Patsy could have been an Academy Award winning actress as well as the greatest female country artist. She put herself into a song like no other! Her facial expressions and purity of raw feelings are beyond belief! Her early departure from this life was tragic but we must thank God for the time she did have to touch us all and to leave a mark on country musics, a high mark that very few have ever come close to reach. Thanks for posting this treasure! All of the performances were excellent! I loved the hymn as well! This young lady nailed it as well!
I can't even believe he is gone...one of the most talented, and handsome singers ever.My mom saw him perform in Milwaukee, Wi. when he still wore white...she was dressed all in black and he stepped on her finger, ( she had her hand on the stage), ...he soon after started wearing black... ;)
AMERICAN IDOL >>> Patsy would do very well on modern talent shows due to Her calm yet sweet perfect projection, pitch , tone confidence , writing talent
Winchester Virginia. 9-8-32 the amazing Patsy Cline 3-5-63. Be gone for nearly 60 years now and that lady can still bring a tear to ones eye. Instantly recognizable and never equaled her delivery and inflection and unique beauty. Well it leaves me awestruck.
My brother and I drove from West Virginia to visit her grave. Her voice had a ringing quality that I've never heard in any white singer. Just lovely. Unique in the true meaning of unique. Plane crash: Piper Comanche, N7000P. Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Cowboy Copas, Randy Hughes. Hughes was Patsy's manager and the pilot. Not instrument-rated. He was concerned about the weather and stopped to call his wife, who told him the sun was shining in Nashville, so he pressed on in the face of bad weather. Without instrument competency, he lost control in the clouds and crashed, killing everyone.
I was in the 4th grade with Larry Collins. I never saw his sister, but he was a good kid. My parents tooks us to several of these shows. Great fun. My parents went to see one of the shows with Johnny Cash, so I always look at the audience to see if I can find my deceased parents.
Back in my radio DJ days, I had the thrill of having a cup of coffee with Tex Ritter and Waylon Jennings just before one their concerts. Waylon was griping that Chet Atkins wouldn't let him record what he wanted and Tex was giving him the wise council of his many years in show biz to relax and enjoy blossoming career! A favorite memory of my young radio DJ days!
Wow ! What a dream line-up ! Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, The Collins Kids & Bobby Helms all in one show. The other performers were fantastic as well. A true treasure I hope it's never taken down !
A young handsome Johnny Cash. I had never seen Patsy Cline perform. It's easy to see why she was so popular. Patsy also comes across as a strong woman.
@Charles Taylor yes, some people seem to have a wonderful gift for singing from a young age, don't they? I know it can be taught, but having the natural ability is a great advantage. It was a treat to see the video, I'm in Australia, and just loved it! 🙂
Hank Williams Snr singing the old country church, I grew up in Lilydale Australia, born in '63, I love Hank's songs, but the old country church tugs at my heart, I can hear all the saddest and happiness in his voice. Long live Hank Williams Snr, a true legend.
Who is still watching this in 2019??? Those Collins kids were pretty good! They were rock n roll. I'm a little dissappointed Tex didn't sing on this show. But it was still pretty good, can't complain about Johnny and Patsy!
I don't remember this show, but, that kid was outrageous... I hope he went on to BIGGER things for his talent. Johnny Cash, what can I say(?). Still !! 3:)
Larry is still alive. 75 years old. His sister Laurie died in 2018 after complications from a fall in her home. Look up “My window faces south” with George Morgan. You will see them both in their 20’s as well as a young Glenn Campbell !
Patsy Cline was the queen of the lovelorn blues. What a voice ,She wrote so many songs in such a short lifetime.RIP. She is an icon, like Marilyn Monroe now.
Idk if she wrote her songs? That wouldn't at all take away from how amazing she was, I'm just curious I guess, cuz I wasn't aware she actually wrote any of her songs?
Larry Collins on Double Neck was an incredibly talented kid! Ranch Party was an awesome show featuring many great guests of the time. We had a few 16mm films when I was a boy. And of course, Tex Ritter.
+Joseph Kressley Don't forget Johnny Bond, Fiddlin' Kate, Skeets McDonald, and the king of the strings (Larry Collin's instructor) Joe Maphis. Les "Carrot Top" Anderson and Sons of the Pioneers were always great too. This whole show featured amazing performers...though I wasn't too wild on the Hoosier Hotshots when they showed up.
A PURE CRYSTAL harmonious voice with the guitars & violins in the background , that is what I truely consider, the genuine Country-Folk songs & music coming from the USA. JOhnny Cash in the 1957 singing the this version of I WALK THE LINE, a heavenly delight. Thanks. jpier.
"I'm a Long Gone Daddy" is a Hank Williams song from a decade before. It's interesting how close country/hillbilly/rockabilly was coming to what eventually became "Rock and Roll" .
I agree! Early 50’s Country/Rockabilly/Rock n’ Roll/Surf Rock/Blues *all* overlapped. Just imagine if we didn’t try to kill off the entire generation in Vietnam, we’d probably have had another Hank Sr., Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Faron Young, Duane Eddy, or Dick Dale! I was not alive, but.. music from the Pre-British Invasion era is highly underrated!!
What a wonderful find this old ‘Tex Ritter Country’ clip is...they are all so very young! It’s great to see Ol’ Johnny Cash at the start of his fabulous career. The little guy jumpin’ around at the beginning is fun and of course, Patsy Cline is as moving as always. Thanks for posting.
Yep! 1954-58 I was in H.S. in California, listenin' to Elvis & Buddy Holly, but Joe Maphis and Semie Moseley (Mosrite Guitars) got me to put away the piano, and pick up the guitar - starting with a Fender Telecaster, and a Mosrite 12 string electric. Johnny Cash's songs got me to start singin' & "front" my own bands. But I was 19, and didn't like "Corny" Country music in those days - So I moved to So.CA and got into "Outlaw" Music of Johnny, Kris, Waylon, Willie & The Boys - - I lived the "good life" of quiet desperation, until my death & resurrection in 1974 - John 3 - Galatians 2:20
They're all very talented but Patsy Cline? She's on a whole other level. No one can sing like her. Probably the best vocalist in country, folk, rock, pop, soul, R&B, even opera. The way she puts soooo much feeling in her voice. Here and there a slight cry, slight yodel, slight pause, all perfectly timed. No one can duplicate that.
Perfect instinct for musical phrasing. I bet she never planned or knew what she'd do out there during a performance. Although she was obviously completely in control.
"...even opera..." Uh, look, I love Patsy Cline, too, but the demands that opera places upon singers is absolutely unreal. Add to that the requirement for being in costume (sometimes extremely elaborate with period stays, corsets, etc.) and acting and being on the stage for hours.
Wow the Collins Kids were so talented. I’d forgotten all about them. The vintage Patsy Cline piece is vibrant and shows her stage presence. Her voice control and phrasing is mesmerizing . 💕. Of course seeing a youthful Johnny Cash before he became the “Man in Black” is the frosting on the cake.
@@jwith100 I was 4,so I guess that makes you 10 years older than me! I was brought up on this music, but I can't remember seeing any of his shows, sadly.
They must have rehearsed many hours to present such a good show. All the music, vocal and instrumental, is top notch. The costumes are beautiful. The simple sets let the talent shine through, even if budget was a consideration. There was not a single mention or sign of a sponsor, at a time when sponsors plastered their names all over. I guess the show was bought by individual stations rather than broadcast by a network. Imagine so much talent in the same place and time!
I was serving in Germany when this was done and we had a guy who was a Jonny Cash fan fanatic, ask him any question about cash and he had the answer down to his belt size but of course we did not know if he was telling the truth.
That young Larry Collins was about 12 or 13 when he performed on this show but he was always full of energy and enthusiasm. Great stage presence. My late daddy loved Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves. So sad that they both met tragic ends and were so young.
I remember going to see the show in 1955 and it was just like this one. I loved it. We would ride the bus up to Compton from the Navy Base in San Diego. Those were wonderful carefree days.
The show was held every Saturday night live at a building called the Town Hall, carried live by TV station KTTV. Across the street was Jerry's BBQ restaurant you where would see some of the entertainers after the show.
Johnny Cash in white...and smiling. That was rare. And Patsy Cline in the same clip - OMG! I wonder if anyone here remembers that Tex Ritter was John Ritter's Dad. Anyone?
Patsy Cline was considered to be the best over all singer in country music, as far as pure skill and technique is concerned, and that is still true to this day. Not saying she is everyone's favorite, everyone has their own favorite songs. I am just saying what many music teachers and musicians have said, about her skill level and technique.
Patsy Cline and I tell you what I go to the lady and borrow say hey man I got Patsy Cline records at the house and she's come right on over and we have a good old time I'll just let you know the music of Patsy Cline really brought the girls back to my place I was always always love Patsy Cline just to let you know that and this is 25-30 years ago and I'm 67 now and I ain't got no records of Patsy Cline but I'm sure as heck trying
I’m surprised there are so few comments on the bluegrass band in at 13:29. These guys killed it and they didn’t get introduced. Was this a house band? Where can I find their music?
Great catch! I totally missed Jay Stewart being the announcer! If I may correct you...Jay was the announcer on "Let's Make A Deal" and for my money one of the greatest voice talents ever!
My grandmother was married to Bobby Helms dad,And I was really good friends with some of Bobby's kids,Used to go to his house in Martinsville Indiana quite a bit when I was in my twenties, Bobby and Dori his wife was really very nice people I loved visiting with them,My Grandmother had no children by Bobby's dad but we're married a few years. My wife and daughter just love Bobby's singing and songs and always going through the house singing my special angel and neither one is big country music fans until they head Bobby and then they go nuts over him Lol, Rest in Peace Bobby I miss you.
