It turns out that I got the Jessica and Gaby characters mixed up, they were interchangeable characters to me it seems, I didn’t know who Addison Rae was until this week and I couldn’t describe to you what she looks like.
F that, FIRST he needs to do a SERIOUS Dracula film. He was so damn good in RENFIELD, I wanna see him in some really low-budget, campy gorefest remake of Dracula & His Vampire Brides or something. It should be X rated IMO too.
Unfortunately, all of those other trailers were directed by competent directors. That one (Werewolf Women of the SS) was Rob Zombie. And he can't direct his way out of a wet piece of bread.
This is the most fun i've had with a horror movie in quite some time. Eli Roth did not skimp out on the kills in this movie and there was so much dark humor in it.
@@ashiihideeshchiinii6158 that one was also played for laughs, though the guy with the cut open neck trying to get the waffle iron was funny in this. XD
That was the intention, Roth said the 80's version (Grindhouse trailer) was so horrible (graphically) that it was banned and all prints were destroyed except a trailer survived and was uploaded online and this movie is the modern reboot.
There are countless direct to video slasher that are graphic violence with grainy visuals. This one has bigger budget and high resolution visuals. Story is weak, but kills are creative.😮😮😮
I guess that 80s quote by legendary heavy metal bassist Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Dio, MSG, Foreigner) still applies. "It's perfectly OK to show a woman's bare breast on screen - as long as somebody is tearing it to pieces."
right on time, happy Thanksgiving, Doc. I really liked this film alot, this was the fun i wanted from the last Scream and for an Eli Roth film to be competent, let alone very entertaining, is a miracle.
I think Roth has a lot of potential but he goes in some strange directions that don't usually land well. Good on him for taking risks but I don't think they pan out as expected.
@@abegarfield7031I agree, even though I am a little more lenient on him. Still glad to see this film getting the love it deserves cause it was a fucking riot. XD
@@abegarfield7031Cabin Fever and Hostel 1 and 2 are some of the most memorable films of the 2000's to me, for better or worse. In that era we had remake after remake and bland flicks. These movies are still extremely original and innovative. He fell off the wagon with Knock Knock and The Green Inferno though!
In 2008, the security guard at the Valley Stream, NY/Green Acres Walmart was trampled to death on Black Friday. Eli was definitely inspired by that here.
Tarantino just bought and renovated a 100 year old single screen movie theater in LA. Got to see this there with a packed theater. Most fun I've had at the movies in a while. I really loved the Misfits "Where Eagles Dare " over the end credits.
Just returned from the theater and I quite liked it. Short end of it, kills were gruesome, entertaining, but shocking, characters/story was fine and serviceable. I was entertained, surprised, and came away quite happy and satisfied. Can't say I missed the sex bits, although we do get a bit of tease during the cheerleader spike scene. The grindhouse presentation also wasn't missed if I'm being honest. I'm not against it, but it's not something I'm savoring for either. One last thing, I'm ashamed to admit it, but the movie did hoodwink me a bit. Maybe I just caught up in the immersion of it all, but the movie ended up landing on no. 3 of suspects for me.
Hearing about the segment about trying to capture the grindhouse look reminded me of Megalobox. That anime was a celebration of Ashita No Joe's 50th anniversary. Megalobox attempted to look like an older anime by messing with its visuals via filters. Despite being available in hd and bluray, Megalobox doesn't have the full resolution it should have. You can observe the backgrounds and notice how things have a fuzzy look to it. I found this redundant to do more so when it's inital 70's inspiration, Ashita No Joe, got either remastered or upscaled in its bluray release.
Eli Roth, often times is hit or miss for me, but I will check this movie out although I did like it when The Simpsons went all gory for their Thanksgiving episode🦃🦃🦃
He is hit or miss for sure but Cabin Fever and Hostel to this day are so original and fresh. Most horrors we have seen before. The concept of both movies is still not seen again today.
Just wanna point out that the security guard dying is actually based on truth. Those savage bastards truly did trample a poor security guard soon as the doors opened.
There were 7 people in the theater, a friend and I found it ridiculous, people behind us in the back thought it sucked. The gore in the film is solid, and since it was done practically, it looked fucking excellent. Also, a note about Hobo With a Shotgun, the fake trailer wasn’t seen during its run in the US, it was made and shown in foreign releases only.
Different times. That was pre-social media and pre-influencer culture. Those you listed only have acting as their claim to fame. Curtis comes from a famous family.
I prefer the "turkey" kill from the original. It's completely over-the-top but in a fun way. The new one is arguably more realistic and gruesome but also kind of bland, IMO.
I was one of the few disappointed they didn’t stick with the retro, worn-out, dirty film print look from the original Grindhouse trailer. You are right about the need to update the aesthetic along with the story for broader commercial appeal. However, I feel it lost its “charm” by doing so.
I saw this movie a couple of days ago & I rewatched it today & Thanksgiving (2023) is easily my favorite movie by Eli Roth, which is saying a lot, especially given my track record with Eli Roth's filmography.
Perfect timing, I just got out of this movie with with a packed audience, it was a great way to spend the holiday. It’s a fun movie, cool kills, nice suspense, and likable characters… Some of them could’ve been developed more and the third act that was on a bit too long, but I have been waiting for this movie to come out since 2010, and it did not disappoint, and that is quite impressive feet
Agreed, this and Saw X are in the running of the best horror films this year for me. (From a major Hollywood studio, not any Indie or foreign ones I mean)
Hopefully not a spoiler but the killer was very obvious immediately as there is literally only one actor who's body build fits the killer's, every red herring was either too short or too big to be the person behind the mask. Unless they pulled a Urban Legend and had their body type change suddenly with the face reveal.
Not sure if you counted it as the third act but the ending dinner scene was my favourite part of the film I really liked the gore in that scene Overall while predictable this was a great slasher and hopefully this will become a franchise and John Carver become a big name like Freddy Jason and Ghostface Also I hope the fake trailer "Don't" is next to be adapted into a real film.
I love the homages in this movie. Dempsey breathing like Billy from Black Christmas at the begining, a killer klown knocking a turkey mascots head clean off, baking and basting a human carcass like when Billy eats his christmas cookies. The Scream vibes crashing through walls like micheal myers, throwing a hay rake as a spear like Jason. The Dinner scene towards the end also gave TCM vibes. And i mean John Carver great F'n name. All and all had a great time watching. With an 80s font at the begining i knew i was in for a good watch
I remember watching the grind house clip when I was younger and the trampoline scene always stuck in my head. Went and saw the movie tonight and it wasn’t until I watched this review that I realized the two were connected! This honestly makes me so happy
*Spoilers* Don't remember the girl getting stabbed in her c***h in this version. Even more disappointing, it looked like the only CGI death scene in the movie. If they weren't going to do it right, why even bother?
I get people being upset this wasn't a grind house movie. I can also see the backlash of it WAS and wasn't just like the original "preview." I had a fun time with it.
Surprisingly well made slasher film with the feel of classics like black Christmas, Halloween, my bloody Valentine, Friday the 13th part 6 and Scream No SJW/woke lecturing garbage, just escapist entertainment and no wonder it’s a hit. It’s also different in the mainstream horror genre than another pointless remake of a classic horror film like poltergeist, another found footage movie and not another sequel prequel requel to a genre franchise that should stay dead like Texas chainsaw massacre
Ahh yes my boi Doc's review on Thanksgiving as he promised, I'm glad to hear your opinion I recently saw it myself I had a good time watching. I wouldn't mind for a second watch.
I'm glad that Doc picked up the My Bloody Valentine vibes like I did. But I'm not as critical of the killer's identity or their motivation though. The whole movie - including the 2007 fake trailer - is meant to be a loving homage to the slasher genre, so it's supposed to revel in its tropes and conventions, as predictable as they became over the years. It doesn't reinvent the wheel by any means, but that clearly isn't the intent here, and that's okay. In the end, it's a good time and a worthy slasher that I look forward to watching each November.
I was thinking the same with the MBV comparisons as well, but I also agree with you on the reveal of the killer and the motivation. It's kind of dumb, but in the sense of a old school slasher, it fits fine. Though part of the motivation I wasn't expecting, so kudos. XD At the end of the day, I agree with you about the film and glad for it to finally come out.
I love a good slasher! But I gotta say these days theres not many good ones. I did enjoy "Sick" a recent slasher flick. I like all Eli Roth films besides Knock Knock. Glad you enjoyed it Dr! Love your voice!
I saw this and "Journey to Bethlehem" in a span of a few days and it's weird to see Milo Manheim as a drug dealer with a heart of gold in this one and then Joseph of Nazareth in the other...
I still like to see a Hammer Horror of “Don’t” over the top ghost vampire movie. I’ve always wonder how Patrick would’ve been as Ghostface in Scream 3. And yes people have already spoiled this movie like today’s leftovers.
Yea but it would be difficult to do that film because it meant to be a parody of trailers that explain plot points that sound too ridiculous and dumb and not exactly what is actually going on in the film. If they do it one day it has to be horror comedy there’s no way to make it a normal horror film without heavy rewrites in my opinion Not saying i “dont” want it to happen. It should just going to be complicated
@@evandaymon8303 If anyone can do it I will have to be an Edgar wright of horror. But you do have a point I wouldn’t want it over the top with to many fart jokes as a substitute of smart comedy and good scares. Here’s to wishful thinking.
@@icaliver if they kept the same level as that fake trailer but add more to it then it would be good or maybe cut stuff so it flows better yea wishful thinking here
Was honestly impressed with this movie. Yeah it's not gonna win anny major awards or anything but it was still enjoyable. Kind of reminded me of the 2012 remake of Silent Night Deadly Night which had a similar murder mystery, though the characters in this movie are WAY more likeable than anyone in that movie.
Some sufficiently grody moments in the film but it really did suffer from just being a cheap modern setting. But then again it probably doesn't get made if they insisted on making a 16mm period piece set in 1976. That cost budget.
I'd say half turkey, half feast and half stuffing. A movie that needed to go full grindhouse but went polished I Know What You Did Last Summer meets every slasher from 1981. Didn't hate it, didn't love it.
I enjoyed this film quite a bit, but I watched the trampoline scene pretty thoroughly and I'm pretty sure the knife didn't pierce the girls WAAHOO like it did in the fake Grindhouse trailer. Still very entertaining though. I actually seen it on black Friday at my local mall theater.
