My favorite freeway in Austin! You know what's really cool? Going through the Central Austin part of Mopac while there's a train going down the Union Pacific RR.
Great video. One of my favorite urban freeways in Texas. It's not a wide one, but features a neat variety of the old and the new, curves and also a multitude of hills, a rarity in urban Texas. It'll be nice to see this freeway widened; perhaps the worst congested freeway in the entire state.
MoPac stands for Missouri Pacific Railroad which ran it trains down the middle of the freeway. They no longer extist. They were acquired by Union Pacific Railroad.
@ScrewdUPClickV2 Well from what I've seen, the central median is about 60 ft wide. A double track railroad takes up 30 ft, plus 10 ft for signals and barriers. A managed lane would be about 12 ft wide plus shoulders, multiplied by two, so that equals 30 ft assuming 3ft shoulders. Existing lanes take up 72 ft total, and the "existing facility" is 172 ft wide at narrowest point, plus several extra feet of buffer space before the edge of the ROW.
If I'm correct, there's enough space in the central median of Mopac between 2222 and the Lake Austin Blvd interchange to fit a double-tracked railroad, two toll lanes, 6 general purpose lanes and a shoulder.
I live here and know every square inch of it. Notice the severe lack of turn signals and the need to pass on the right or middle lane as the left one is for those that have lack of respect for those in traffic? lack of turn signals show lack of respect too. Left lane is for passing.
Nice video, all of your videos are very good actually. I really want to make videos like this too when i have my driverslisence, how much time does it cost you on average? - Maurice
@ScrewdUPClickV2 Yeah, around that area would require taking the shoulders away, but that's only for like no more than a mile. There's enough room to actually add pavement under the interchange. This isn't the Katy Freeway where everything gets rebuilt. And if you're saying that the tracks in the median of Mopac are going to be removed? No way. Union Pacific won't let that happen without a bypass around Austin, which would cost in the billions. A 1X1 tollroad doesn't need THAT much ROW.
Looks good screw, great work once again. Hey when you driving through Austin you ever see any palm trees? Also I just dropped a new video check it out ...
