I'll be in Chiang Mai this Friday and will be looking for exactly what you are doing, so keen to watch how and where you are getting your visa.

Hey Peter, Fellow Aussie here (with almost the same back story as yourself), currently living in Jomtien. I can totally relate to everything you discussed in your recent interview, life in Australia has simply become unaffordable. I did a "test run" here for 5 months after which I went back to Oz to finalise everything there. I agree 100% that everything just works out here in Thailand. I still cannot believe I made the move! Like you said, I decided to do it, worked towards it then just did it. I am so glad I made the move and am very grateful to the Kingdom of Thailand for making it do-able. I look forward to watching your upcoming videos.

Hi, Thinking of doing the same later this year. Also thinking at Jomtien. But am only thinking of maybe 6-7 months in Thailand and then elsewhere for the other months. Would a retirement visa still be the way to go?. Thanks.
@DiscoveringThailand
@DiscoveringThailand 3 месяца назад
@sdnalyam yes, just get a multiple entry visa, and you can come and go as you like. I'm not sure what happens with the 90-day reporting if you are out of the country, though. 🤔

Peter, One reason you may not be getting views anymore is because when one types in Discovering Thailand your program does not come up! I got your link from your interview today. I have noticed other issues with youtube. It's not unusual for the sound not to work, etc.

The links work now and the channel is being more discoverable as I only today renamed the channel and RU-vid can be a bit slow to react. Cheers

Aloha and mahalo for the information. My wife and I will be retiring to Thailand in a few years and preparing everything beforehand and it's always helpful to keep up-to-date. Also, I heard that you'll be able to do the 90-day check-in's on the retirement visa online soon.
@DiscoveringThailand

Yes, online check-in is available now, but your 1st one must be in person.

Aloha@@DiscoveringThailand ! We plan on hiring an agent to take care of all of that including setting up our bank accounts. Technically I'm already retired (collecting SSI) but I also own my own business. I'll actually be heading out to Thailand a few months before my wife to set everything up and secure a rental location.

Aloha@@DiscoveringThailand! I have not but my wife has been on several business trips. She used to travel extensively for her job. She's also originally from Seoul, South Korea. We've been living in Hawaii for 30+ years now, so it's almost like the best of both worlds living in the US and Asia. We just decided we want to live the rest of our lives out comfortably and the US is not the place to be.

Excellent information! I really love the step by step processes. Quick question, I've read that if you have a certain amount of retirement/pension income that they will waive the need for the $800,000 deposit. Do you have any info on that?

I'm not sure about pension income, I'm too young for that, but that is an option. Maybe someone in the comments knows that answer. 🤔

90 day reporting with a 01 yr retirement visa seems to defeat the purpose of the retirement visa. Seems a little odd.

Hello, thanks for the videos on retirement visas. I’ll be applying for a tourist visa and plan to travel there on July 1st and then apply for a retirement visa. You mentioned that you need to have the 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account for 2 months before you can apply for a retirement visa. Does this mean you would have to open an account then leave the country (after the tourist visa expires) return to Thailand on a visa exemption then apply for the retirement visa?
@DiscoveringThailand
@DiscoveringThailand 2 месяца назад
Check the latest visa news... there is a 60 day visa exemption coming that can be extended another 30 days. Plenty of time to get your bank account sorted.

If you have 800.000bht in Thai Bank you can do a Retirement Visa all by yourself, you don't need an agent. Cost of agent.....around 30,000bht....do yourself....1,900bht. Single Re- entry Permit....1,000bht....Multiple....3,800bht.

Could I ask if you were to do this again would you first secure your longer term accommodation arrangements before applying for the retirement visa ? The other question I have is once you have your retirement visa and accommodation can you then obtain a different type of bank account ? I have a Bangkok Bank account that I have had for several years now but can only use for atm transactions, I do use Wise to tap and pay but just curious. And good luck with your future plans, great work offering advice to others. Cheers

Hi, thanks for your question. I had everything required for the visa so I was confident I would get it but yes I was a little concerned about securing a 12 month rental agreement before hand. I would do it the same again. I also had a one way ticket to Thailand and sold everything in Australia, so I was not planning on going back. lol I would think that having all the paperwork inc Visa, rental agreement, Thai Drivers License then opening a different bank account would be no problem. Hope that answers your question :)

Lets not forget that it’s basically illegal when the visa agency helps you with the 800.000. Yes, it can work but nowadays the Thai government is getting more strict and if the agent gets caught doing this, it might get a lot of people deported who used those illegal ways.

If I transfer to Wise, park the funds there for some time before transfer to Thailand, do I pay service fee twice? How long can I park the funds at Wise? Do I earn interest if park it there for a longer while? Thank you.
@DiscoveringThailand

You can leave the funds in wise as long as you like, there is no extra fee. I do that while waiting for a good exchange rate to transfer. Some countries you can get an atm card to access your wise money also 👌not sure about interest... check link in the description for more details.

@@DiscoveringThailand Yes, single is 1000 at immigration and airports + 200 if you don't have the photo and paper form filled. ...and 3500 for multiple. I always do it at airport. It is close to immigration desk. They are open 24/7 there.

@@DiscoveringThailand And the purpose for the re-entry permit is to protect so you visa does not expire when you leave, it does if you don't have it. Nothing else happens, and you can always start over.
