For those just starting to watch TFS. Great content and massive amounts of information to start learning with. Just damn does he talk fast which means you have to rewind a ton. And rewatch the same video many MANY times. Quick tip. Open the RU-vid options for the video and run it at a 75% playback speed. You can actually follow what he is saying and doing. And quit surprisingly at 75% he speaks like a normal person at a normal speed. Funny as but saved me having to rewatch the same video over and over again.

Thanks for the tips, my teacher only gave us a demo on two grips. I've been struggling not to contaminant my spike every bead or two, I'm gonna try some of these grips out.

I use a thumb wheel at work. The torch lays on my index and middle fingers and I rotate the wheel with my thumb. I'm usually welding someone else's fit-up so it's easier to adjust the heat for me. I usually have a Tig finger on my pinky and ring finger to stay worry free of the heat

I use the "combat knife in the teeth" grip. It gets a little hot occasionally, but it also allows me to taste the weld for efficacy.

Outstanding, I was struggling with the theory on "Walking the Cup".. meaning, I couldn't do it, or 3 minutes into trying to maintain a steady go, I would feel like I just left the gym after a 20 sets of 20 rep's of 200 lbs of curls, just exhausted with my noodle arms. I just fired things up to test this position to walk the cup... WOW!!! Thank you, I had given up on that method, and just thought it was something I couldn't do, until now!!! I need some table time with this now, but it is actually easy, now that it feels comfortable... Again, Thank you, Dru...

Cup walking is primarily a steel pipe welding technique, there are other materials and jobs where this method is 100% not acceptable, those being aluminum, anodized aluminum, polished stainless and sometimes exotics that are not going to be ground/polished, the ceramic cup leaves pecker tracks where the cup pivots, doing so on those materials I mentioned will many times result in termination.

First of all, love the videos. Also, I use kind of a combination of the Cigar and Pencil grips, which I have started calling a Pool grip. Since it's very similar to a Closed Finger Bridge that you would use on a Pool Cue, since I spread my Pinky and Ring fingers out to stabilize.

Best tip I've found is to always keep a light grip on the torch and always keep the tungsten well prepped. After that and getting comfortable with feeding the filler rod, it comes much more easily. A tig finger also really helps.

Thanks for making them! Do you plan to go in depth with tig welding aluminum and other materials? Mine always seem to come out grainy with 4043 but I do better with 5356

As for the tungsten if ur ever welding and all of the sudden stuff aint working right. Like if ur doing scratch start and it wont light or u cant get the arc all the way down in the root and getting a cresent shape. Ur past due for a sharpening lol. And itll feel like a whole new machine 😂😂

Great vid. Could you do a short video on "cable management" I find that the weight of the cable can make it really difficult to manipulate the torch. Over the shoulder? On your lap?

propper/pencil/cigar hybrid grip for me, sometimes choker if I can't prop- gun/handlebar grip at work (rolling style thumb trigger(not a fan))

I used the choker almost everyday to do 90% of my welding. I do a lot of thin sheet metal. I need the extreme stability and control the choker provides. Because it's sheet metal I can run a 12-inch bead without it getting hot.👍

Michael Hodges I used one on a Fronius machine once. I was actually extremely comfortable using it. It felt very natural in my hand.

I have a problem, my tig torch that came with my miller max star 161 has a loose grip that slides off frequently and turns whenever I hold it due to the hose twisting and idk what to do about it. I have to choke up like a pencil on the neck where the body turns into the torch head. My hand cramps from holding it so tightly

I usually always end up at "dip the tip" grip though. But the advantage is that I am not limited to choose out of the various mixtures of tungstens, I polloute my own as I weld. 😂 Seriously, a big torch with a ridiculously heavy cable might not the best for starting out, but that's what I have...

That looks like standard gas lens and nozzle for 9 or 20 style torches. Without gas lens these torches are even smaller but gas coverage is not that good.

Does most welders hold the touch with the dominant hand or the wire?

Whichever feels comfortable. I suggest starting with your torch in the dominant hand, but some people feel more comfortable the other way.

yeah I'm a choker but pinky out and index under not over I'm doing 316 stainless 20-18 gauge for seafood lobster tanks and I hate cleaning up welds.....so more control the better the weld less I have to clean

Bringing your own machine doesn't change the price because we're still using our consumables, gas, power, metal, and staff. The only reason to bring your machine is if we do not have the same one here (which we probably do). If you'd like to send an email or call to discuss, we're always available.

@@TheFabricatorSeries I just got my Miller 220 yesterday and wow tig is way more difficult than I could have imagined. But like you say in your videos practice practice practice. Already getting some decent results but only in ideal conditions and then once stuff gets too hot it goes sideways real quick.

Zackary Zerr Buy a transformer non inverter type. It will force you to learn how to tig weld. Those fancy settings and programs make it easier but also take the skill out of it

I always did the propper grip because it was easier with my slight tremor. but I did t realize it was a actual grip, we didn't actually learn different grips which is a shame. Party because of covid.

Chad Jones Listen to the words I spoke instead of your assumptions. I referenced the topic of the class. You will walk out knowing everything we are presenting in the class in reference to the topic. There are thousands of topics. I'm not a pipe welder. I never have been. I don't plan to be. I also don't offer classes or expert references for pipe welding. I don't plan to either. The closest thing I do for pipe work is using pipe to build turbo manifolds and the procedure is not like pipe work. I recommend you attend one of our classes to learn what you don't already know. I just request that you listen to what the other instructors and I say when you attend. Thanks for watching!

My camera settings were off for some unknown reason. I have been fighting with lighting in my stdio and all kinds of stuff for the longest time only to realize my camera was shooting all wrong to begin with haha. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for super detailed explanation. I am just starting and only able to hold my torch with a choker grip. It’s a wp-26 with a trigger and molded body so it’s probably closer to a shovel handle in thickness. Should I just go ahead and get a thinner torch and save this one for heavier materials? I am not working on anything thicker than 1/8 steel.

the hardest thing I found learning tig is amperage. too hot hard to keep foot at the right setting aet.

There is no cookie cutter setting for amperage since it works in conjunction with travel speed. I'll be getting into this in great detail in the TIG Simple Series.

I know another one. Antizombie greep. Torch must be hot enough, then you're grabbing its hose like a 1.5-2 meters from the torch and starting to rotate it above your head like a crazy. And there's another one -- most powerful. All the same but you must rotate above your head a whole machine.

I don't use any of those grips. None of those grips are comfortable. None of those grips work good with walking the cup. I walk the cup as much as possible. When I use a tig finger, I hold on to the torch with my thumb and index finger, and use either my middle finger or my ring finger as the tig finger. You mention for those of us that don't use a foot pedal; I have never used a foot pedal and would never be able to. I always scratch start.

John Bergeson Nobody suggested these are the only grips to use haha. These are just the most common.
