Trust me when I say this.......I went into this wanting to compare my favorites....to what others have said are it's equal or better....I expected it to be a tie..favoring the ones I'm most familiar with.....And I still prefer the black ones over the xuron....but the silver TT's are just not as good.....1 tool took care of everything outside of Tuna (which I need to replace after the boat ate em) There aren't enough micro rings used on US market lures to warrant buying a pair to dedicate specifically for them. Again....one of the things that made the orange handled pliers so great.
@@TackleAdvisors want to check something..when you close them see if the orange foam is getting compressed and trim back some with razor or knife if so..should get distinct click when closing...had that problem some time ago and the little spring would sometimes interfere from closing all the way ..I purposefully made them more narrow than black coated, but should not be able to bend handle very easy or at all will check on lower jaw for smallest rings...it's the reason I have small yellow handle for them, but orange should still work just not as well..keep in mind they are hand made and some individual variance will happen no matter how careful the QC over time I now have 4 sizes to cover different sizes..approximate measurements....yellow, small (00-#4)...orange, standard (#1-#5)...green, large (#4 up)...blue, XL for 300lb tuna rings the quality has never changed...made by manufacturers of surgical quality dental instruments and good chance they make the dental instruments for your dentist I think reviews like this are great for everybody and appreciate it thanks, Darrell
@@TackleAdvisors I checked a few from stock that are now shipping and those issues aren't there..the handles flexed a little but with much greater pressure needed to open rings..occasionally a handle has broken and I've replaced them no matter how old..don't know when those were actually made, but always making small changes to improve the pliers, went a little too far with width of lower jaw on the ones you got....if anyone has a problem with them I'd like to hear about it..email me at sales@TexasTackle.com
@@djl2033 I just bought a pair off ebay from a very reputable seller. I believe these depicted as well as the ones I purchased, may be conterfeit. The etching displays "Made in Pakistan" and "Taxas Tackle". I looked into this, and saw reports of this on amazon as well. At 7:00 you can see "Taxas Tackle" in the video above!
Dude, you should remove this video or at least let people know you bought Chinese knock off Taxas Tackle, not real Texas Tackle pliers. You're swaying people away from a good pair of split rings. I just bought some from tackle Warehouse and they are great!
Any split ring plier updates? "Taxes Tackle" had claimed they were working out supplier issues around the time you posted this. I'm just wondering if the refined the pliers a bit in the last 4 years, but I saw a recent amazon review that said theirs said "Taxes" on them too, so I assume it's still from the same batch.
I prefer Xuron Brand. Made in the U.S.A and amazing attention to detail. The Halco Ring Tool is also really nice from Australia. They have some handle material that gets really slick when wet though, whereas the Xuron has a nice textured grip. The Xuron also have a smaller “hook” on the opposing side of the wedge, which holds the split ring in the optimum place so it doesn’t roll. Even on 00. And no, I have no affiliation to either company. Just ran across them after tossing my other POS pliers when I got fed up.
I also ordered the $10 Tt pliers from Amazon, only I received an ignition coil(???) . Thanks to your vid, I did not order a replacement, only a refund.
I can now comfortably say that the best all around pliers(for me)these days are the Halco brand split ring pliers. They use a completely different method of opening the ring by using grooves cut in the jaws that allow for and initial opening of the ring, which is usually enough for most small to mid ring sizes, and superior grip when adding a little pull pressure to get those larger diameter rings to open that little extra bit. I still use the tt ones, but mine are wearing out, and after seeing this, I may just stick with the Halco ones from now on.
When using the Xurons, instead of taking the tips out from the split and re-grasping them from around the outside, it's easier you leave the tips of the pliers in the split ring and rotate that way.
Well, let my help you out here, mate. First, you can't comfortably use one thing from 00 to 9 size rings. It's just not possible and absolutely unnecessary. For the smallest of rings, starting from #00 I use tweezers. The best I've seen are from Belmont, model MC-048. Comfortably working with smallest of rings to size 2, probably, as they're recommended for. For medium size gear: #2 - # 6, hands down the best are pliers from Halco. They hold rings nicely and are really comfortable to use. They've been developed for professionals, rigging lures at the plants, so no wonder they're so good. Even Owner/Cultiva have them made by own brands. For really heavy stuff, we need to take something heavy. As I don't fish much that style, can't really recommend a model. As a honourable mention, I must say about Rapala tweezers. Small, very light and have double tooth construction. Work with all small rings from #00(although not so comfortable as Belmont, and you have to hold them in your left hand, this way the smaller tooth will be the one inside the ring) and I change rings on Mepps Syclops 2 with no problem.
Yep. Mine say Taxes Tackle also. Purchased from EBay a year ago. I messaged a seller that showed black jaw pic on EBay when I saw your IG post couple days ago, got the standard " we don't sale counterfeit items in our store" reply. They all use same images anyway. BUMMER
I’ve had both black and silver TT pliers. The black ones were poor. I’ve found the silver ones FAR superior and their jaws are finer than yours in the video. But in both pairs the quality of the box joint is rubbish. I think the real issue is the country of origin and poor quality controls. Just my opinion
I recently purchased a pair of Texas Tackle and was very disappointed. Like you said, they are too bulky in the tip. Very hard to use. I'm looking for a different pair now.
To be honest I think what happened to me happened to you! I bought a pair on Amazon and then I found out they are knock offs!! They new ones you got look just like the pair I got and they aren’t the Texas Tackle ones just knock offs! I don’t hardly ever buy on Amazon unless it’s something that don’t really matter! Even got a pair of knock off Costa sunglasses and when I put them on I knew right off and got my money back, if you look on your new pliers they say Taxas not Texas! They are knock offs
I had put up pictures of how butchered the lock up was of the pair of 30101s I had gotten on Amazon. They work but man the machining sucks and metals soft.
@@TackleAdvisors actually Pakistan makes a ton of knives and stuff, some of my older stuff from when i was a teen made from over there has held up exceptionally well. Lol and I pay attention to all the origin stuff, but that has been a good one so far.
@@Z3Inc If you go to the community tab on my channel's home page....I post a ton of deals I come across.....I also posted a few times an outline of all the tools I use regularly......if you head there...and scroll down a tad....you'll see the post about the drivers.
When you bought your original pair TT pliers did they have all the size options available now (i.e. The yellow handle small ones, the green large, and the blue handled XL)?
I recall your original video on the Texas Tackle pliers, and Tactical Bassin’ just posted a video recommending the Texas Tackle Splitring pliers and from TackleWarehouse..... sucks indeed
I think I paid close to $20 for the Texas tackle pliers last year, the quality is something you would get from the Dollar store. The jaws are so soft and were damaged after changing one split ring & the rubber handles slid off all after the first use as well. Such a disappointment.
Tackle Advisors That’s even worse. Ha. Sad to see when a product worsens for more profit (presumably). At 10 years old I’d put 4 quarters in the mail, to the Worth Co, and get their split ring pliers that worked okay. Was 1980. Tackle nut n reel junkie/fixer, too, since 9! Thanks (Nick?).
I came by the channel to comment on the Texas Tackle split ring pliers and found this video. I've yet to watch it all but will. I've had my TT pliers for a bit over a year. I do not like them. I have $3 split ring pliers from craft stores I prefer, and use, over my TT pliers. The reasons are several but primarily the "nub" on the TT is too big/blunt and the it's placement seems odd comparably. I suppose they may work ok for larger splits but not on my back bay plugs. This is the first time I've disagreed with your recommendation. Ok...off to check out the blue handled pliers in this video. Maybe a new brand to research/purchase? We'll see...
I've had issues the more I've used the new orange handled pliers... My old ones are awesome... The new ones suck. Can't get em to work on rings that were in the old ones wheel house (that was the gist of this video)
I wouldn't waste my time with anything xuron makes, why not worth the money, I used them in defense electronics manufacturing & were found to be inferior & lacking in quality. The entire company for which I worked switched to Lindstrom for wire cutters & pliers with much more success & quality made, unfortunately I think the aforementioned company doesn't make split ring pliers
I like many really only have experience with their flush cutters... Never thought of them as any top quality brand or anything... Loose joint never exuded quality feel... But they worked until someone inevitably cut the wrong type of wire with it..... Again and again and again lol (I swear that's how they remain in business)
I've just started building spinnerbaits & I am junking my split rings attaching the blades. I've tried several different swivels with limited success...I'm using the original Texas tackle orange handles...any advice
I use tri shear...not sure if they're in business anymore......I the KVD's cut braid great. My sargent sportsmates cut great for saltwater...I also use the boomerang tool whenever I don't lose them.....and that cuts great as well. :)
Oh yea. Forgot to mention i bought the luckycraft square bill set on amazon that you suggested. I think there sold out now. Looking forward to using them.
Just bought another pair at Ace and compared them. The broken set of pliers was from Amazon and they were stamped Taxas. The new set was stamped Texas Tackle. I am hoping to have better luck with the real deal. Damn counterfeiter knockoffs from Amazon!!!!!
Ive been usin the toothpick from my victorinox for split rings forever its fast and easy once you get the hang of it. Except on heavy tackle. I always finish the job with my hand...wait i meant for pliers or toothpick.
A lot of companies went to the crapper bin to buy their replacement gear. As an aside, I no longer buy Carhartt-GE-Motorola-(long list) because they sold out to the board and shareholders for profit over quantity. Aside #2: I actually REALLY like my lil KVD's because they also have held their edge for braid in addition to the snap ring tooth working pretty darn good... but I'm also a newbie.
Yup....executives up to the Green and blue handled pliers....The orange handled pliers are no longer as universal and are much more flimsy. (they've had the 4 colors/ sizes for awhile now)
What split rings do you recommend for size 1/0 4x trebles? And possibly size 6 trebles? Looking through the market of split rings and not sure what I should settle on before ordering. Still fairly new to the hard baits game.
What kind of lures? Decoy owner and spro make very good rings.. The difference between a size 6 and 1/0 4x is pretty significant I've used size 2 rings on 6 trebles and size 5 on 1/0
@@TackleAdvisors Sounds good. Thanks! 👍 West coast guy so will be throwing mainly sp minnows and some smaller jerk baits like lucky craft 110 flash minnows.
Literally bought texas tackle pliers 2 weeks ago from your earlier video.... oh well gonna keep using them. They worked fine. I don't change that many split rings. Took off those damn trebles on my new 6th sense crankbait. Small split ring was a bit of a chore the first time but good after that. All my cranks are getting single hooks. Don't care what my buddies say about missing hookups
I think my biggest gripe is they lack the range that made them so unique.....tiny rings up to some pretty stout hardware.....still very good on bass tackle...They just decreased its scope so you have to buy the executives and green handles.....
I'd guess they're knock off, Amazon is full of product reviews with people pointing out similar issues. I find it's best to order direct from the company or a trusted seller like tackle warehouse.
Steez ags 7'6 m ml, St croix legend gulf coast, loomis glx, tailwalk taigame converted to baitcast , tailwalk hi tide tz...reels....any 2500 and smaller spinner and bfs baitcasters
My original texas tackle work fine down to 2/0 or even 000 (diff mfr's use different numbers..I guess the executive texas tackles would be the best now that the current tt pliers jaws are wider. (and you can always grind them down to suit your needs
Hey Scoob, Would love to see you put a split ring on those PITA Kastmasters; especially the 3oz. I’m forever bending out the split rings. I have altogether given up on Wolverines. Thx, man.
They're true pains in the ass.....If you saw how I inside outed the ring ..that's about the only thing you can do....That I'm aware of anyways... Same with the big deadly dicks or their clones
Good stuff Scoob. I have to learn how to braise !! I have a box of old tins that I can't get split rings onto (and that plug, 2nd one down, very nice !!)
Sourcing the rings can be a bit tricky.......gotta get the hardened steel.....if not it can oval/ deform and snap at the braze.......the silver solder is the strongest....I have some rings....got enough butane, solder and flux......for ya if you want to swing by....
@@TackleAdvisors gotta see what I can do in the upcoming spring semester... even pulled it off at a meeting at the venerable ETH in Zürich a couple of weeks ago :)
@@TackleAdvisors I had seen someone else say it says taxes tackle so I put the video at 1080p then put my face uncomfortably close to my phone. Lo and behold, there it is
Yeah.......If you are only using them on bass gear and worlverine type rings..they're fine.....not as good as the black one's for ultralight or heavier.....shame...thought that amazon deal was a steal.
I have the KVD ones and the tip was too bulky until I filed it down to my liking. Don't know why the tips on so many split ring pliers are square when the rings that they go into are obviously round.
@@TackleAdvisors What makes them mediocre? IOW what about them is subpar? I have 2 pairs, they seem neat and compact, wondering if I am missing out on something superior and why?
Found them poor for ultralight applications and for heavier.. I can twist the Jaws on 4h rings and they don't fit in small ones... They work well for bass sized stuff but I target tons of species and like to get the most out of a tool
Because they used to be considered the best split ring pliers out there. He posted about them being on sale for $10 instead of usual $17-$20 range, and seeing how he might have been recommending garbage probably needing to clear the air on the pliers.
