Texas Tackle vs Mustad KVD split ring pliers

Both are money well spent...BUT...When it comes to removing hooks and rings. The Texas Tackle is superior in every single way.
The only reason to buy the KVD is if you want the ability to cut line. As the cutter is quite good and holds up well. Although if you tie FG or Alberto knots. Nail clipper styles offer a closer cut on the non pe tag.

The only split ring pliers I’ve tried were mustads and while they do get the job done, just get halco sr pliers and a dedicated pliers that are JUST PLIERS!

IMPORTANT! DON'T BUY ON AMAZON Because they are not actually Texas Tackle brand. Some chinese and pakistani companies are selling knockoffs on there using the same name but the logo is a little different.

Until you try the leadmaster split ring plier you have not used a good pair of split ring pliers. I will agree that of the two pair you are showing, the Texas is the better pair. B ut find and try the leadmaster.

Hey TA: After doing frustrating trials and mods to reach some level of success splitting rings with the 2-in-1 Cabela's (virtual clones of the KVD) that I bought yesterday when shopping for braid cutting scissors, today I searched RU-vid for a HOW TO. That's when I found your INFORMATIVE video. Thanks for sharing. Lesson learned - buy single purpose tools.

LOL..yeah. Sometimes it's just better that way :) It's funny how something as simple as the last quarter inch of a pair of pliers can make such a big difference. And how much hair we pull out over trying to shove sharpened wire into wire bent into a circle..lol

I got a pair of these on clearance at walmart for I beileve $3 so no ragrets... Mine didn't line up right so even after trying to tune em in they still won't cut braid very well. Also had one of the grips come off one side. Funny this I noticed is (might be before they came out) that KVD himself uses a pair of Snap-On pliers as seen at around 12:34 in his AdvAng under the lid video from 2015 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v7RJ9mKQChM.html

I had to post this video after all the chatter about the mustads...I think about 10 years ago this chinese clone type plier popped up under the coast brand(you know...the overpriced shitty flashlight company) They were 25$ and had a sheath..lol Bought a pair on sale for 10 bucks..they rusted shut by the time I got back to dock on an overnighter...after proving worthless i tossed em to the crabs. They're good for a carry in your car type multi use type thing. But if you are really changing a ton of rings or if you like heavy jigging. Texas tackle orange or green handles are a must. You're out there a ton. You know the drill.

Excellent review. You have convinced me. Exact same issues as the KVD Mustard pliers (usually as a "Loss Leader" in a bucket of pliers etc, as you buy your tackle at the tackle shop) trying to change trebles, split rings, trying to get the pliers into a split ring on a lure, etc. I see that you can use the pliers on very small (relatively) tackle. Just ordered the Texas version. Looking forward to using. If they are crap, I'll be looking at using them for a Prince Albert on you, hahaha. Cheers Gaz

I'm actually glad you did this review because I was thinking I'd just carry the Mustad pliers on the water (since they really are good for cutting braid). Now I see that they'll actually leave me in a position where I'll require extra steady hands while the boat tosses--a nice recipe for an unscheduled appointment with a hook point.

Hi, Have you ever done hook reviews? If so, would you mind providing the link? I ask because I’ve recently started using Daiichi trebles (2/0-4/0) for blues and stripers. They have performed well but I’ve not heard that much about them. Conversations seem to be centered around VMC’s. Thanks and keep up the good work!
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
I haven't done any reviews on saltwater hooks. Only hook comparison so far discusses 13 different fw hooks ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4KjgPJ0FKNs.html VMC's get a ton of love because they are sharp relatively strong, resist corrosion well and are most importantly cheap! I haven't knowingly used daichii saltwater trebles. As long as they are strong, sharp and wear well. Fish em until they get too dull or rust. :) I'm of the opinion that 3/4 of straightened hooks are either defects or the fish hung a hook on a piece of structure. It takes a ton of pressure/ leverage to open a 4x treble. Many of my plugs I switched to singles.

I am really surprised by it. I bought my Texas Tackle ones from TW and wasn't happy with it from the word go because the pointed bit of the pliers is quite blunt as you can see which makes it quite difficult to pry open the split ring. I was going to buy the Rapala ones, I just haven't got around to it.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
I'm really surprised to hear that. WHat color handles?
@Rascallucci
@Rascallucci 7 лет назад
Same as yours, orange. Just look at the pointed bit, is just too blunt and fat in my opinion. You need that bit to be sharper. I want to try the Rapala ones. I have no idea whether it will be better, but from the picture at least the pointed bit looks much sharper, I am guessing it should be able to get in between the split ring much easier. www.rapala.com/rapala/fishing-tools/pliers-and-forceps/mini-split-ring-pliers/RMSP.html
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
Hmmmm...I'm really surprised you had a problem with em. The tighter you squeeze the more they open. I just buzz though. Maybe grind down the angle of the wedge to make it a tad narrower??? Not too much though so it spreads. I could definitely see if the point of the wedge were rounded it being problematic. But the way mine work is. It kind of auto finds the the right spot as you gradually close it. You're not trying to allign the free hanging ring at the end of the jaw...Then line up the wedge. With the TT you slid the ring on the bottom jaw and close when close.
@Rascallucci
@Rascallucci 7 лет назад
Grinding might help, but I don't have a grinder. Again, the issue is that pointed bit just being too blunt and fat. I will try out the Rapala ones which is not dissimilar to the Xuron 496 which has fantastic reviews or may be I will just try the Xuron 496. www.amazon.com/Xuron-496-Split-Ring-Plier/dp/B000BL6OZ8/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1490199275&sr=1-1&keywords=xuron+split+ring+pliers

Man, talk about BIAS. You didn't even make an effort to treat both tools equally. You like the Texas Tackle one and made sure that alone was shown favorably. I don't like either of them. There are better options (Xuron 496, etc), often less expensive, made in America, with far better reviews.

The benefit of the KVD pliers is their multipurpose use. They will work on a large majority of split rings, they cut braid and mono, and because the tip of the jaw section closes tight and has teeth you can use it to pull hooks out of many fresh and saltwater fish. Ive brought the KVDs on many freshwater and saltwater trips, and they were the only pliers i needed.

@JiffyBiff
@JiffyBiff 6 лет назад
A little late to this party, but just wanted to add a couple cents.... my orange TT split ring pliers bent on the handle just before the hinge. The metal is very soft, and mine cracked. I wasn't applyingvthat much force, but after a few more rings, they broke. Might have been a bad pair... but I was not impressed.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
What size rings? Must have gotten a defect. I've used them on thousands of rings now. Still work like new. If you primarlily use it for fw bass lures the orange handles should last years! Saltwater pelagic sized rings...they'd last a few hundred rings.. Which is why they offer 2 sizes larger...Were yours made in pakistan? says it on the pliers.
@JiffyBiff
@JiffyBiff 6 лет назад
Tackle Advisors it was on bass lures... on some Spro #3's (16 lb). Changing out hooks on some squarebills. The handle pushed inward, and the jaws wouldn't open. I had to force the handle back open to reset the gap. That's what cracked them. My guess is it was on "off" pair... but it soured me on the brand. I bought a rapala that I'm not in love with, so I might try another pair of TT's. Fingers crossed.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Damn dude....that's pretty crazy...had to be a bad pair. If they were junk....or if there was a better pair. I'd have switched. This vid over a year old now...and they're still running like new. And I've swapped trebs on about 20lbs of pluggage since. If you still have them...i'd say snap a pic and send it to TT. Betcha they send ya a new set.
@JiffyBiff
@JiffyBiff 6 лет назад
Tackle Advisors I should have snapped a pic, but I think in my frustration I might have binned them... hard. I liked the design, and the application, more than my Raps, So, like I said, I might invest another 14 bucks, and try again.

That's a sebile bonga jerk. That is one of my favorite striped bass plugs. They cast well enough. You can troll them....and they track so true at high speed..if you are running and gunning..you can leave them in the water even at 20kts :) It's similar to the loved stick shad but has more built in action. I've even hung tandem 4x gami octopus hooks on wire...and a strip of bluefish and set it out and it kinda waves in the current for sharking. Almost had the world record cobia but it missed the hook as we all stood in awwwe at how it was as big as we were. (that same week the NJ cobia record was broken so they were in the area...and the one that was harassing us was much much larger) The one pictured I drilled and foamed the inside of. (they make salt and sun versions that are pre foamed) The hollow cavity ones tend to leak unfortunately. rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&toolid=11800&pub=5575291817&campid=5338075559&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_odkw%3Dbonga%2Bjerk%26LH_PrefLoc%3D2%26_osacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xsebile%2Bbonga%2Bjerk.TRS1%26_nkw%3Dsebile%2Bbonga%2Bjerk%26_sacat%3D0 The bigger 215mm is what is in the video with the single The one with the treble and black spot is the 165mm salt and sun series (pre foamed and heavier trebles) they are not tough to find The hook is an Owner 9/0 single replacement hook.

@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
They work great for stripers one of my favorits. Too bad they're so hard to find.. I have about a 5 to 1 bonga jerk to stick shad ratio in my arsenal.....Stick shads in larger sizes are good....but for where I fish in NJ I prefer the bonga jerks. In the different sizes.
