Most useful lesson ever. I wish I had been taught this when I started learning Thai. It would have saved me a lot of confusion.

Learning Thai has made me aware of nuances in my native English that I'd never explicitly thought of -- like our words used to relay tone. In my high school and college language classes we didn't learn anything like this and this better prepares me for spoken language.

Thank you very much. Now I understand! In the past, I was so confused why some Thai words use different tones and do not follow the tone rule. For example เขา ( kao ). Now I understand. More of this sort of video, please. ขอบคุณมากๆครับ😊🙏

I would think it would be cool if you could make a video without phonetics and only with the Thai letters. I really want to learn to read thai and I find it hard not to cheat and look at the phonetic transcription.

I learned a lot from this you would think that to read Thai it would be made easer for native speakers because having the 2 sets of rules for speaking formal and informal. That’s understandable it’s the sane with English Exp Like when talking to a teacher we will say Mr/Mrs/Miss And for Drs or professors we use the title in the 3rd party contacts like how Thai does with P’/N’ don’t use it when talking to the person But we don’t have the formal written system

Question: Why is เนี่ย a low tone? With this spelling it should be falling tone right?
@IgetThais
@IgetThais Год назад
That's correct. You can divide it into two parts: writing and reading, and speaking. When it comes to writing, you can write เนี่ย, and when you read it, you can say เนี่ย with a falling tone without adding any emotions. However, when you speak, you have the freedom to express emotions and feelings. By making it a low tone, you create a concise and abrupt sound, which conveys surprise and seriousness. 😀

Really great. But how come when I sign up, ‘IGET30%OFF’ results in an “invalid coupon” error message?

hi Jack, thank you so much for explaining! I find when you speak ไม่ fast, it sounds more like 'mae' more than 'mai', could you advise?

Oh, I didn't realize that. I've listened to it again, and I think it might be a result of sound distortion. When we speak quickly, the sounds in words can sometimes get distorted, as you can hear in the video. My intention was to say 'ไม่รู้ (mâi róo), but when speaking fast, it may sound like แมะรู้ (máe-róo) unintentionally. Sometimes, the sound might be weakened or even changed to another, like มะรู้ (má-róo). It's normal when we speak fast. I had two of my sisters listen to it without providing details. When I asked them what I said in the video, they replied, 'คุณไม่รู้หรือ (khun mâi róo rǔe),' and they didn't realize that I said แมะรู้ (máe-róo). I believe they understood the context and that the sound แมะ (máe) represents the word ไม่ (mâi).

Kru Jack, you are an awesome teacher. I’ve learned hundreds of words and phrases from you. I have a question for you? Do you know Jesus? Have you ever spoken with him? Have you read the Bible? I would love for you to seek out his word today. God loves you. He sent his son to die on a cross so that you may have eternal life. You’ve got to read the Bible. It will change your life FOREVER. ❤❤❤
