Great video. I bought an old truck that has sat for a few years. The transmission oil was below the pan. When I took off the pan I noticed that two bolts were on the magnet. They belong to the low-reverse servo cover. Now I'm wondering if someone was in there stealing parts. Your video gives some guidance on what to look for.

@@SouthpawAutoworks for sure! Your videos are great. I got a a 4l60 in my truck currently and and a 400thm as a spare for my 4x4 lol! I have about half the parts for the 4l60 rebuild but it hasn't died yet. I got the original nv4500 5spd also but that's another story all together lol!!!

Hi guys, what a superb demonstration you do, very helpful indeed. My T400 has a firm shift from 1 to 2 at any throttle speed. I have had this car for 6mths and my previous car had a smooth 1 to 2 shift as a hydra-matic does. Any advice would be appreciated.

Just wanted to say thanks for the videos, you guys rock! Very well done, well produced, and really helpful! Have either of you ever encountered the 1964 ST-400 (TH-400) that came in the Buick Riviera, one year only case and valve body. Non variable pitch- smaller front pump with .625 thick gear 8-bolt pump, smaller 1.8" tailshaft bushing, allen head center support bolt, PRNDL shift quadrant (no manual 2nd). 4 check-balls. Fun times....

Interesting. One of the TH400 cases used in this build series was outfitted with both a center support bolt, and a separate Allen head bolt that seats against one of the center support lugs. Really appreciate the positive feedback. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. -Robert

Fanfreakintastic!! Hell I’ve heard of some rebuild places that don’t even touch the valve body!!! Just the piston seals and wala you have been rebuilt! One year warranty and guaranteed to be getting done again in no more than 1 1/2 years!! Ask me how I know. Hence why I started doing everything myself.

The rebuild kit comes with 2 different sets of valve body gaskets, with/without orange lines.

Outstanding videos. So easy to follow. I wonder if I could ask, what could I do to stop it from banging into reverse? I can't be sure it's not in the transfer case or the rear end so I wanted to ask if it is common for an aging 400 to do that? Any suggestions? Working on an 85 K20 Suburban. 62xxx former fire apparatus. Unbelievable shape.

Hey, first off I would like to thank you for the outstanding content you provide on RU-vid, it’s seriously second to none. I have what feels like an obscure question in regards to the valve body and potential changes made as model years progressed. My 2-3 accumulator did not have a spring installed under the aluminum piston, I understand that some people remove these as a modification to get a firmer shift between 2nd and 3rd, and that is what I initially believed had happened to my transmission, however I was searching for a replacement spring and found in the Fatsco catalog that this spring had a year range of 1967-1982, my transmission is a 1990, do you happen to know if the spring was removed from these valve bodies at the factory for late model years?

On the vavle body when you were changing the ring on the accumulator, can you eliminate that spring in the valve body

2 questions. First, all ‘65 to ‘87 cases only have 5 check balls. Do you add a 6th or just go back with 5 even though the kit states to install 6? Second, when assembling the valves back into the valve body, do you use trans lube, trans fluid, or something else?

If I was doing a stock rebuild looking more for durability over performance what would be the upgrades to the internals you would most recommend?

Even in its stock form, the TH400 is a stout transmission. Everything mentioned in the video series is enough to make a great stock-application rebuild. I recall Andy mentioned the Boost Valve, in the video that covered the pump. It's not uncommon for those to be wore out. Long story short, when they wear out, they result in the clutches slipping (trans failure). Unfortunately, I did not have room/space to add it to the video description (there's a character limit). Got your comment on boost valve thanks. Is it really worth spending the time and money on trying to source a drum, to convert from roller sprag to 34 element sprag. trans is going in a square body with bout 400hp 350 no drag racing just farting around the street on the weekend.

I noticed in the video you guys said you showed how to do the seals on the low reverse servo and you didn't. Also spring and washer set up on the low reverse servo would be useful.
