I agree overall with your assessment of the movie. I'm from the Massachusetts/New England area so much of the characterizations were spot on so I was enjoying it on another level. It was a bit refreshing they veered away from the trend of making this a META Horror. Sure that has it's place but it doesn't have to be in EVERY horror movie 😁 Definitely it was a throw back Slasher in the vein of My Bloody Valentine or Curtains... Considering it was filmed in Canada that makes total sense!

Do you think anybody will MAKE a 'classic, standard slasher' anymore? Every time I get my hopes up, I'm disappointed. I keep hoping for a resurgence of this genre...even a BRIEF one...but so far, I've seen nothing but ineffective VARIATIONS on the traditional motif...I don't want some bizarre hybrid....I just want a NEW version of the SAME thing....

As a massive fan of Tarantino and Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" double feature, the faux trailers were nice add-ons to the aesthetics of B-movie schlock value. And Eli Roth is also one of my favorite horror directors of the 21st century, as well as one of the best students of modern horror alongside James Wan, Mike Flanagan, Julia Ducournau and Jordan Peele. More power to you, Emma! And as we're almost reaching to the end of 2023, let's hope that there will be more awesome horror movies that will come out in 2024.👏🏻💯

I went and saw Grindhouse in the theater as it was meant to seen. People always complain about how superheroes and sequels have taken over cinema but when they have a chance to support something a little experimental they don’t take advantage of it.

We reviewed this last night from Disney Springs 😂. We saw Terrifier 2 there too. I’m honestly surprised they show such gory early screeners there but that’s ok by us. We loved it! Lots of fun!

While I'm glad the movies' worth checking out, it's kinda disappointing to hear it doesn't do anything really new with the slasher genre. There aren't too many Thanksgiving horror movies out there and it'd be nice for the holiday to get one that really stands out. Also, Patrick Dempsey,so, yay, Maine pride!

I have been looking forward to this for a while. Roth was interviewed here locally(LA) a few times around the time of the Grindhouse trailer. It seemed to be always just around the corner, now it's 16 years later. The only thing I recall from the trailer was the line: "white meat, dark meat, all will be served", or something like that. Is that in there? Your review is good enough that I will watch in theatre. How much can you expect from a Thanksgiving related horror? Kristy was just ok, and really just uses Thanksgiving break to remove people from school and allow the killers an advantage.

I got to see an early screening of this on Friday and thought it was tonnes of fun. I don't normally like Eli Roth's stuff, as I find it too nasty and mean-spirited for my taste, but had a great time with this one because it's a lot more light-hearted than I'm used to from him. I did have a "well yeah, obviously" moment at the killer reveal, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment.

Yeah, I don't know. I don't have much hope anymore when it comes to a new Eli Roth movie. However, your stamp of approval (more or less) will go a long way. I'll check it out, just with fairly low expectations.

I wasn't surprise that Eli Roth chose not to use the 70's 'grindhouse' effect this film. It looks like he was going for the typical 90's slasher film. I love the kills, excellent practical effect and a nice story.

I did read before seeing the film that the idea was to make a new, modern version as if someone discovered the fake trailer and decided to remake the story with some of the same elements. For me, it worked more as a dark satire and even more serious moments had that knowing feel about them. I'll agree the plot and certain jumpscares were pretty average, but even character misgivings I had largely ended up working out by the end. And I found the gore to be a lot of fun, even if it wasn't as insane as the grindhouse trailer. I give it a low 8/10 overall.

Where Robert Rodriguez made Machete (s) as B-Movie cheesy as the trailer, it looks like Roth is going for that 2000's glossy look of the Scream series, or better yet, the My Bloody Valentine remake . I hope there's a degree of fun, besides the kills.

I agree with all your points. There's a lot to admire and it was generally a lot of fun, but its tonal shifts from nonsense to no-nonsense made it hard to fully invest in the story or characters. I also felt the final girl was a little wooden.

_Thanksgiving_ (2023) seems a lot like _Dark Harvest_ (2023). 🤔 I guess it's one of those similar-movies-at-the-same-time coincidences. I have no idea wth happened with _Knock Knock,_ it had potential but went very wrong. 🤷

Chucky and FD have great kills, but I'd argue that the Nightmare On Elm Street series has the most creative deaths. Some of them are straight-up surrealism. Good review, I'm still gonna check out Thanksgiving. I love 'holiday' horrors of any kind.

I'm not a big slasher fan but I went to see this with my son because he begged me to and I couldn't say no 😂That being said, I enjoyed it. It was pretty funny and I thought the gore was pretty creative. I wouldn't say it's original or inventive but I wouldn't expect it to be. I would have preferred a movie based off the trailer from Grind House to actually be more in the "Grindhouse" style. though. My favorite part was actually the beginning during the store riot. Overall it's pretty basic but I wouldn't expect anything special from Eli Roth to begin with 🤷‍♀I had fun though!

I would actually consider “Thanksgiving” a slasher masterpiece. It’s layered. There’s a backstory there. There’s character development. The chase scenes are incredible. It’s exciting. Great unique kill scenes and gore. It’s the total package. Eli Roth has given us one of the greatest “slahser movies” of all time. Now I’m just hoping we can get a future “Scream” movie from him one day 🤞🏼.

Probably the 2000s feel is what made me like it - sometimes I crave this more basic kind of a movie. It was a time I was in high school and kind of started watching horror - around 2008-2010 and it felt kind of familiar and cozy. I am also more of a slasher girl, and I watched a lot from the mid 2000s to 2010s. Supernatural horror is something I rarely appreciate ad this year was a miss in this regard

I love holiday horror and I also grew up in Massachusetts so biased it loving the setting and all the towns they reference. I thought the movie was hilarious and very fun but the biggest thing for me was the satire and showing the sheer ridiculousness of Black Friday (which I know is an American thing) but I really appreciated that aspect of it.

I really liked it. I think it's fun and I'm happy with the level of gore and such. It seemed like a joke based on the Grindhouse trailer, but I think Roth and the movie's writer made a solid slasher that kept me engaged and wondering who the killer is. Definitely watching it again in the future.

Yeah, everything you said is what I was expecting from the movie after watching the trailer. The trailer made it feel more like a Scream/CW show type movie, which defeats the entire purpose of the Grindhouse trailers including the original Grindhouse trailer for this movie. The trailers from Grindhouse were all supposed to be silly, and Machete & Hobo With A Shotgun lived up to the silliness of their original trailers, so it’s a shame to hear this didn’t as well.

Eli Roth is very hit or miss for me as well...and sadly he's had a lot more misses than hits. His biggest "hit" in my opinion is the original fake trailer for Thanksgiving, which I think is absolute perfection and hands down the best thing he's ever done. So I am definitely looking forward to this feature-length version, but my expectations are definitely tempered. Thanks for all you do, Emma, love the channel!

GO WATCH THIS MOVIE! It's a great movie and prob the best original slasher / mystery film since 1996's Scream! But the movie has been released but against a huge number of big movie's this weekend and seems to have limited marketing.. It deserves a sequel so let's get bums in seats!

I'm a fan. I'm all for a return to the slasher to the cinema. In regards to the R rating, a lot of things far milder than this do get an R rating. I will definitely say I would've loved to have seen this go over the top enough for an NC-17 or unrated status, but that would've made it near impossible to get a sequel on the limited release it would've received. I do see a lot of people point out pacing issues. I'm probably in the minority here, but I didn't have issues with that. I really loved the silly looking practical effects harkening back to the trailer. I imagine some of this hits differently for those of us in the US who celebrate the holiday and those elsewhere. The opening Black Friday stuff felt like a kick in the stomach for me. I did enjoy the stereotypically obnoxious nature of people from Massachusetts on display. t's not Earth shattering, but I'm pretty pleased. I enjoyed it enough to go see it in the theater two nights in a row. I'm probably going to see it on Thanksgiving as well. I'm hoping some of the lose ends are there to be open for a sequel. I definitely want a sequel just so Ryan can be a villain, or at least get eviscerated. I despise that guy. I'd like to see more of Bobby.

Believe it or not the last Thanksgiving themed slasher flick I can remember was Home Sweet Home starring Jake Steinfeld. yes the same Body By Jake Steinfeld. he plays the slasher BTW. I'm dying to see this Eli Roth flick, but seeing the cast on IMBD, I'm already a little bummed out that they don't seem to be the actors featured in the Thanksgiving trailer we saw on Grindhouse. Where's Michael Biehn, Freddy Rodrigues and Eli Roth? We better get that cheerleader scene. I welcome plot holes. 80's slasher flicks were full of them. based on your review I believe I'll be quite satisfied. Just so long as the young teen would be victims are not a bunch of spoiled divas or super humans. I'm looking at you new Scream franchise.

I’ve been told anything head related like a head exploding or getting caved in is an instant R18. Midsommar and Hateful 8 both had those and they feel like MA ish movies 😅
