Back in my younger years, I picked up a black powder cap and ball pistol, the nipple was filthy, mutilated, and in need of replacement. I obtained the spare nipple but didn't have the appropriate tool for removing it. So, I went to the local gun store. The owner was talking to a lady at the counter when he asked me what I needed. The incredulous look on her face when I said I needed a nipple wrench was unforgettable. Equal to that was the look of confusion on her face when he responded that they were on the back wall.

You need three conditions for that to happen: 1. Aim for the scope and hit it or luckily hit it 2. Have the shooter aim straight at you as well, at the same elevation or negligible elevation difference. 3. Be faster at pulling the trigger than the guy looking towards you and ready to do you in. It can happen , just very unlikely in the chaos of the warzone. One in a lifetime chance.

One question just occurred to me watching this and maybe you've heard it discussed. The assassination was one part of the conspiracy so was not spur of the moment. It was planned so why would Booth use a derringer why not a Colt Army for example. I have grave doubts there were metal detectors at Fords Theater that night and Booth was well known there being a famous actor so bringing in a larger revolver would not be a problem. Had the derringer gone click instead of Boom then history would be vastly different. I saw on here,You Tube, an old 1950s episode of the tv show "I've Got a Secret" The guest on there had a secret the panel had to guess. His secret was that he was at Fords Theater the night of the assassination although he was about 4 years old then. Dont know if you have seen it but there is a photograph strongly believed to be Lincoln taken on his death bed. While photographers were barred there was a short time frame when a photograph was possible. Also the photograph shows great swelling around the right eye.

If he's using Pyrodex (which is easier to find than real black powder) I'm not surprised he got a bit of lag. Real black powder ignites much more easily than Pyrodex, which is also why you can't use Pyrodex in a flintlock.

The physician for Lincoln actually inserted his finger into the wound channel, pushing the bullet further into the brain. If this shooting happened today, he would likely survive, albeit with brain damage. (A career ender for sure) Sick, I know. I have been an expert witness on a muzzleloader death before. Never underestimate their power. Cap and ball is great, But I am partial to Flintlocks myself. As a combat medic and nurse, wound ballistics fascinates me and always has. I would like to see more demos with muzzleloaders on the ballistic dummies.

Not so much of a career-ender these days - John Fetterwoman and the current ex-Vice President come to mind

Surely, he would be more likely to die since they wouldn't be using an underpowered small barreled black powder pistol.

@@WayStedYou And their understanding of sanitation and safe procedures was very lacking compared to today. Lincoln might have survived but only if he had a strong immune system and a lot of luck. Infection was as much a killer as severe wounds.

@@Christianos_Theophile Indeed, Ronald Reagan's Administration was completely ran by the first lady for the last 2 years of his presidency. He had severe Alzheimer.

I guess I'll be that guy. The muzzleloader death was a deer, right?
