TIG Simple is a new Series in which Justin the Fabricator takes all of the beginner TIG welding woes experienced by new welders and shows you how to work around them. This new series is created based on working experience with beginner or novice TIG welders here at the shop during one of our TIG welding classes.
In this episode, Justin shows you 4 different ways to feed filler rod with the help of Rush Kane AKA KaneKid on Instagram.

I think I've found a valuable source of knowledge with your videos. I'm starting out in the world of fabrication and I love TIG, so thanks for making and putting these videos on RU-vid, your helping me big time. I was shown one way to feed the filler, and man did I struggle with it, not no more after this video! I've just chosen a method from the four you've shown that works for me, and that the one I'll practice and use from now on. - Thanks again man.

'Kane grip' inherently moves the rod laterally as it feeds, look at the position of his hand, he seems to use that motion as a dab as he goes, if your hand/wrist rotation is off you will flick the rod off to the side and have a wonky run or just straight contaminate your 'trode. Did a dry run of this for shots and giggles and it requires not only a steady hand (not good if you shake like a strung out meth addict) but guitar player-like dexterity/coordination and takes a while to get the muscle memory/rhythm. Not for everyone, probably only a select few but interesting nonetheless. I clip my rods in half and use a mix of steady and index, so I can feed when I have to but still have the beginner dab control, but I don't do many long runs. Great vid as usual anyhoo.

My advise for the hobby welder that wants to get this down but doesnt weld as a career is to cut a 1' section of filler and carry that MFer every where you go and practice. Thats how i did it now when i tig weld on Bradley's and M1 Abrams tanks here on ft.hood its just muscle memory now. Good video though bro.

@FrankVexatious

Bend the rod at the end and it won’t wiggle as much, you can even do multiple bends to steady it more, only Catch is if it’s a long enough weld you’ll have to get over that bent area which can be a bitch at times

Just started to learn to weld. I am terrible at it....really. So much harder than it looks like most else in life. Anyway, tried tig welding yesterday and had a number of really bright flashes like the end of your Kane Grip weld. What is that? Is that the tungsten touching the rod or touching the filler rod? Actually made it like I was not even wearing a welding helmet...really bright. Love these videos. Really helpful. Cant wait to be able to take hands on classes when this Covid thing ends.

@johnbergeson8180
@johnbergeson8180 6 лет назад
The steady grip is the grip that nearly all professional welders that have been welding for 40 years use. The grip you call tradional grip is not a traditional grip and is not commonly used by traditional welders. The grip that is commonly used by seasoned professional welders is the steady grip. As the rod gets shorter, your hand gets closer to the weld no matter what grip you use.

A weird question maybe - but when your right handed, which hand you hold the torch and which feed?
@will5948
@will5948 4 года назад
Torch in the right - feed with the left. You'll already have the wrist control from writing to manipulate the torch, wire feeding you'll have to learn the muscle memory for whichever way you go. It can't hurt to learn both ways though - you might come across a few rare cases where you need to weld "left handed".

I don’t think I use any of these. I use more of a ‘ scoochie ‘ method and hold it a lot closer. I don’t know how they can hold it that far back and look like anything. ( unless you’re welding 3/4 inch aluminum at 300 amps or something)

Awesome video as always. I have a question regarding the roll cage welding/pipe welding you have done. Are the welds full penetration? Every video I watch says the key to roll cage/tube welding is the have the smallest gap possible at joints. Yet when I do that I can't seem to get anywhere near full penetration with my tig welder. I have a decent looking bead, but the inside doesn't show fusion. I know if I had a gap I could get full fusion, but everyone says not to do that. The other thing I always wondered was what is best practice with weld bead size with tig? I took a tig class at the local school, but they never covered what size I should make my actual beads. Aluminum is easy for me in that regard, the bead winds up being fairly wide. My steel welds tend to be half the width of the aluminum beads or smaller. Much smaller than most mig/stick welds I see around on a daily basis. I often wonder if I should multi pass and add another bead. Thanks in advance, and I will gladly share a beer or a pack of filler rod as a thank you :).
@MrChiMasterSir
@MrChiMasterSir 5 лет назад
Hi, The size of the bead should be equal to the thickness of the material. Smaller means you don't have as much strength as the material and thicker doesn't actually do anything but waste time and money. This is a general rule however, if an engineer says otherwise on a plan, follow the plan. Also, engineers don't always know what they are doing, if you spot something fishy, talk to the engineer.
