Remove the top bearing on the Z axis and make sure your alignment is right! A lot of people have done this after experiencing layer shifts only to find that the threaded rod is not in line with the bracket. The fix is to realign the bracket up top to match the position of the threaded rod where it meets the bearing.
Seems like a lot of RU-vidrs have issues with semi-assembled printers not arriving properly assembled. Going over all the screws, belts, and rollers is a must.
i've seen it on so many things. Even furniture parents have bought. I got tools and what not. So i can check everything. Funny how many problems i find with brand new things being over tightened or loose. Just took apart a desktop fan i have that after a cleaning starting take a while to start up. Turned out the fan blades had gotten shifted down the housing rod. So before it would drag and slow down and my cleaning nudged it far enough to make it snag. I moved it up a considerable amount and now it spins even faster then the exact other one parents got later on and far more efficiently.
Truly fantastic pumpkin! I just ordered this as my first printer. Your video has given me a lot of hope that I can eventually get some incredible prints when I get it dialed in well
That's one Great Pumpkin, if you brought it out to a very sincere pumpkin patch, on Halloween night, when the moon is full, the Great Pumpkin will rise out of the field and bestow upon you gifts and toys..... Maybe next year. ;-) #peanuts
Hello, CHRIS here. I purchased my new Tevo Tornado a few days back and since I haven’t seen it do or try anything BUT damage itself. All tests were just scratching the green plate. I was adjusting the bed assuming it was that,... nope. I then thought the nozzle was clogged. I took it apart and cleaned it as well and replaced the nozzle with the extra that came inside. It started to come out nice and neat. Popped in the SD card to test print and then just scratch, scratch, scratch like a chalkboard. I said maybe it’s the green bed skin. People take there’s off on Videos. Googoned it real clean. Only to see it get scratched just like the skin. I’m at a loss for words. Wife and kids are dying just to see the technology work! This is a kit,... so assuming it’s a dud would be dumb since parts can be replaced and such as long as I find the problem right? Well I need help!!! I’ll be happy just to see it try doing a boat and coming out blobby,... just do something other then scratch the surface. Ohh I started off with PETG not PLA or ABS. Please suggestions,... I wouldn’t wanna buy anoth printer that just works out the box, cuz everyone LOVES THERES!!! Can I be in the club. I think I’m tearing with all the work I’ve done and obtained nothing. Ok enough talk I’ll be patient for any response and or help. I’ll even throw in my cell if anyone asks if you think that may be faster. PLEASE
Great review Joe! Smoothers will take care of all the artefacts and salmon skin that you have encountered. Thanks for taking the time to do all these tests and share with the community. Thumbs up from The Looking Glass!!!
Digging up this old review because I remember you talking about the artifact in the Benchy at the top of the side arches. I printed a 250% Benchy on my Ender 2 over the weekend and that artifact is more pronounced. In fact, it actually happens over 4 layers where the print steps out over 2 layers then steps back. I looked at the recent 100% Benchy I printed and it is there as well, only barely visible. So, it's either an issue in the model or with Simplify 3D.
Without CR10 there would be no Tevo Tornado and the low price that comes with it. I'm still sticking with my CR10 but I appreciate the competition. Just hope that someone out there has plans for an enclosure upgrade for CR10, so that I could print ABS with it. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for your review. I have a CR-10 Mini but the bed shorted out and I have gotten zero response from Creality support after three emails. May be time to switch to Tevo Tornado. BTW, since this review is 2years old, can you tell me how your AKRacing chair has held up? I'm also in the market for a chair and the AK chairs have been behind a couple of RU-vidrs. I've had a bad experience with a pleather chair which began peeling within 2 years of purchase, so I'm a bit weary. Many chair mfgs don't warranty the covers in the fine print, lol.
Thanks for your review. I hesitated for a long time between the CR10S and the Tornado, I chose the Tornado and I'm waiting for the delivery. I'm already printing with an Ultimaker2 and a Prusa M201 which I have a hard time tweaking the settings (my Benchy is a horror all shifted), I hope that the Tornado will be the height of my expectations. Have you test smoother to reduce artefacts ?
Resonance is due to the 8825 drivers -- get some TL-Smoothers for this printer, they should either swap the drivers, steppers or include TL-Smoothers with the printer
I have a Tornado on order with a claimed ship date of 11/20. I subsequently saw your review of the Anycubic I3 Mega. It appeared that the I3 was producing significantly better quality prints. I still have time to cancel the Tevo. My question is: apart from greater volume, is there any reason to prefer the Tevo over the Anycubic? Which would you recommend? Great videos, BTW.
Excellent Review as always your tests, and time spent on these reviews is definately noticed and much better than most. I bet screws are not tight on any of the TEVOs they are assembling them as fast as they can probably because they are so far oversold .They have no stock almost anywhere, I have had one on order for weeks at GB along with a Little Devil. The price on both dropped again yesterday ! Meanwhile my CR10s are working away at least.
Thanks for the review! If I get this printer, it will be my first foray into 3D, so you're helping me learn about the technology. Question: Right now the thing of greatest interest to me is making a custom instrument face for car or boat dashboards. What I need is to print the numbers and tic marks with a TOTALLY opaque ink, so when backlit, you'll see the graphics in white (or some color) and the background will be pitch black, no ugly glow. I've tried ink-jet, laser and professional laser at staples and the results are awful. I thought maybe if I add some thickness via a 3D printer I might get it dark enough. But I don't think the resolution will be good enough to make good quality graphics. Any ideas?
With all the torque and g-forces at play.... It might be a good idea, to use some LOCTITE purple or blue. To keep the screws / bolts and nuts in place !
the screws not tightened is by design, would they have been tightened and someone dropped the box during shipping it could warp the parts. Shipping with the screws not tightened reduces the damage when dropped, because it allows the vibrations to be absorbed a bit
There appears to be a solder blob, lower right side on the label, of the SSR (the not 'EXT MOSFET'), it's probably melted into the plastic, so it won't go anywhere (but my OCD is saying that you should remove it anyway).
I saw the same. Nothing wrong with it. Triac for AC and Mosfet for DC. But it is still an SSR (Solid State Relay). Great thing about an SSR it does it switching on zero crossing (when the AC sine swings from on side to the other), further improve on electric noise and load bearing. It is also opto isolated between the DC control and the AC power side (As well as in a DC-DC SSR). Excuse the tech blurb. But for me a AC heated bed and a proper SSR is a win!
I just received my Tornado on May 10th, this is my first 3D printer. In your video you mentioned that the extruder screws need adjusting. Could you do a video on how to tell if they need adjusting, and how to perform it?
Thanks for a great review! Were both printers used as-is in factory condition? If so, why not use slicer settings specifically for each printer instead of using the same gcode?
+j mtx all printers were factory spec. The reason why I used the same simplify3D profile is because a lot of people will ask me for comparisons with the Cr-10 and that is the best way to do it since essentially they are almost identical. The blackbird and the pumpkin were done with a custom tweaked profile though
Good review Joe, May I offer a suggestion/request? You often show some very good models, but no links. Would you mind please mate. It might be nice to give the creators a mention too. Keep up the good work.
+Spike Kent I always tend to link the models actually. I haven’t done it for this yet as I edited and uploaded this video at 3am yesterday due to having to catch a flight this morning. Spent the last two days recording and resisting as I’ll be away for a few days. But I will include the links the minute I am back in front of a PC :)
Oh hell! It does look like I meant every video ... I didn't. I meant this one specifically. Sorry. Wow, you are a busy globe trotter :-) I gave it up cos I got too old :-) Thank you, I'll watch out for them.
Fantastic review as always man, really appreciated! One question: care to tell how "loud" is loud? I don't know, comparing it to something or an approximation in regards, of the db? 50-60 db? I'm buying it almost for sure (hope your link is the affiliate so you can also get something for that) but, as I will literally sleep and work in the same room, you made me a bit nervous with that... I mean, I know this things aren't silent snakes, but if you tell in the review "it's loud", then it gotta be especially loud... Cheers!!!
Thank you for the reply! I mean, it's a tool, and tools are loud. My case is a specific one, but maybe someone has it at their living room or so, glad to have (maybe?) brought an additional metric into the game! :) (or a further pain in the butt if you catch my drift :P) Cheers!
+el_marto haha in fact a did buy a dB meter, but constantly forget to record myself using it while printing :) on the other hand, next week I will upload the matterhackers pulse review, noise level is around 42 - 46 dB which feels ridiculously quiet
It is a great business model. these large printers sell for so much money (becuse of the volume of the printer) but the manufacturers are really only having to add a few extra Meters of Aluminium extrusion! Also, your reviews continue to be so good, focusing on the things that matter!
Hey Joe! I was given a Tevo Tornado yesterday for my birthday and I'm having a little trouble. Moving up from a modified Anet A8. Can you possibly hook me up with your settings?
Hi, Thank you for your review. I have this 3D Printer but I'm curious about the setting you're speaking about on extruder screw. Can you please show me on a picture which screw you're speaking about? As I'm not perfectly speaking english, I don't really get you on this point and I will need some precision. I will really appreciate your help on this topic because my current prints are regularly showing some layer shifting. Thank you in advance for your precisions and advices.
My main concern/problem with 3d printers is that the material used is supposedly biodegradable, which is a huge con in my book as I would be making parts for things such as motorcycles/outdoor items and want them to last for more than a few months or years.
Did they also include an eccentric on one of the v-slot roller, to adjust the tension, to keep the proper amount of tension/play on the roller to v-slot interface?
If you could personally only have one printer, would it be the cr10, cr10s, cr10mini or this tornado? Including some improvements that can easily be made, not just the way it came from the factory.
+Psy004 trusty is that out of all of those, the tornado has the same quality once dialed in as he cr-10s. But it’s almost half the price, so I’d go for that, spend some time dialing it in and then buy a filament sensor and possibly upgrade he board and it would still be cheaper :)
There's a lot of posts about people installing TL Smoothers to reduce artifacts. Have you seen that (or tried it?) Also, what did you set the Acceleration and Jerk settings to for good results?
+Where Nerdy is Cool! I just bought a set of smoothers to try out actually, both for this and the little monster so will know soon the difference :) I actually haven’t touched the acceleration and jerk yet. Every print on the review was with stock smart tings
Excellent review. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work. I look forward to new videos. I can't believe anyone flames you but then I don't pay much attention to those kind of comments. Maybe flameproof garments should be considered. Love your videos!!!!!!
It looks as though, they put crimped connectors on all of the wiring that goes into screw terminals. Putting stripped wires into the screw terminals is a sure way to get an eventual poor connection, which can lead to overheating, sparking and FIRE.
I’m in a contest to choose from either the legendary CR-10, the beastly Tevo Tornado or the feature packed Anycubic i3 Mega! If I win which do you recommend I pick? Thanks
SD Card Troubles This is my 1st 3D printer and 1st experience with a SD Card. The card that came with the Tevo works fine. I bought a SanDisk 16GB Ultra Plus card and put a few files on it. The MacBook Pro can read and write to it. BUT the Tevo recognizes the card but shows NO files. Any idea on what to do??
I am confused how this type of "Print quality" comparison on these low end printers is even possible, especially considering that getting the quality is on a per model and tuning basis...
please can anyone confirm the frequency of the printer for me? does the power supply support 50 and 60Hz ? because my country is only 60Hz/220V. All websites selling it saying in their description it's 50Hz without mentioning the 60Hz. Can anyone show me a picture of the power supply and what it says? is it 50~60Hz?
There is a lot of reports everywhere about the cheap stepper drivers giving salmon skinning artifacts why a lot are buying the smoothers to reduce it. Did you see the artifacts?
Thank you Joe for this Review, That´s the next Printer I am getting soon . I also think that the Tornado is Better also because of the fast Heatbed, I am getting my Tornado for 270€ (Euro) I also think that on all Printers, all Screws must be checked because of the Shipping vibrations
Print quality out of the box, Ender 3 will probably be a bit better. However, with some TL smoothers print quality on the tornado will be better. Along with the added print volume, Titan extruder and AC bed, I believe it is better overall
This is my first time watching one of your videos. What an exceptional review and quality of video. It was very well organized. However, I did not want to click on your video because it said 3D Maker "noob". You are not a noob, you definitely need a rename!
Thank you very much for the feedback, for the past year I have been wondering if I should rename it. I felt the name would be friendly to those just starting out and it implies that there is always something for me to learn. But thank you very much for the kind words
I had actually been looking for reviews of the Tevo Tornado (vs CR10) for the past two weeks and skipped through your thumbnail several times. For myself personally, I avoided clicking because I wanted an opinion from somebody that wasn't just starting out (almost like reverse clickbait?). There are a whole bunch of reviewers saying "this is my first printer" and things like that. I wanted a seasoned maker with experience in comparison with other printers. Ironically, you are definitely in that category. It even shows that you probably work in a similar environment for your day job. Anyway, subscribing was a no-brainer and I think your channel should be way more popular. I think renaming it now would be good while you still can before the channel gets too large, at that point it would be difficult. It might even help it grow!
Thank you very much for that. Gives me something to seriously think about in terms of where I want the channel to go. Truly appreciate it. Hope you have a nice weekend and a happy new year
The zebra artifacting around the doorway is a microstepping issue caused by the motor drivers not microstepping accurately enough. The area around the doorway isn't perfectly parallel to the X-axis, so it requires accurate microstepping. Here are some links with more information: ultimaker.com/en/community/16357-why-does-my-print-have-tiny-zebra-stripes www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/5uv78l/how_to_get_rid_of_artifactszebra_stripesmoir%C3%A9/
I tip my hat to you sir. How you can get prints like that out of a pile like this is beyond me. I have built 2 printers from scratch and this one is my worst experience to date. One you secure the dangerous 230v, unearthed bed cables, it screws up the levelling to the point of madness. 2 days in and I am writing this printer off.
+Ben P haha oh man, don’t get me started lol thankfully no, I’d hate to be out in that kind of position. I have no problem paying for import fees, it’s part of having this type of channel
+Paul F not informed of that myself. In my case I assembled it, or tried as the instructions are incomplete, tried to print something, results were abismal due to lack of part cooling fan. Requires too much work so will be putting it on hold for a while
Ahh, OK, well, It clearly shows there were problems with the machine. I read Thomas S. from germany had one that threads were not tapped and they just said not to bother they were making improvements.
We were impressed by the video, looking forward to the next. We are a small 3D modeling software startup completely bootstrapped and tooks us 5 years to develop our real-time collaborative CAD.? Would be great if our channels could collaborate.
+panicTom HD I have more than one to be honest, I can tell you the printers I use the most. And those are the prusa i3mk2s, the matterhackers pulse and the BCN3D sigma R17, those 3 are my workhorses
This printer is a joke. Over a month now since I got mine and its been a complete nightmare. Broken bed, broken cog on the extruder. The replacements they send me were even messed up and then to make matters worse they raised the price to replace the replacements... By the time I finally get my printer working I will be 150 bucks over the buy in price just trying to get this POS to work properly.
