes to preserve and then the space to store etc. I do freeze and dehydrate and have made chutneys 😊💚🌿

Hey Maiju, lovely video, as always! What you said towards the end, about growing without chemicals made me ask this. From what I saw in your videos, what you have around you are pastures, not fields. But may be you have some experiences, or some of your Irish viewers do. I share a border with a field, looks like they planted some sort of grain there this year. And... I still feel like crying thinking about it... they came one of the Sundays (19th May)! middle of the day! lovely sunny weather, but it was windy (7m/s)... and they sprayed the field with chemicals. The wind was blowing in our direction, and I could actually smell it even before I saw the tractor. We sheltered in the house, and closed all the doors and windows (again, on a beautiful sunny Sunday, so disappointing), but obviously I couldn't do anything about my raised beds. This is so frustrating! I know I wont be able to stop them, but I wonder if you, or anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with that... I know in other countries farmers are not allowed to spray during the day, as that's when the pollinators are active... also, can they spray on Sundays?!!!!... also, I think the strength of wind should be a factor and if its blowing into the populated area. And of course, zero commination, so I have no idea what they used and what the grace period is... so now I need to wash my own produce in vinegar and baking soda. This is my first growing season in co. Wexford. So so so disappointing!!! It even beats the slurry they sprayed last year on the last hot week of the year in September, and they just left it there without turning it over. I was thinking to contact county council, or even to make a complaint, but the last thing I want is to start some sort of a war with whoever is cultivating this land (they are renting). We are growing a hedge on that side, but its only small now, and no hedge will stop the the chemical drift anyway. Ok, rant over.

@spudsandroses 3 месяца назад
Hi Justyna, very sorry to hear about your experience 💚😕This could feel very frustrating for you indeed, and I can understand it. Ive been in similar situation, when seeing native hedges being cut down by farmers during the nesting season, witnessed slurry being spread over the ditches next to a river (which I did report), but unfortunately I don't have any solution for you on this. As you say, you don't want to be considered a ''Karen'' or destroying a relationship with your neighbours. We do not have any food crops being grown around us, only silage that gets sprayed with fertilizers, lime and slurry. None of them are pleasant, but we are in the middle of the countryside. All of it gets done regardless of the day or hours..... Given the time of the year, perhaps what was spread on your neighbouring field was a fertilizer, rather than a herbicide? I would still consider to query at your local council about what is allowed to be sprayed, especially when you're growing food crops next door and are concerned about your own health. After that it becomes a situation of gathering evidence, this would all need to be very much black-and-white. Hopefully there is a positive answer to your concerns. You have 2 days before the local elections 😉 Best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿

@@spudsandroses Thank you so much, Maiju! You are so kind. I think I will reach out to the Wexford CoCo and see if there are any guidelines that should be followed. And yeah, I have no idea what they sprayed. I just know it was a liquid with a chemical smell. I wonder how much it costs to rent out this field, instead of that farmer hehe. Probably loads, but one can dream 🙂. Oh, and I finally have my polycarbonate greenhouse. I went for Strong after all!! Like you said, it was a project and a half, but we did it!! The guys from the company were not available to install until July. I still need to finish the inside, hopefully this weekend, but everything has been growing in pots in there already for few weeks. All the best to you, Maiju!!!

The ‘jungle’ in your greenhouse looked beautiful to me. It’s probably hard to move around though. That seems like a large amount of vegetables for one family. Do you have a surplus? Another great video.

Thank you 😊 Sry, if I came across like I don't like the fullness of the foliage 😀, I do. It's hard to visualise it while everything is small still and empty looking 😊 The pots won't stay scattered in the walkways, I'll need to get the table outside and that will give me more room. I will have surplus, not with Bell peppers, but with chilies and tomatoes. I will freeze or dehydrate, sauce any extra 😊💚🌿

Lovely video 👍, nice bit of relaxing planting out, all looks great 😍. Hopefully we get plenty more of that sunshine. Am growing borage for the first time this year, do they usually need staking? 🌱
@spudsandroses
@spudsandroses 3 месяца назад
Thank you so much 😊💚🌿 I'm ready to move to Spain 😂 To escape the midges and get more sunshine 😍 Borage can benefit from staking as it grows tall and can semi-flop over. The leaves are prickly enough to irritate if passing by and it is at the walkway area, but mostly I don't stake them. I have staked this one in the greenhouse though as I want it to stay upright as much as possible. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it living there all summer long, but once its producing seeds I could collect and it stays trouble free for me, I'll leave it 😊💚🌿
