And when you do see the corners without the hood- that's DCI mode on the GH4 which is wider than UHD. The corners are cropped out when shooting standard UHD 4K.
So, the key to this lens is shoot in 4k, get the power cable, and get the B4 to M43 adapter. Man, this might be the way to go for me. Seems way more practical for a video shooter.
Technically correct, but the 1/2" bayonet mount is much more akin to the B4 mount than it is to the B3 mount, which was also bayonet. So for the sake of discussion- and simplicity, I've called it a B4 mount- and the seller of the adapter also called it a B4 mount in his listing, So searching for anything else wouldn't find the adapter.
I use a 2/3 Fuji 14 x2 lens with Kenko x2 pro doubler on a Canon 70d with B4 adapter and it is awesome! Only problem is high zoom can get a little bit shaky and jittery with out built in image stabilizer, also lens coller helps to center and sure up weight..
Hi Antony, this is Carlos Eduardo from Brazil. His videos are one of the few that show a B4 1/2 lens working with an adapter. I got an adapter for B4 2/3 lenses, but I couldn't get it for B4 1/2. Your link to the adapter no longer works. Could you help me find this adapter? If it was B4 1/2 for EF or E mount it would be better, but nowadays, any type will do. Thanks in advance!
Oh, my goodness this may be the way to go for me. I've been buying all these Canon FD photo lenses. This B4 lens would cover all those focal lengths, and I would have zoom.
The difference is that the B4 lens is a compromise- it's designed for a much smaller sensor and you're stretching the image out to cover a much larger sensor. As such, it's not as crisp as a FD photo lens. If you want photo lens crispness and servo lens capability, both Canon and Fujinon have both developed Cine Servo Zooms for APSc sized sensors. These can be rented on an as needed basis. The purchase price is commensurate with quality.
Great Video... I just bought a couple of Canon PH15 x 7B 1/2' video lenses off of Eby. Not sure whether to adapt them to my Nikon D7200, or may be buying a new GH5. Glad to see I'm not the only one to consider this option.
Can you provide more information on how you powered this lens and any other "gotchas" that may arise from using it? Have you tried it "stripped" of the power zoom? Also, is the gearing the same pitch (0.8 pitch) as that usually used with follow focus setups?
This lens comes nowhere near to resolving UHD, especially with the extender, so it's pointless to use it to shoot UHD. Sure, there are broadcast lenses for UHD, but those are so expensive, it makes no sense to use them on a GH4.
because of my inexperience with theses lenses, I didn't know that I bought a canon 1/2" lens and bought the wrong adapter!(2/3" to m4/3 adapter)....damn why is the 1/2" to m4/3 adapter so expensive?
Just a dumb amateur question, do you need to shoot in 4k to achieve am image in hd when using those old lenses ? Im just starting to get the idea why you dont see these parfocal lenses on modern dslr cams more often
@@maxmustardman298 they make parfocal lenses for modern dslr cameras but they cost between 2k and 10k per lens or more so people use the b4 lenses because they don’t cost as much money to get
I have a Kern 14mm to 115mm super 16 lens which is a little large that 2/3 inch when compared to digital sensors. So bigger than 1/2 inch. This of course means theres less chance of vignetting. But unfortunately it's Bayonet mount and I have been unable to find an adaptor. Sure would rock on my Gh4 as it is an electric servo zoom.
There is a colour vignete distortion everywhere around your frame, look at the tree at your left side and right side. Only building behind you has no distortion. rest of the frame has.
Zharmane VEVO For some reason I couldn't "reply" to your comment, so I'll reply here. The depth of the flange of the 2/3" and 1/2" are dramatically different so you can't use a 1/2" lens on a 2/3" mount. Also, lens charts are available many places online, including my articles on Streaming Media Producer, so you can research what you purchase before you click "buy." www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=80668&PageNum=2
As a 3D broadcast title animator. And for hobby/side job looking at some cool lensens for my gh5 I have to say that 3D intro is so so sooo amazing oldschool hahaha mann.. if you ever need a new 3D logo I’ll make it for you cheers from the Netherlands (btw love these eng lenses. At work they use them allot still and it gives a bit of a real tv vibe. Hope to some day can re-create that with my GH5 in some spare time. Cheers from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Not for sure if anyone asked. Regarding this lens adapter or any lens adapter for the matter. I have a first generation 1997 Canon XL1 lens it's a Canon video zoom lens AF and M zoom lens with options for optical stabilization on /off also ND filter on / off. zoom range is 5.5-88mm 1.6-2.6 What would be the results if this adapter would mount to my GH4? I'm currently researching now and when I find an answer I'll definitely post a how to hack a canon xl1 xl2 zoom lens to MFT cameras. Please advise. Atlanta GA USA
The zoom is internal, so it needs a hot shoe to provide power for internal zoom, internal iris, stabilization, etc. Without the power and camera control, those features wouldn't work. So you'd have a manual zoom lens, not a servo- which is the point of using a B4 lens. Also, the 1/3 sensor of the XL1 is minescule compared to the much larger M43 sensor. The B4 lenses are mostly 2/3 lenses, (not 1/3) and it's only because of the lens' doubler that they cover the M43 sensor. The 1/2" lens only covers because the GH4's 4K is a crop of the M43 sensor. The 1/3" lens, with no internal doubler, and no internal power, is a whole lot of work for not the right solution.
Hello, I have a question to ask. I have a Fujinon S16x7.3BRM-SD camera lens and I try to fit it on my Canon EOS 750D. I put a B4-EOS adapter and a Viltrox C-AF 2X TELEPLUS to double the focal length. The problem is that the picture is completely fuzzy. Do you have any idea to fix this problem? Thank you in advance.
@@IEBATechThoughts Without wanting to make any precise adjustments, when I turn the backfocus setting ring, it does not really change. I will try again. Thanks anyway.
I just tested the link, it's working (I had to add an exception to the security settings on my browser) and they do have the 1/2" lens adapter for $260.
@@riciorozzey1739 You're going to have a very tiny video area in the center of your sensor. A 1/2" lens, WITH a doubler, does not even cover a whole Micro 4/3 sensor, which is smaller than an APSc sensor, and a lot smaller than a full frame sensor. Even if the 5D mkIV shot 4K, the are covered by the video might not even have enough pixels for HD.
I'm an EX3 Owner, but starting to look around for my next camera... this was quite informative, although from my days in sales at Band Pro (2005-2009), I seem to recall (just for nomenclature purposes), that B4 refers to 2/3" ONLY, and that there is a different name for the 1/2" mount...
David Rosner Possible, but even Canon itself does not make such a differentiation between 2/3", 1/2" and 1/3" lenses on their lens charts. . www.usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/standard_display/bctv_tools/bctv_accessories/bctv_access_lensmodel
+Trevor Broadbent Use the charts I include in my article to determine the sensor size your lens is made for, and find the appropriate adapter for whichever type of camera you have. www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/Editorial/Featured-Articles/Adapting-Servo-Zoom-Lenses-for-Smooth-Zooming-DSLR-Production-Part-1-80668.aspx
I'm in if it's any better in low light over the Lumix 12-35 2.8 Please, please do a real life low light comparison (best image from both lenses). Thank you!
"better" is subjective. If you want to talk about a parfocal servo zoom lens that doesn't adjust the iris while you zoom- while you record, the B4 lens wins hands down. If you mean sharper edge to edge with in camera correction for porthole and wide angle distortions, corrections for chromatic aberrations, sharpening and more, then the Lumix lens wins, hands down.
Curious to see how this lens or similar lens would look with blackmagic design studio micro 4k, do you think this lense would work with a NEX6 with an adapter
I just bought a Sony 1/2" to E mount adaptor for $55 on eBay. I plan to see how it works with my Canon KH21ex5.7 2x HD lens on my A7sII. I am a little worried about how much digital zoom (crop) I will have to enable to not get vignetting! Will post a video when the adapter arrives.
I've used 1/2" C-mount lenses on the GH2 in ETC and they covered. But I've not used the GH4 in ETC mode with the 1/2" lens. And I don't think the 1/3 will cover even in ETC mode.
I personally will be investing in a 28-300 3.5-5.6 w metabones speedbooster on a GH4 equating to a 56-600 2.8 L all I need is a wide, might go with 10-22 canon 3.5 or similar. Thoughts?
I’m using a Fujinon SD ENG B4 lens on my Sony A6300 and getting horrible chromatic aberration on most spots of light. Tried fixing in post using AE to moderate success, but it’s tedious. Not sure if anyone has found an adapter with a corrective lens to bring the white light back together for modern single ccd/cmos sensors, as compared to the 3 ccd cameras they were designed for.
Abel Cine sells a "corrective" adapter, but at last check it was well over $1,200. Alternatively, you can use large sensor cine servo zooms with no CA. But they are more expensive than a lens made 30 to 40 year ago for a sensor a fraction of the size that you are using now.
IEBAcom Thanks for the suggestion. $1200 for the adapter will cost more than the lens and rig setup. But I’m still really enjoying the ergonomics of the setup and familiarity of servo zoom and manual focusing.
hI Anthony i have a Canon YH 12x4.8 1/2'' + extender for Panasonic camcorder.Do you think it should work with a GH4? But how can i provide power to the lens?Or you just connect it by an adapter? Thanks
+giuseppe ferro Depending on whether it's a 1/2" or 2/3" lens, you get the appropriate adapter. With a full 2x doubler, it should cover 4K (which is a crop of the M43 sensor) if it's a 2/3" lens then it covers full M43 sensor for HD as well.
I don't have an AF100, but it is a M43 camera. It uses the full sensor so a wide lens like this will vignette on it. Also, it's HD only, so the only thing you can do to try and save the image is crop to 720p in post to reduce the vignetting you would get from a 1/2" lens on the AF100.
Yes, the B4 lenses can be used in a fully manual mode. Using them on M43 cameras, you can only power the zoom. There is no iris communication to the lens so that remains manual. Focus is always manual.
on his website ieba.com, he has articles explaining how he rigged a power pack for the servo cable i found this fotodiox product that was recently released that does the same thing www.fotodioxpro.com/fotodiox-pro-turbopack-9000-dc12v-powerpack-for-b4-lens-servo-power-cables.html
It doesn't. It covers the 4K crop of the M43 sensor in the GH4. The 4K image area is NOT the whole M43 sensor. Many people don't realize that. This lens will vignette when shooting HD and using the whole M43 sensor.
Like this? www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12v-to-6-Pin-Hirose-Cable-AF100-GH2-Power-B4-2-3-Fujinon-Canon-Nikon-WY27-/162084864327?hash=item25bd02c147:g:SScAAOSwNsdXSKvL
@@CharlezRichard It worked on my JVC LS300, but not ever lens is the same, and the size of the circle of light changes through the zoom range. And not ever APSc sensor size is the same either.
Look up the model number- PH8x4.4. PH is a half inch lens. It's a half inch adapter. If I put a 2/3" adapter on there the lens would essentially be a macro lens because it'd be about a centimeter too far from the sensor. But I appreciate your comment. :)
I think you're wrong, that cannot be a 2/3rd inch lens not at that focal length and that size. The 2/3rd inch lens at that focal and that size, impossible. I've only been doing video for 40 yrs and own a few 2/3rd and 1/2 lenses.
Yeah, any Canon lens with a model name that starts with PH means "Studio/Field Lens for 1/2". I have a pdf file decoding model names because I shop these lenses.
@@SnoozeIRTL What about Canon "YH". i recently got Canon YH18x6.7 KRS IX12 1/2" Zoom Lens and I have issues connecting it to the bmpcc4k. it acs as a macro lens. The doubler just makes the circle of light wider. It's not "supposed to remove" anything. Also, this is a 1/2" lens, not a 2/3" lens, so the circle is distinctly smaller.
Steve Jackson Yes, I have. This is an IF lens. My other B4 lens is an IF lens. IF means the front element doesn't rotate, and typically they have a rectangular lens hood, as this one does.
Steve Jackson Look up that model on ebay and you'll see it's supposed to have a cable. You can remove the grip and open it to seek out the zoom motor power if you are electrically inclined.
