Oh yeah just so everyone knows, the new voice lines for Vs Saxton Hale were already a part of the mod. It wasn't Valve hiring a replacement. My point was that Valve very easily could have hired the actual voice actors to replace the lines if they were set on adding it as a new mode.
The worst part of it is that they HAD the VAs for at least 6 of the characters COME IN TO THE STUDIO...TO RECORD VOICELINES...for the new emotes. (Also I think the administrator VA was there too but IDK what she recorded) Edit, in case anyone's wondering: People who I know they had in: Robin Atkin Downes (Medic), Dennis Bateman (Pyro, Spy), Gary Schwartz (Demo, Heavy), John Patrick Lowrie (Sniper), and, I'm pretty sure, Ellen McLain (Administrator) People who they didn't/I don't know about: Grant Goodeve (Engi), Nathan Vetterlein (Scout), Rick May (Soldier, RIP) If they did have the full cast come in, they could probably have hired Nolan North for Soldier, since he played both Soldier and Engi for Expiration date
It is still labeled as Community, so if I had to guess it probably will be in itself fully reworked to not need vscript or a sourcemod like player destruction was, Which will probably be when they get the official voice actors for most of the classes, or they’ll just get them later, if we’re being realistic it was probably a scheduling issue that would either delay other fixes and preparations with the update, delaying it
@@Thomas-vn6cr so your tellin me you think the 2 team members (1 being the manager) risking possibly their jobs to push out a update, did it to not do it anymore? cause they always had that option
Can we appreciate the guy who did impressions of the 9 playable classes? Like he has a lot of talent. And maybe in the future he can do a perfect impression Edit: wow i actually didn't expect my comment to blow up. Thx for 1.7k likes :)
The "new" lines are from the mod since the first iteration, basically the creator of VSH made everything so it's not Valve fault for using that VA for all the new lines
It's just that it is 100% Valve's choice to add the mod. So it is on them when theyre the ones who approve of what gets in the game. Like I said in the vid, it comes off as kinda amateurish approving of impressions of the characters when they absolutely could have hired the voice actors if the new lines were needed.
@@SquimJimIt sounds kinda amateur and lazy from Valve but I think even if Valve wanted to do official voice lines from the official voice actors it still wouldn't be perfect, simply because they did the lines we love almost 20 years ago and they're losing their abilty to do it. Robin can still do a very nice Medic and Spy voice and Scout's voice actor is still on point, but like Heavy's voice actor can only still kinda do a Heavy even tho he also did the Demoman voice lines and The Administrator also sounds really different nowdays.
Yeah, no. Even though it is pretty impressive, you can clearly tell that he can't exactly hit the correct pitch, and some of the deliveries come out very off, especially for Spy. It is nice that we are getting new voice lines though
Any video game company in the world would give ANYTHING to have game like TF2 on their hands A game that after 12 years STILL can give up to 70-90k online players everyday and STILL brings a shit ton of money Yet Valve just kinda casually abandoned it and refuses to add even a 0.1% effort into updates from their part What a damn shame this is
yea that's the problem with tf2 being owned by valve...they make most of their money from selling games made by other people and community market taxes, there's literally 0 incentive for them to actually put effort into anything...csgo is their biggest money maker, they could straight up delete it from the face of the planet and they'd still make billions from the other stuff lol
Except the voice actors have been getting together and doing community things a lot recently. Just valve not taking the time or money to get the voice actors to do a couple lines.
Can we just mention how near fuckin' perfect the impressions are? First time I heard Scout, I didn't even realize, and lets not get started on how well everyone else was done. Obvious impression or not, I am fucking stunned at how incredible of a job that guy pulled.
Yeah, the guy who did them did a great job, especially considering he did all nine. I wouldn't think anything of it if not hearing them directly side by side.
@@RoyaLotad Eh, Scout and Soldier were the only ones I thought were super close to their voices (scout a smidge less). Demo and Heavy sounded like early takes, same with med. To me, the rest were off a bit too much.
"guys, have you read your contract?" "what the FUCK is a contract" "uh, he can punch your head off if you don't do wel-" *head explodes* "less talking, more shooting!"
Y'know, it might not be the "update-sized update" we were expecting and/or hoping for, but it is the biggest (non-holiday) update we've gotten in a long while. I'm just glad we got it at all.
@@HB-fq9nn Yea kinda, but I mean like an actual, non-holiday themed update. There's just been a bunch of Smissmas and Halloween lately. (And everything that comes out then is usually Smissmas and Halloween-themed respectively.)
The only difference between a major sized update and this update is new weapons or rebalance, and personally, we dont need new weapons, and when they do add new stuff, its at most 3-4 items with 1 being decent. We’re not missing anything to this pretty huge update.
@@sirreginaldfishingtonxvii6149 This update is advertised as the TF2 Summer 2023 update. This is still a holiday themed update, like the previous Summer update events.
A "day 2-ish" update may still be realistic. As it's not unusual for Valve to release an update to fix most of what is broken in the first release of the actual update a few days later. So, them just throwing in community fixes there just to make sure that all non-map-fixes are rolled out together seems possible.
@@konah4547 Jungle Inferno (and many old TF2 updates) showed off the new content over the course of a few days, usually 3, but all the content dropped all at once on the final day, including maps, hats, items and fixes.
so ive heard that they were having some issues with the fixes and that thet were gonna have to input the fixes in another update if they wanted the update out this summer
Since this update has had the most players TF2 has ever had, I would definitely expect them to improve on this in the next Summer Update to the point that we might even get a major update again. Also, *SEAL*
This update nearly doubled peak player count. Recently the peak count reached 250K while the last peak count was in 2021 when it reached 150K. Considering that some of these can be both this is great.
To be fair, the VSH impressions are closer to the original actors than Engineer's voice impression in Expiration Date (Note: Valve was genuinely unable to rehire Engie's voice actor for Expiration Date)
Someone reached out to Eric Smith at Valve recently and he mentioned that most of the fixes (not community fixes from the workshop though) they added were from emails that were sent, and they plan to add the workshop fixes in future updates. Which kinda sucks because they said they were gonna add them THIS update, but at least we will eventually get them.
Except the obvious missing person, which is unfortunate. I suppose if they had and wanted to, they could keep the impressions guy as soldier. I know some people think that replacing a VA like this is disrespectful to the original one, but I think it'd be fine.
@@nikeiyomiuri2728 Last I saw of him he was streaming on twitch. Its been a while though, so idk what hes up to now. His YT channel ChiliOfDestiny is pretty inactive currently.
It's very weird to see those new voices considering Sniper's VA recently posted he was at Valve recording some stuf... didn't discuss what of course will that eventually come as an actual surprise? im just kinda confused. it also feels off that Valve wouldn't contact the other VAs since they even do some skits within themselves in character, so they still have it in them
A few things of note about the update: Vs Saxton Hale being removed: Casual servers apparently did not have Vscript enabled, so the gamemode wasn't even working. Community Fixes: An email from Eric Smith said that they are reviewing the community fixes to see if any of them can/should be included in future updates. I personally think this bring some merit to the idea of a day 2 or a part 2 update where it adds some fixes and the working gamemode.
These maps are AMAZING. I've played like four, all as a soldier, and I had the most fun I ever had as a Soldier! It's insane how fun this game is when there is an open sky box and a lot of vertical movement. It just feels natural, instantly helped me to get on the top with pretty nice killstreaks
2fort is one of the worst maps for two reasons 1. tight, creeping corridors and an easily-defendable choke 2. OH MY GOD HEAVY TF2 HITS HIS HEAD ON THESE SKYBOXES
I like the fan made voice lines! I like them because they fit the character, not that they sound exactly like the og voice lines. I like them a lot. I’m really really hoping the community fixes will come later.
The guy who makes all the impressions is actually a youtuber, his username on the platform is McGuinnsBook and he's good at doing all 9 impressions in my opinion, he has been doing it since quite a while, but I wonder why valve wanted him instead of the voice actors because they were quite fond on making more TF2 content in the past months. Edit: VS Saxton Hale mode apparently wasn't made by Valve and rather is made purely by the community so I guess that takes a role into the reason why original voice actors couldn't be there
Regarding the new voice lines, yes they are noticeably different when listened to, but for me at least they're close enough that in the middle of a game when there's a lot going on and I'm not focused on the specific vocal patterns, the difference is much less noticeable, if at all. Except Sniper, that one I noticed immediately.
Scout, Engie, and all the support classes stood out to me immediately. Demo and Heavy sound VERY close. Soldier sounds notably different from Rick May but passable enough, especially in his absence. It's still bizarre they included the mod's original impressions when Valve can throw their chump change money at getting the official VAs to redub them, *especially* when they've been active recently and shown they're still interested in TF2, Engie's original voice actor and ofc Rick May notwithstanding.
Agreed. I mean, the competitive mode's voice-lines (which are official) are much more jarring than the VSH ones, since they were done in 2015/2016 after all and really showed the age of the game.
If I recall there are rumours going around that the community fixes are pushed back because changing the engine requires a lot of testing, Source Engine's core aspects is that everything works in tandem, change one thing it may change another. We can expect to see fixes, just not at the current time probably due to the sheer amount.
2:19 omg That’s me!! I remember seeing your name there but I assumed it was just someone using your name lol. It’s an honor to have fallen to your Ubersaw sir lol
TF2 has been getting updates longer than any other game in video game history. The fact we get anything anymore is something we should all be very grateful about.
They did do some community fixes! They added the 'battle banana' stuff to the second banana, its listed as an accepted item on the workshop, no mention of it in the patch notes. But yeah could have been more...
Apparently because of the work involved in doing both the community fixes AND the new features for map makers that will let them do awesome custom things, the fixes are delayed, but coming soon
I think the goal for the community is to keep expectations low and enjoy what they get. VNN said this update is by two Valve employees who worked on it on their available time and it shows.
I can't comprehend Valve's business decisions, the player count peaked at a quarter million for a game that hasn't seen an update in years and they refuse to do anything with it.
Hey Squimjim! It was awesome to bump into you on Rotunda! I've been a fan for a while now and I just wanted to say gg on that game. Can't wait to see the next video on the Summer Update! 6:46
Community fixes are on the way. Eric Smith, one of the two devs working on TF2, stated in an email that was posted on r/tf2 that they are currently looking at community fixes right now. I fully expect to see a Summer part 2 update in a few weeks.
I have a feeling they'll polish the new Saxtol Hale mode; it just doesn't feel right, at least for me. And yeah, I'm expecting a lot of community fixes because that's what I care about the most, and all of the fixes on the workshop I upvoted and added to my favourites, hoping they'll all get added. No hate for the update; I'm happy we got some new toys to play with.
And then spend 5 years balancing them to the point they just give up and just nerf them until they are joke weapons OR they just leave them on a completely broken state and just never touch them again.
This is about my opinion on it too. It feels like a major update stuffed into a minor one, if that makes any sense. Like, I appreciate the maps, and from what I've played, they all play well and don't appear to be hugely buggy. But if you needed proof that Valve don't do anything for TF2, then VSH is your smoking gun. Impersonations of voice actors instead of the real deal, it broke on release, and a seeming lack of interest of making a fanfare about it. Hell, it just released at an...odd time of day. As if they wanted it out the door.
Did everyone forget that some of the VAs can barely do the character voices anymore? Rick is gone, Engie can't do it. Heavy's VA can barely do it (poor guy is in his 70s, leave him be). The most likely one would be Medic's but still.
@@corrinvondrachen1097 Heavy's VA can still do Heavy, it's Demoman he has trouble with. Spy, Pyro, Sniper, Scout, Heavy, Medic, Heavy, Saxton Hale and The Administrator are all still very much able to do their voices.
For non voice actor voice lines, they’re pretty damn good I have to say. even if they’re not the OFFICAL VA’s, I’d say they do a very serviceable job, I’d even elevate it to a “great” job
They scraped together a community update in guise of real content release. There is no one working on the team that has the passion or dedication to release a new set of weapons that need to be balanced with and against current weapons. Jungle inferno is about to be 7 years old . In 3 years that will a full decade since that last "rebalance".
@@StealingYourWiFi i actually just realized you're probably right...there's 0 passion or interest from the devs, if they were to release new weapons they would either stay completely broken or completely useless forever...it's better that we don't get any at all tbh. reksins like the awp would be cool tho
@@gerutzu575 Which is why it's hard to get excited about "content" for tf2. It's the same case drop and some new cosmetics lmao. That's fine i guess but glorifying cosmetics is no different than releasing a battlepass for this game. In the end valve continues to milk the "hope" out of this community and most players are dumb to realize it.
I'd rather see bad weapons get community balanced before we potentially bloat the roster with even more bad weapons since Valve can't balance for shit. And even then, that depends on who's idea of a re-balance is.
Tbf: the saxton hale community impression guy did do a fucking great job with those impressions! They sound good for the most part, and in a couple cases sound like the classes normally with slightly clearer sound quality
I genuinely cannot think of a single reason why they wouldn't go to the actual voice actors for this. They have demonstrated time and time again that they love playing these characters. I'm very angry at Valve for this. The only voice actor I could see them reasonably changing is soldiers.
I must say that guy did a really good job with the voices, they sound really, really good, I barely can notice the difference, but I think it's disrespectful to the official Voice actors (Rest in peace Rick May).
while I have not been able to confirm any of this, I have heard two things: first, vavle broke a lot of the bots, at least in the north america region, by implementing checks to prevent multiple accounts from connecting from the same hardware/ip address, meaning it drastically reduced how many bots can be fielded. second is that community fixes are gonna be coming in a next couple weeks as a standalone patch.
Glad to see Cashworks and Sulfur getting in. Cashworks had been standing around compleated for about 14 and a half years. While Sulfur is gona give Steel a run for its money with confusing players, with its koth/ad hybreed setup.
as far as i heard(it was on reddit so take it with a grain of hale) that everything is just community made valve just added it in. which is why the voice actors were change for this. because it was made by a fan aka the creator of saxton hale
No yeah that was how it was done. Valve didn't hire a replacement for the voice actors or anything. Those lines were part of the community mod. My point was more that Valve has the power and the contacts to easily hire the actual voice actors to redo the lines and them not doing that made it come across as amateurish on their end.
Honestly just feels like, and starting to feel like this for a while now; Valve: "Heres the update! Look at all these maps! And even added in that Saxton Hale thing you guys love!" Community: "Aw man, look how many players we got now!" Everyone else: "Did ya fix anything?" Valve: " . . . bye!" Everyone & Community: "k..."
This "update" disappointed me to no end They add new taunts and hats every few weeks, the map fixes are really minimal and fit into "didn’t know there was a problem until we acknowledged that there was a problem" And overall, it disappointed me greatly.
1:44 for this you need to remember that the higher ups at valve don’t see much in TF2, And this update shot it to top 10 best sellers on steam, this was 100% a dip into the water for whats to come considering they put it on steam news and also considering the top 10 thing
I think it is a pretty nice thing we actually got the update, the war paints are the best they have ever been and the cosmetics are fine, the seal map is GOAT and the others too, i just dont like the Payload ones because they all are too big for their own good Also yes, i also am waiting for a day 2 update that hopefully adds all of the community fixes
The community fixes are probably in a seperate update later as the summer update was made by some part time valve employees and it'll come sometime soon according to an email
the maps are pretty great honestly, was a pain to figure out the seal map but OMG THE SEALS ARE ADORABLE, I NEED A PLUSHY OF ONE Do hope they release a follow up update for the saxton hale fixes, maaybe even reintegrate arena back into casual? seems anything is possible, do wish they atleast included a new weapon, like an all class melee symbolizing the fact we got a new TF2 update after... oh god 6 years?! either way maps are cool, no idea for the cosmetics, and saxton hale is borked ofc but cool, def hoping to check it out after it gets a fix
I highly doubt they made a whole category for community fixes and then decided they were just going to not use any. We know the update got delayed roughly 2 weeks, so it's likely they decided to just push the maps, cosmetics, etc now to avoid kickback, and the community fixes are coming in a smaller secondary wave in a few weeks once the kinks get ironed out. We also know the OG voice actors all went out to Valve to do some recording, so the VSH lines maaaay be temporary, a left over from the mod, or they might be doing an SFM or something.
Venice is my favorite map. It feels that it has enough flank space to fit entire 2fort map. I have done disgusting, unspeakable things on Venice as ninjaneer.
Notes about the VAs: Remember Invasion? They don't do official VAs for Community updates, Watergate still has text2speech To address the elephant in the room, Rick May is dead Nathan's trying to distance himself from TF2 Gary Schwartz literally cannot do Demoman's voice anymore The impressions are honestly pretty good and have been in the original mode since its inception Some of these people are in their 70s and VAs cost money, a lot of money, especially for professional VAs, and even if they contacted the VAs, they couldn't get everyone, and at that point the impressions would stick out even more For what it is, I think we got it pretty good
Valve just doesn't want to contribute any money to this game no matter how many players it gets. They were done with tf2 forever ago. And that's the sad thing because this game has the number of players any other "live service" or mp game would kill for.
valve really took some random guys off the streets that have good impressions of the mercs, paid them 60 dollars. cash, and told them to record some lines
I know this has not much to do with your vid, but I’ve been listening to Azure Lake a lot all day. And I had to do a double take and put my ear to my phone to hear you’re playing it on this vid! Haha. Anyway, other than the weird voice acting decisions, Saxton hale looks like a ton of fun!
The weirdest part of the voice impressions is how active the TF2 actors have been. Maybe besides Nathan and obviously Rick all the other actors could've done their parts and they have even jokingly asked for work.
I stopped "enjoying" my summer break since it's 30°C inside and every second week is spent with the fact that anytime it will rain😅. NEVERTHELESS I am here
Oops all maps doesnt mean as little as it used to, since “only maps” gave us vsh and the seal. Vscript allows valve to add in experimental gamemodes for a while as a map before dipping their toes into making it a full fledged gamemode
when the vsh maps are back, that’ll probably be the best time for some community fixes to be slipped in. So if we don’t get any then, then we probably won’t get any at all
Gonna mention this now, but they fixed the MvM upgrade station bug that was being abused by bots, and which prevented you from using the upgrade station at all
