I love RC Slocum. Having said that, it is little known that RC sent more players to the pros then did Nebraska at the same time Nebraska was winning three out of four national championships why? Because RC would take his foot off the gas pedal anytime we got ahead. It’s as simple as that. He did not have that killer instinct necessary to coach a national championship football team. He let other teams stay in the game way too long, way too many times. But I agree, he was still our greatest coach, but he could’ve done much better with the talent that he had.
I remember the R. C. Slocum teams. Hard to say he's the BEST HC -- Dana X. Bible and/or Homer Norton are the best, they did win natties -- but he's the last really good coach they've had.
RC lost so many bowl games in his own backyard. Twice to Notre Dame, once to FSU and UCLA. The SWC was so bad in football that it disbanded. And A&M is the main reason why the SWC folded. Texas did not help either. The SWC champion did not win the Cotton Bowl for something like eight years. RC won two bowl games I believe while at A&M. Sad.
The quality of football had very little to do with why the SWC folded. Did the fact that virtually every program was on probation damage the league? To some degree yes. But ultimately the league failed because in the early 90s the conferences took control of their media rights from the NCAA, so since the SWC was a Texas only league at that point, the league had no chance at securing a good TV deal. That's what broke the league up, and it's also why the Big 8 agreed to form the Big 12 with the Texas schools, they too were in the same boat.
@@re8746 again, even with full stadiums the league was not going to last. The SWC was completely based in Texas so the lack of large television markets made it next to impossible to get a decent deal, much like a strong one.
So losing three games against top 5 teams in which two of those were by 8 and 3 points was part of the SWC downfall? And A&M lost to UCLA while in the B12 not the SWC. The quality of play was not directly related to why the SWC folded. Most of what you’re saying is half truth or completely wrong. Even before the 90’s there were talks of SWC/B8 merging so that makes everything you said at the beginning incorrect. If you really want a single team to blame for the breakup of the SWC…. That would be a school that wasn’t even in the SWC…. Oklahoma
@@kg7100 Just look at the bowl record from Sherrill to RC. All I am saying is the SWC did not have a legit powerhouse football team and it cost the conference prestige. Tiring and old not winning big games.
@@es330td 92 and 94 talking regular season. Everyone was paying players. Guy that turned A&M in left for the job of President at OU a day after filing the paperwork
You do know he had to leave A&M because he got the Ags busted for cheating and then got his next school, Mississippi State busted as well. I guess coaches aren't held to the "Aggies do not lie, cheat or steal" code of honor.
@@vansims4903. Given that SMU got the death penalty just a year earlier "standing up to the NCAA" would not have been a wise move. Also, he was out of coaching for two years before coaching at MSU.
