Here's an idea to help make your press a bit more user friendly when stamping plates like that. Print your plates with a small lip, say 1/8" wide all the way around. Then on your upper wood piece put a couple of thin clips on each corner to hold the plate in place. That will hold it in place so you aren't trying to get it aligned all the time. You can put a guide mark on the edge of the wood to help you center things in the press as well.

Nice touch with including both manual *and* specialized tool methods for so many steps. I always try to explain to friends about how the specific tools are nice, but not always "essential" to the process. Granted, they make life easier, of course. But like anything else, understanding the raw method can make you better utilize the tools.

@punishedpropsacademy - Leather worker here, if you properly "case" the leather you will end up with a cleaner and crisper image. Casing is soaking the leather, then allowing it to dry back to an almost dry state (only the top side is allowed to dry, by leaving the bottom in contact with a marble). This allows the corium and flesh side of the leather to remain damp, meaning the grain (outer surface) is drier, and able to take a much crispper impression.

He would go as far as taking fiberoptic lines and individually light the window port holes on humongous Battle Star Galactica models in his dinning room! Then again you would you expect from a hoogy shop owner and the creator of the 501st Legion Storm Trooper Squadron Chapter in my city of Baketsfield. LOL, I miss my super nerd of an older brother. BILL! You mad genius! You can totally make a roller. If you create a flat sketch with your texture outlined, just like you did but make the length the circumference of the roller you want. And the height the width of the roller you want to use... Create a cylinder the circumference and height you calculated. You can extrude the sketch from object face instead of from plane, select the cylinder face as the object, and it will self wrap around. If you are careful to make sure the two edges that seam match, you will have a continuous pattern. Punch a hole down the center of the cylinder and Bob's Your Uncle! Hope this helps. - Love Fischer Builds
@tiffanysandmeier4753
@tiffanysandmeier4753 3 года назад
The roller should be solid (100% infill), and the inside diameter of the hole in the center should match a metal tube since the metal is less likely to deform under pressure. It would allow for printed details, but rigidity of steel. You could just go with a rod for an axil, but thinner print and more metal might be more durable. But the tolerances have to be pretty tight. Otherwise, there is unnecessary strain on the parts.

Printmakers have a rolling press which would make it easier to do larger pieces. Using that combined with something like the heater element from a vacuum press might be very efficient. Another option would be to use what Frame shops use. Frame shops often have large machines used for dry mounting which will use a vacuum and heat to dry mount artwork. If you happen to find one for sale in your area I'd check to see if it can reach the required temperatures.

It'd definitely be possible to make a cool roller, I've used something similar to impress a cobblestone pattern into some Milliput for use as a miniature base. I think rolling it over a larger expanse of foam would be pretty difficult, though, maintaining the same pressure all the way through would take some practice - and of course heating a big area at once would be tricky

This has been the latest greatest in card making - heat the foam, press your embossing folder or stamp into it, and boom - you have an inverse stamp. Ink your foam and stamp it on paper.

Nice prop as always! I like all your videos, but the long build videos are the best! Especially on mondays! :D That patterning technique gave me an idea. On Shapeways on other 3D printing companies, you can print in metal. I already printed some jewels in steel, bronze etc... and I can say the prints have reasonably good details (made a little snake with scales and the scales have printed nicely). So maybe you could print your patterns in cheap metal like steel or aluminum (not that cheap but fairly cheap), and then heat the metal pattern to make like a hot plate that you could then press on the foam, and even can keep heating up with the heat gun while pressing on the foam. Maybe that way the pattern will imprint even better and deeper. Well, that was just a thought :D That's a really nice and interesting technique you came up with! Thank you for all your content, all your time filming, building, editing etc... That's very much appreciated!

Not sure if it has been suggested but a T-shirt Heat Press might be a way to heat a larger foam areas, then if you had metal stamps they could heated bit like a hot foil printing plate instead.

Love this stamp method I also tried my hand at a couple textures on my 3D printer. I made a Spider-Man texture.

im guessing you can make some sort of a roller like the ones used in baking to make a sheet of dough for cakes and pizza and etc, you'll have to use it by hand unless you make some sort of jig kinda like a pasta maker, one side has a surface roller, one side has a flat roller and you push the foam or leather between the rolls to make the textures, it should work
