Laying down a nice stack on aluminum is difficult. There are tons of factors involved. This video is a bit less specific, but will hopefully guide you through the process of figuring it out. Figuring out how you work is what it's all about.
By the way, I totally have to give a shout out to This Old Tony. His style kind of inspired this vid and I think it might help you. It only took 6x as long to shoot and edit (and I'm not even close to being as cool).

You said it right! Dont be afraid to learn it, it might be expensive and frustrating learning to weld at first, but it was worth it. Enjoyed the style change-up. Very cool. As a design engineer i would offer a couple of thoughts: The smoother and more consistent the weld bead the better. You don't want excessive variation in cross section along the weld, so the very pronounced big dab with a gap then another big dab, is not great functionally, particularly in fatigue. Also big welds standing up off the surface create a stress concentration at the toe of the weld. Like driving a car fast, smooth is good. I know people like the whole "stack of dimes " thing but it isn't great functionally to try to make it more pronounced. In moderation it shows tig welding rather than stick i guess and people like to have that hallmark visible. Just in moderation guys... particularly for anything seeing fluctuations in load.
@marcellemay7721
@marcellemay7721 5 лет назад
I never quite understood the whole stack of dime appeal. I prefer a smooth looking weld. I also tend to agree with you on internal stresses accumulating between the highs and lows on a variable stack of dimes. Wether or not that is testable and proves itself in the real world would need to be tested. I think that fatigue tests would need to be performed to show the results one way or the other. Common sense tells me that the low spots in a stack of dimes are the beginnings of where a stress crack would form.

I’ve been tig welding aluminum for years, my biggest problem is consistency. Using a very old Miller 250, for the past five years almost all of my welds are buffed off. Consistency never mattered, just production, and clean welds.
@gordjohnson70

TIG does a nice job and looks easy. However, there are a lot of settings and things to know. It's kinda like a combination lock... Ya gotta get ALL things right (gas settings, machine settings, rod sizes, rod types, etc.etc.) if you want good results. As a total newbie.... I thank you for clearing up all the little details. I'm SLOWLY starting to get it together.

@PacificArcTigWelding
@PacificArcTigWelding 4 года назад
warping is usually just part of welding 1/8' plate, although you can correct it by using a rubber hammer and correcting it as you go. Your starts are really important, Watch that you give it enough fill right away and this will help it to stay a little cooler. I also recommend using several plates at once. Do a pass on one, then switch to another plate that is cool, and so on. This helps a lot to keep things from cooking up on ya too much! Cheers Dusty
