The best Chain is VCR into a DMR-ES10 into a TBC-1000. The reason you'd daisy chain a DMR-ES10 into the mix is it fixes the tearing at the top of an image you get on worn tapes. (Those also need recaps!)

Full-frame TBCs 😊 Though these units aren't the absolute "best", they are perfect for DIY home video capture. In these units specifically, brightness reduction is the most common issue I see as far as getting a quality capture. Replacing the electrolytic caps is step 1. If there is a brightness difference between the two inputs, checking the resistors and smd caps on the I/O side of the board would be next. Most of the time, over/ under voltage is the root cause of the malfunction issues. A scope is needed to really see what's going on under the hood.

Nice video! Can you tell me which video chips the TBC-1000 uses on that board you showed? I believe that board has a chip that captures the video and sends it into a memory and then a second one that reads the memory and sends the video out. Thanks!

Would this help a lightgun used on a Sony BVM with a Sega Saturn for instance?

A waveform monitor would have helped a lot in showing this stuff and confirming it works. What a TBC is doing is replacing the signal with a stable reference signal sometimes the signal is noisy as I show here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iorwEtqHa-Y.html and the capture hardware can't lock on to the timing or read the color burst of a signal. By replacing that signal we get stable playback. As shown we also can retime signals which is important if the timing between two signals is different. This was very necessary in days of reel to reel video tape as all the various formats had wildly different timing and no way to sync the cheaper formats to the more expensive.
