My Thanksgiving cacti are potted in Glacier Gold potting mix, and I added some small Orchiata bark to the 16 inch pot that Big Red is potted in for added aeration.
Lots of info in this video! I go over light requirements, watering, and why your cactus might not be in bud or bloom yet. Also, what to do if your cactus gets into trouble from overwatering.
I look forward to hearing your success stories about your cacti!
Many blessings,
Amy :)

I wish I would have found this video of yours first! I've come across a couple more of your videos over the past couple weeks (older videos) and I've been bouncing all over the place on how often to water and fertilize my Thanksgiving cactus. We nearly lost our cactus a few years back after repotting with some normal potting mix (before I knew any better). It developed root rot and I saved a couple dozen cuttings and rooted them in just water. I took the best 10 that I had and placed in two different pots. It has not bloomed since but otherwise looks very healthy. Living in Western Illinois, I have placed our CC in a four seasons room. It's getting much colder at night so I've now placed it on a heating mat set to 52 degrees. Tomorrow I will provide the supplemental lighting you suggested with this video. I thought that that week of 70 degree weather had delayed the budding. But it sounds as though you had similar weather. But to be honest, I cannot remember the last year that we've had a flowering. I remember sharing a photo of it on facebook years ago and have determined that to be 2016. Though the plant is a fraction of what it used to be. I've had it since we were married (wedding gift from my wife's aunt) and that will be 19 years tomorrow.

I'm luck to have some old plant but have not been able to bloom them they are pink. A couple of years ago I order a yellow and it just grows and blooms Beautifully for me it's amazing. Now if I could just get the others the pink ones to do the same I would be doing good. Last year I picked up a riot and it is just it's just a light blooming 8 blooming but I have high hopes for next year. So I have a yellow and a red that have faithfully Bloom for me the pinks I have yet to get the handle on but they are my my bigger plants I have 3 and in hanging baskets one of them a large wire Basket but I will get it and I keep watching you.

I had many branches fall from my Thanksgiving and Christmas cactuses and couldn't bear to throw away that potential so I rooted then put into a seedling tray. I have only ever seen, white, red, pink coloured blooms available here. Occasionally I see an Easter Cactus in white, red or pink too, the flowers on these are stunning. @@OrchidWhisperer You should try an Easter cactus, it’s a different genus of plant and the flowers are pointy open like Aster daisies with beautiful centers. I used to grow a few years ago. I found them less fussy than Christmas cactus😅. When I am done with reducing my orchid numbers, I will get back into my house and garden plants. I have sooo neglected my garden since getting into orchid growing, which is a shame because because I love my outdoor time. Can’t be in two places at once or as my mum likes to tell me “ you want to drink all the water in an ocean at once”! 😅, orchids should come with a caution warning - “beware! May cause you to become an unhinged obsessive, take in moderation only”😂🤣😇🌸🌼💕
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer Год назад
@@suethompson6497 Lol! Can I quote that warning on an upcoming video? 🤣 It's SO TRUE! Seriously, I'm preparing a video about how to prevent orchid fatigue. You'd be surprised how many people tell me their collection is way to big and they cant take care of them all! I've had requests for this video. So if you have ideas, I'll add them, but your beware cracked me up! 🤣 Btw, my birth month flower is an aster, so I'll have to find a (1 only lol) Easter cactus! Blessings to you, my orchid sister! 😇💞🌺🍁🍂🙏
@suethompson6497
@suethompson6497 Год назад
@@OrchidWhisperer Certainly, you can use the warning because it’s been my experience that they tend to overtake your life. Before I got into orchid growing I had a life with many varied interests. But the orchid hobby took over all spare time, money and space. Money and space can be replaced but my time cant😅. This happened because I started out wanting to grow everything initially because I didn’t know what’s going to work in my environment or my expertise level; plus I watched videos on YT channels about beautiful tempting orchids😂. There is also long term costs to consider for materials like bark, moss, pots, etc, then include in extra heating, lighting, shelving etc. Initially, I only ever wanted to grow Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilums but I got sucked into all manner of genera out of my exuberant uncontrolled interest. I wanted to travel recently for a couple of months and couldn’t go because nobody could care for the orchids. These are just some of the things that I have experienced and it has resulted in fatigue and a feeling of being tied down to the proverbial orchid kitchen sink! I have tried to be as honest as possible about my experiences, hope it helps you with info for your video. 😀😇🌺🌸💖

Hi, Amy--I've brought my 3 Thanksgiving cacti inside about the end of Sept. (we live in zone 5 in IL) and placed them in a spare bedroom that is cooler and has the darkness that's needed. I'm so excited that one of mine has started to put buds on it for the first time since I got it, but I'm sad that it's back in the spare bedroom where I won't get to enjoy it! I'm afraid to move it to our kitchen or living room with my other houseplants now for fear the buds will fall off of it. The other 2 plants haven't started budding yet, so I'm wondering if I should move them out to the main part of the house soon and maybe just cover them every night.

It's totally normal for the buds to drop when you get a new cactus. They don't like to be moved once they're in bud. With good care, they'll rebloom for you next year. That's the hard thing about these plants...seeing the buds drop off after you bring them home.

Hi! Amy, I am also am Amy. I'm from SE Louisiana. I have 2 Thanksgiving cactuses. I have had them for 3 yrs. When I first got them they were in full bloom and bloomed well past Christmas. Last yr they refused to bloom but that was partly my fault, I was not giving them their 12 hours of darkness. This year I did and they began blooming beautifully. But, suddenly they have stopped. They are were they have been since I got them so that hasn't changed. I only water them when needed so I'm not over watering. I have a florescent light above them on the window where they are and they recieve indirect sunlight. Any ideas as to why they are no longer blooming.
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer Год назад
Hi Amy, Have you watched my yearly video on care for them so that you can see what to do with them throughout the year? That's one idea, and the other is the amount of light they're getting. If you can grow them in a sunny window that gets morning light, that's where they thrive. Florescent lighting probably isn't enough to get them to bloom. You might want to buy a full spectrum LED light for them if you don't have a sunnier window. Happy growing! Amy

It has done surprizingly well considering and is currently budding profusely. My question is- now that its adapted to its conditions, how should I handle changing its soil? I will wait until Spring but should I slowly add a different mix? or do it all at once?
@OrchidWhisperer
@OrchidWhisperer Год назад
Hi Eileen! Your cactus is happy if it's budding profusely, so I wouldn't change anything! The compost rich soil should last a long time, and I would keep it that same soil until it gets too large for its pot. I had to put some bark in Big Reds 16 pot or we wouldn't have been able to lift it! Lol! Enjoy your cactus and you did a great job! 😇🌺💞
